  • Patent number: 5242522
Abstract: A method for producing a photo album page composed of superposed panels of transparent polypropylene film joined together by parallel lines of adhesive to define channels, each of which is divided by a paper strip into front and rear compartments to accommodate photos. To make photo album pages of this type, two webs of polypropylene film are concurrently advanced into combining rolls. Applied to the inner surface of one of the polypropylene webs are parallel lines of hot-melt adhesive whose chemistry is such that it has an affinity for polypropylene. When the webs are adhered together in the combining rolls, the lines create a plurality of channels. Also concurrently fed into the combining rolls in the spaces between the lines are a like plurality of paper tapes, whereby emerging from the rolls is a composite web which is then slit into individual album pages.

  • Patent number: 5242516
Abstract: A profile strip has a closure element, made of a first material, which contains a base surface, and lateral webs or flanges extending from the base surface on each side of the closure element. An adhesive layer, made of a second material, different than the first material, is attached to the lateral webs, but not to the base surface, by co-extrusion of the adhesive layer with the lateral webs. The adhesive layer is subdivided into adhesive ribs, with each pair of the two adjacent ribs separated from each other by an adhesive-free area. Sub-dividing the adhesive layer into ribs separated by an adhesive-free area substantially eliminates the deformation of the lateral webs when they--and the adhesive ribs--are cooled after the coextrusion.

  • Patent number: 5242523
Abstract: The invention disclosed here is a method for forming and curing an intricate structure of criss-crossing composite stringers and frames that are bonded to a skin panel. A structure constructed in accordance with the invention would be well-suited for use as a portion of an aircraft fuselage, a boat hull, or the like. The method is preferably practiced by applying uncured composite stringers to an uncured composite sheet panel. This is followed by placing cured frames crosswise over the stringers. The frames have openings at the locations where they intersect with the stringers which enables the frames to come into direct contact with the skin along most of their length. During the forming and curing process, the stringers are covered with a plurality of cauls, and the entire assembly of skin panel, stringers, frames and cauls is subjected to a vacuum bagging and curing process. The cauls serve to maintain both part shape and to control the flow of resin within the stringers as they are cured.

  • Patent number: 5240538
Abstract: A padded strap for brassieres and similar garments that includes an integral molded pad portion. The strap, including the pad, is suitable for forming the load-bearing straps of the qarment while presenting an attractive, smooth and seam-free outer appearance and also being free of seams along the wearer's skin. The padded strap of the invention also may be used as a separate pad for a conventional strap by attaching appropriate hooks or other hardware to the ends of the strap. A method for forming a strap according to the invention is also disclosed. The method includes laminating selected fabrics to a resilient core to form a laminated sandwich, molding the sandwich under pressure and temperature to compress a portion and leave an uncompressed portion to form a pad portion, cooling the molded sandwich in a curved position to induce a curved set, cutting the molded sandwich to size to form a strap, and securing the strap to a garment.

  • Patent number: 5236532
Abstract: A liquid impermeable barrier fabric which resists penetration of liquids under finite hydraulic heads and maintains that capable after upwards of 75 institutional washing/sterilization cycles. The barrier fabric is structurally characterized by a silicone membrane attached to a fabric substrate. The substrate is a tightly woven fabric which is constructed of polyester yarns. Attachment of the membrane to the fabric substrate by a bonding mechanism in which the silicone material is in intimate contact with a substantial portion of the looped portions of the yarn, which define the surface of the fabric. This bonding mechanism also includes hydrophilicity of the yarn surfaces with which the silicone is in intimate contact. The fabric is treated with a hydrophilic finish to provide this aspect of the bonding mechanism. This barrier fabric is provided through the use of coating/calendaring apparatus.
