  • Patent number: 5208956
Abstract: A controlled deflection roll for use in calenders and like machines has a non-rotatable carrier for a hollow cylindrical shell the end portions of which are rotatable on bearings and the central portion of which surrounds hydraulically operated shell deforming elements. A first hydraulic circuit is provided to supply heated oil to the deforming elements, and a second hydraulic circuit serves to feed lubricant to the bearings. The two circuits are separated from each other by thermal barriers which are installed between the shell and the carrier intermediate the deforming elements and the bearings. Valves and/or flow restrictors are provided in the second circuit to vary the rate of feed of lubricant to and/or the flow of lubricant from the bearings. This renders it possible to establish a desired temperature profile along the full length of the peripheral surface of the shell.

  • Patent number: 5208963
Abstract: A die member for joining a fastener to a panel includes a generally rectangular opening defined by two spaced apart opposed end walls, which receive the end walls of a pilot portion of a fastener. The end walls of the opening terminate into arcuate corners and are adapted to sheer and deform the pilot end walls of the fastener thereby forming bearing panel support abutments capable of providing a liquid tight seal between the panel and the fastener. The die member also includes clinching lips on opposed sides of the die opening. The clinching lips preferably include a top portion and tapered wall which deform the panel edges into grooved openings in the fastener thereby providing a liquid tight seal. The die opening is surrounded by a generally planar surface having an outer generally rectangular perimeter having generally arcuate corners. The generally arcuate corners form arcuate depressions within the panel when the die member operates on the fastener to attach it to the panel.

Abstract: A roll, specifically a paper machine press roll, with a hollow rotatable roll body features a roll shell and on at least one of its two ends a hollow roll journal. A guide body which is stationary or fastened to the roll body extends through the interior of the roll body and forms with the roll shell a channel system through which a tempering medium flows. For purposes of using air as tempering medium, a pressure blower and/or a suction blower are connected to the channel system. The channel system and the blower(s) are so dimensioned that an air flow velocity above 10 m/sec will materialize in the channel system.

  • Patent number: 5206979
Abstract: A specialty paint finish roller composed of a substantially conventional roller handle assembly having an axle, a roller tube, a pair of bushings for rotatably interfacing with the at least one axle of the roller handle assembly, and a disposable, generally cylindrically shaped rag component twisted around the roller tube, tucked into the axial cavity of the roller tube at either end thereof and secured thereto by a press fit of the bushings with respect to the axial cavity of the roller tube. The rag component is more or less twisted with respect to the roller tube. A specialty finish is provided by the specialty paint finish roller using either the positive application method or the negative application method. Rag components are easily replaceable during the job in order to achieve a maximally artistic result, as could formerly only be achievable using hands-on rag rolling techniques.

  • Patent number: 5199168
Abstract: A method of forming a tachometer roller for a tape drive assembly for detecting the speed of a tape moving along a reference axis when the tape is in contact with the roller. The roller includes a cylinder extending in a longitudinal axis and adapted to be fixed in a tape drive assembly for rotation along the reference axis. The periphery of the cylinder defines an air vent groove running obliquely to the longitudinal axis for venting of air captured between the periphery and the tape. The vent groove terminates in respective circumferential grooves formed in respective edge portions of the roller. The vent groove is formed from a single plunge cut of a tool starting at a first circumferential groove and terminating at the other circumferential groove.

  • Patent number: 5193258
Abstract: A self-loading type of controlled deflection roll includes, in a preferred embodiment, a pivot assembly which is pivotally mounted to a support shaft near either end of the roll. The roll includes a roll shell having an extension attached to either end which extends co-axially outwardly from the roll shell. These axial extensions of the roll shell are supported by non-self-aligned bearings on the pivot assemblies near either end of the roll. Intermediate the end of the roll shell and the bearings is a heat barrier which prevents hot hydraulic fluid within the interior of the roll from contacting or heating the bearings which rotatably support the roll shell about the self-loading assembly. The bearings can, therefore, be provided with a lubricant which is sealed and shielded from the temperature of the hydraulic fluid within the roll.

  • Patent number: 5189775
Abstract: A deflection controlled roll has a rotatable shell supported on a non-rotating central beam by a plurality of individual shoes which are positioned transversely of the beam between the beam and the shell. A curved semicylindrical surface of the shoe bears against an inside surface of the shell and is hydrodynamically lubricated by an oil film, in the nature of a plain bearing. The shoes are biased by inflatable air lift bellows which are positioned within recesses within the shoe, between the shoe and the beam. The shoes are mounted on the beam on pins which provide at least three degrees of freedom of movement. An improved drive for the roll shell has a cog belt sheave mounted on the shell in concentric relation to one of the shell support bearings. A cog-type drive belt is threaded on the sheave, and a drive pulley for the drive belt is positioned normal to the direction of shell deflection such that the deflections do not change the spacing between the pulley and the sheave.

  • Patent number: 5181304
Abstract: An alignment system and method wherein a machine module is aligned with and secured to a machine base. A plate is loosely held on the module by screws, and the base and plate have mating pin holes. A pin is inserted through the mating pin holes, and the plate moves to find its aligned position. The screws are then tightened to fix the plate on the module, and the pin is removed. Subsequent realignment can be easily accomplished by reinsertion of the alignment pin to insure registration between the preset plate and base pin holes.
