  • Patent number: 5179780
Abstract: A receiver-dehydrator assembly for use in an automobile air conditioning system is provided which incorporates a seamless, aluminum canister with universal-style inlet-to-outlet connector construction. The universal orientation feature consists of an octagonal perimeter at the top of the canister, which accommodates location of the outlet connector in relation to the inlet connector in any 45 degree radial increment. Mechanical joining processes are employed during the manufacturing of this assembly, so as to maximize the cleanliness and dimensional integrity of the assembly. The versatile, one piece canister design provides a clean, seamless, leak free integral assembly.

  • Patent number: 5175916
Abstract: A locator strip (10) accurately positions upholstering fabric (12) upon a seat cushion (16) in the manufacture of seats. The locator strip (10) includes an array of U-shaped pockets (30) along one edge which are separated by finger-like projections (32). A thin filament (40) is fixedly attached to the distal ends (34) of the projections (32) and is formed with notches (39) or cuts (39') between the projections (32). The locator strip (10) is sewn between the edges (18,20) of two fabrics (12,14) with thread (36) stitches passing through the pockets (30) and around the projections (32). The locator strip (10) functions to guide the edges (18,20) of the two fabric covers (12,14) into an elongated slot (22) in the cushion (16).

  • Patent number: 5174002
Abstract: A driven, deflection-controlled cylinder includes a stationary crosshead that is surrounded by a hollow cylinder. The hollow cylinder has a projection that includes a bushing-like part which encloses the narrow end of the crosshead with a slight radial distance therebetween. A bearing is arranged on the bushing-like part, which is supported in the axially outer part of a bearing bell that is arranged on the outer end of the crosshead. A gear wheel is arranged between the bearing bell and the end of the hollow cylinder, and it engages with a drive pinion in a drive housing. The drive housing is mounted on the side of the projection adjacent to the hollow cylinder, as well as on the outside of the axially outer part of the bearing bell that is opposite the drive pinion.

  • Patent number: 5155892
Abstract: Hydraulic cylinders each comprising a hollow cylinder casing, a ram, and an annular seal are assembled automatically by a mechanism that stores and feeds seals, ram and casing members into separated axial alignment and then axially moves the components together until they are assembled. A tapered mandrel protects the inner surface of the seal from abrasion as it is fitted over the end of the ram, and a tubular insert with collapsing finges guides the ram and protects the seal from abrasion by the end of the casing as the ram is fitted into the casing. An automatic cap threading machine threads a cap in the open end of the casing after the push rod has been assembled in the casing. Retractable support means are provided for certain of the components in order to permit an assembly mechanism to fit over the components and move them along an axial path.

  • Patent number: 5155910
Abstract: A doctor bar consists of two different circular disks that are clamped or fixed in some other way on a cylindrical carrier bar. Circular disks having a smaller diameter and made from elastic material alternate with circular disks that have a larger diameter and are made of a very wear-resistant material, specifically ceramic. The difference in the outside diameter makes for one-half the groove of peripheral grooves of the doctor bar that are formed between the various circular disks.

  • Patent number: 5155895
Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatic orientation and assembly are provided. A first plurality of parts are mated with corresponding depressions or other irregularities formed in a pallet by vibrating the pallet and moving the parts thereover. A second plurality of parts are then oriented in a predetermined positional relationship with the first parts, for example matingly engaged therewith, by passing the parts over the pallet which is again vibrated, generally with different vibration parameters. The second parts may matingly engage corresponding irregularities in the first part, may be positioned and oriented by further irregularities on the pallet, or a template may be provided over the pallet with openings for positioning and orienting the second parts. The passing of parts over the pallel and vibration of the pallet may be repeated for additional parts to be assembled if desired.

  • Patent number: 5146664
Abstract: In a controlled deflection roll comprising a roll shell rotatable about a stationary support and braced or supported by support elements at the stationary support, a rotational moment is intentionally exerted at the opposite ends of the roll shell by force-exerting elements. These force-exerting elements extend in axial direction of the controlled deflection roll but are offset in spaced relation with respect to the lengthwise axis of the controlled deflection roll. These force-exerting elements operate in pairs in opposite directions with respect to one another. A lever arm is formed by the distance or spacing between the force-exerting elements and such lever arm exerts a greater rotational moment in the presence of modest space requirements and without deformation of the roll shell.

  • Patent number: 5142759
Abstract: A roll cover apparatus is disclosed for covering a roll of a papermaking machine. The apparatus includes a synthetic cover which is applied to the outer peripheral surface of the roll, which is of an electrically conductive material. A plurality of fibers are randomly dispersed within the synthetic cover such that the plurality of fibers are disposed between the outer peripheral surface of the roll and an outer face of the synthetic cover. An electrically conductive material is applied to the external boundary of at least some of the fibers such that during use of the apparatus, when slippage occurs between a web of paper being treated by the apparatus and the outer face of the cover, an electrostatic charge generated by the slippage is discharged by the conductive material from the outer face of the cover to the electrically conductive roll so that scorching of the web by discharge of the charge through the web is eliminated.

  • Patent number: 5140738
Abstract: An elongated insert has an enlarged central area with wrench faces formed thereon. On one side of the central area, an end of said insert is formed to provide a connector. On an opposite side of the central area, the insert is an elongated pipe having a series of annular barbs formed thereon. An inner split collar fits over and is dog locked to the pipe after it is slipped into the end of a hose. An outer locking collar fits over the split collar, compresses, and secures it in place. Various principles are shown for selecting a degree of locking forces which optimizes and matches the ease of installation vs. the grip that is required.

  • Patent number: 5140750
Abstract: An open ended, flat spiral belt is joined at its ends on a roll to form an endless cover. A spiral belt is fitted with a zipper assist in the seam area to facilitate the joining of the spiral belt on the roll. One part of the zipper assist is removably attached to one end of the spiral belt with the other part of the zipper assist being removably attached to the other end of the spiral belt. When the two sections of the zipper assist are zipped together, they pull the two ends of the spiral belt together, allowing for interdigitation of the spiral loops of the spiral belt, which then forms a channel for the introduction of a seam wire. Once the spiral belt is seamed on the roll, the zipper assist is removed and the roll is set in slow motion at about ten revolutions per minute. The entire fabric is subjected to application of heat from a hot air gun to set the spiral belt, now in the form of a spiral shrink sleeve.
