  • Patent number: 4702430
Abstract: A braking device for the spool of a fishing rod is disclosed which contains two separate braking adjustments. The first braking adjustment adjusts the coarse breaking force. The second braking adjustment adjusts a finer braking force. The embodiment discribed uses two springs to bias braking boards to friction boards, the two springs being adjustable separately. The first spring is adjustable by varying the linear displacement of an adjusting cylinder which is threaded into a portion of the fishing spool apparatus. A second adjusting mechanism uses a cam with a varying radius pending on the location of the cam. This varying radius is biased against a leaf spring, thus varying the displacement of the one end of the lead spring depending on the location of the variable cam.

  • Patent number: 4695009
Abstract: The structure is intended for incorporation into a conventional type fishing reel having a spool for retaining a supply of line, a crank handle and a drive train operable through the crank handle to direct line onto the spool. The drive train has at least one rotatable member which coacts with a clicker that is mounted on the reel movably between a first position wherein a portion of the clicker contacts the one rotating element of the drive train to produce an audible noise and a second position wherein the portion of the clicker is spaced from the drive train elements. An actuator associated with one of the rotating elements of the drive train, upon being rotated in a first direction, shifts the clicker to its first position in contact with one of the elements of the drive train. Upon the rotating element associated with the actuator being rotated oppositely to the first direction, the actuator causes the clicker to shift to its second position so that no sound will be produced as the reel is operated.

  • Patent number: 4688738
Abstract: A combination fishing reel wherein fish line is retrieved and wound upon a spool rotating about its normal axis and is cast from the spool in a spinning manner over the nonrotating spool open end. Line twisting is eliminated by simultaneously rotating the spool about an axis transverse to its normal axis of rotation during line retrieval, and by utilizing different rates of spool rotation about its two axes of movement during line retrieval automatic level crisscross winding of the line on the spool is achieved, successive windings being circumferentially spaced to minimize line binding and wedging and eliminate line entanglement during casting. Automatic indexing means orient the spool to its supporting housing for casting, and a bail may be used to augment line handling during retrieval.

  • Patent number: 4685823
Abstract: An antibacklash splined shaft (14) is formed by first machining splines (22) in the end of the shaft, thereafter forming an axial bore (26) in the shaft, and thereafter forming slots (28) in the shaft that extend from between the spline into the bore. When the slots are formed, the teeth flex slightly outwardly to relieve the internal stresses in the shaft. Thus, when the splined shaft (14) is inserted into an internally splined member, the teeth are biased outwardly so as to firmly and intimately engage the internal splines, providing a coupling that exhibits no backlash.
