Abstract: A process and an apparatus for producing alkali metal hypohalite by passing an alkali metal brine solution through the anode compartment of an electrolytic cell in which the anode compartment and the cathode compartment are separated by a fluid impervious, anion-permeable membrane, providing an aqueous support catholyte into the cathode compartment, impressing an electric potential across the anode and cathode to evolve halogen at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode and recovering alkali metal hypohalite from the anode compartment.

Abstract: Oil insoluble metal salts of lower dialkyl dithiophosphates are rendered oil soluble when combined with alkenyl or alkyl mono- or bis-succinimides. Oil compositions containing this combination are useful as crankcase lubricants.
Abstract: Hydrocracked lubricating oils are effectively stabilized against deterioration caused by light by the inclusion of at least one of each of certain nitrogen-containing aromatic components and phenolic components. The combination of such components, e.g., dialkyl anilines and alkyl substituted phenols, provide outstanding inhibition to sunlight deterioration.
Abstract: A lubricating oil composition for use in the crankcase of an internal combustion engine, having improved resistance to the formation of emulsion-sludge in the area under the engine rocker cover, which contains the combination of an oxyalkylated alkylphenol-formaldehyde condensation product and an oxyalkylated trimethylolalkane.
Abstract: Acetoacetanilides and related beta-ketoacetanilides are effective antioxidants when used as additives in petroleum products and petroleum-related products. Antioxidant properties are displayed at levels as low as about 0.05 weight percent.
Abstract: A lubricating oil composition for use in the crankcase of an internal combustion engine, having improved resistance to the formation of emulsion-sludge in the area under the engine rocker cover, which contains the combination of an oxyalkylated alkylphenol-formaldehyde condensation product and tetra polyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene derivative of ethylene diamine.
Abstract: Thiocarbamyl derivatives, including thioureas and thiocarbamic esters derived from the reaction of an alkenyl isothiocyanate with an amine and alcohol or thio, respectively, have utility as an additive for hydrocarbons, particularly fuels and mineral lubricating oils whereby enhanced anticorrosion, oxidation inhibition and/or dispersancy activity is imparted to said hydrocarbons.
Abstract: A hydrocarbyl-substituted carbamidopropanamide represented by the formula: ##STR1## in which R is a hydrocarbyl radical having an average molecular weight ranging from about 150 to 2000 and R' is hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl radical having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms or an R"(X-R'").sub.y -- radical in which R" is an alkyl radical having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, X is oxygen or an --NH-- radical having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms and y is an integer from 1 to 3, a method for preparing said hydro-carbyl-substituted carbamidopropanamide, and a lubricating oil containing same is provided.
Abstract: Mercaptothiadiazole is reacted with hydroxyl-containing unsaturated esters, or their borated derivatives, to yield a product that is useful as a friction reducing additive in lubricants.
Abstract: Metal working operations, especially drawing, are facilitated by applying to the metal a composition which provides lubricity thereto, which melts at about 30.degree.-150.degree. C., and which comprises principally a polymer of a monoepoxide or monoepisulfide containing from about 8 to about 25 carbon atoms. The composition may be applied in liquid form and solidifies on cooling to ambient and normal storage temperatures. Prior to application, the composition is preferably heated to a temperature higher than its melting temperature for ease of flow and uniform dispersion thereof onto the metal.
Abstract: A lubricating oil additive is produced by contacting an aqueous slurry of ammonium paratungstate with an organic phase comprising a major proportion by weight tertiary alkyl amines having the formula C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 NH.sub.2, where n is from 18 to 22, to extract the tungsten into the organic phase from the aqueous phase while solid ammonium paratungstate is being solubilized into the aqueous phase. The aqueous phase is heated to drive off water so as to form the resulting lubricating oil additive.
Abstract: The invention herein is concerned with novel compositions of matter made by (1) reacting phosphorus pentasulfide with a polyhydroxyester and (2) reacting this product with a nitrogen-containing compound, and lubricant compositions containing same.
Abstract: Boric acid salts and borate esters of hydroxyethyl alkyl imidazolines are effective friction reducing additives when incorporated into lubricating compositions.
Abstract: Products from aminoguanidines or their salts, monocarboxylic acids and sulfur and their use as anti-rust and anti-corrosion additives are covered herein.
Abstract: Engine fuel economy is improved by adding a friction-reducing amount of a boronated N-hydroxymethyl aliphatic hydrocarbyl succinimide to the engine crankcase oil.
Abstract: Fluid compositions containing a lubricant or liquid hydrocarbon fuel and a minor amount of a complex salt containing a 5- or 6-member ring are provided. These derivatives are made by complexing (1) the reaction product of an alcohol or an aminoalcohol with a succinic compound containing a long-chain hydrocarbon with (2) a metal salt. One such complex is one made by reacting a metal salt with the product of reaction between an alkylsuccinic acid or anhydride and said alcohol or aminoalcohol.

Abstract: Thio-bis-(hydrocarbon-bisoxazolines) which are the reaction products of thio-bis-(hydrocarbon substituted dicarboxylic acid material), for example, thio-bis-(polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride), with 2,2-disubstituted-2-amino-1-alkanols, such as tris-(hydroxymethyl) amino-methane (THAM), and their derivatives are useful additives in oleaginous compositions, such as sludge dispersants for lubricating oil, or anti-corrosion agents for fuels.
Abstract: Polymeric additives comprising a diene-modified mono-olefinic backbone polymer functionalized with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate and post-reacted with a nitrogen compound. The additives impart combined detergent, viscosity index improvement and other useful properties to lubricating oils and hydrocarbon motor fuels.
Abstract: This specification relates to novel oxymolybdenum dialkyldithiophosphates having the generic formula [(RO).sub.2 PS.sub.2 ].sub.2 Mo.sub.2 O.sub.4, wherein R is a hydrocarbyl group having 1 to 30 carbon atoms. It also relates to the use of these compounds in lubricants as extreme pressure, antiwear, and oxidation-inhibiting additives.
Abstract: Improved water soluble lubricant compositions are provided by incorporating therein amides derived from alkylamines and succinic, tetrahydrophthalic or tetrahydrofuran tetracarboxylic acids.
