Abstract: An apparatus and method is disclosed for an improved laser radiation barrier for shielding a surface from laser radiation comprising an outer polymeric layer comprising a dispersion of mica, an intermediate mica layer for retarding the penetration of the laser radiation therethrough and an inner polymeric layer comprising a dispersion of mica bounded to the intermediate mica layer. The polymeric layers comprises a dispersion of titanium dioxide. An optical metallic barrier may be interposed between the outer polymeric layer and the intermediate mica layer for distributing thermal energy.
Abstract: A novel method and apparatus are provided for making an improved welded joint between overlapping lengths of thermoplastic strap. The welded joint includes a central region and an adjacent peripheral region. The pressure on the strap joint during formation is released first in the peripheral region and subsequently in the central region. An embodiment of the apparatus for making such a joint includes an anvil, a central strap-engaging member, a peripheral strap engaging member, and a mechanism for moving the anvil sequentially to three positions. At a first position the overlapping strap lengths are pressed between the anvil and both the central and peripheral strap-engaging members. In the second position of the anvil the peripheral strap-engaging member does not press against the strap lengths while the central strap-engaging member continues to press the strap lengths against the anvil.
Abstract: The present invention provides a new and improved method for manufacturing vehicle interior trim panels such as door panels and instrument panels in which different regions of the trim panel have different colors or other aesthetic characteristics. Two pieces of sheet vinyl having the desired color or other aesthetic characteristic desired in the manufactured trim panel are cut to shape and then bonded together edge-to-edge to form a composite two-tone vinyl sheet. This composite vinyl sheet is draped over a mold having a blade projecting from the mold surface. A retainer is installed onto the backside of the composite vinyl sheet to attach the composite vinyl sheet to the blade and thereby hold the vinyl in place with the bond between the two sheets located at the apex of the blade. The mold is closed and urethane is poured against the backside of the composite vinyl sheet to encapsulate the retainer.

Abstract: In composites comprising at least one solid base layer of a propylene polymer and a foam layer likewise of a propylene polymer, these layers can be bonded by softening only the side of the base layer facing the foam layer and optionally provided with relief structures by warming, and pressing the base layer and foam layer together, giving a very strong bond.
Abstract: A press roll apparatus temporarily or finally bonds two glass sheets with an adhesive intermediate film sandwiched therebetween to manufacture a laminated glass. The press roll apparatus has a plurality of drive roll units each having a pair of upper and lower presser rolls operatively coupled to a drive source and rotatable thereby for pressing the glass sheets therebetween, and a plurality of free roll units each having a pair of upper and lower presser rolls freely rotatable for pressing the glass sheets therebetween. The drive roll units and the free roll units are housed in a frame and vertically positionally adjustably supported by the frame, the frame having a pair of horizontal shafts projecting outwardly. The frame is supported on a support frame by the horizontal shafts for angular movement about the horizontal shafts, the support frame having a pair of horizontally spaced vertical support columns.
Abstract: An apparatus and method provides for thermally bonding a textile web while supporting the web continuously from the lay down point until the web is thermally bonded. The apparatus includes a heated transfer roll adjacent an endless moving belt. The transfer roll is located outside the belt loop on the opposite side of the belt from a guide roll. The belt passes around a first portion of the transfer roll with the web sandwiched between the belt and transfer roll. The heated transfer roll heats the web and the web is transferred to the transfer roll. The web is then directed through a nip formed by a calender roll positioned adjacent a second portion of the transfer roll for thermally bonding the web.
Abstract: A mold used in producing printed wiring board is disclosed. The mold comprises upper dies and lower dies for sandwiching a printed wiring board therebetween, thereby performing drilling, punching or the like, one of said upper dies and lower dies having a press surface which is provided with concave or convex portions for absorbing steps caused by forming a printed wiring circuit on the printed wiring board.
Abstract: A process for manufacturing surgical implants is provided with a surgical ating, which neither comes loose upon surgical handling nor causes user discomfort, lesion or infection. The process comprises the steps of disposing a silicone sheet over a foam sheet, and exerting pressure to adhere the same. The assembly thus formed is placed on a mounting base which will receive the implant with another silicone/foam sheet assembly being disposed over the same. The implant is then placed in a mold which will exert a uniform pressure on the implant to adhere the two silicone sheets and foam sheet assemblies to the implant.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method for applying a tape on a belt-like member which is being fed continuously are disclosed in which a new tape loaded as a spare is delivered when the tape is depleted so as to continue the operation of applying the tape, so that the tape can be continuously stuck on the belt-like member by using several tapes while eliminating the necessity of stopping the operation of applying the tape onto the belt-like member.
Abstract: A process for producing a liquid-container material that includes a thermoadhesive resin film, a substrate sheet having a thin-film layer of an inorganic compound, such as a silicon oxide, and a paper substrate. The thermoadhesive resin film is formed by melt-extruding a thermoadhesive resin from an extruder die, and then cooled to a temperature at which the thermoadhesive properties inherent in the thermoadhesive resin film can be retained and at which no crack is produced in the thinfilm layer of an inorganic compound when the thermoadhesive resin film is laminated to the substrate sheet. The cooled thermoadhesive resin film is laminated to the substrate sheet to form a laminate, which is then laminated to the paper substrate. The thermoadhesive resin film may preferably include a non-adsorptive resin layer and a thermoadhesive resin layer. In this instance, the non-adsorptive resin layer is so provided as to be on the outside of the liquid-container material.
Abstract: Disclosed are a process for producing a tubular nonwoven fabric and tubular nonwoven fabrics produced by the same. In the process, a web is formed on a first rotating cylinder by catching fibers carried to the surface of the first rotating cylinder by a fluid, the web is transferred to a second rotating cylinder, a tube of the transferred web is formed on and around the second rotating cylinder, and the tube is drawn in the axial direction of the second rotating cylinder to form a tubular nonwoven fabric. The tubular nonwoven fabric with a high unit weight can be produced without elongating or breaking the nonwoven fabric, and the diameter of the tubular nonwoven fabric can be freely changed.
Abstract: A method for impregnating a plastic product with a hard wear-resistant material surface layer comprises providing a support plate having a desired shape and further having an adhesive layer on at least a portion thereof; introducing a plurality of particles comprising a hard wear-resistant material onto the adhesive layer; curing the adhesive so as to anchor the particles onto the support plate; placing the support plate into a mold cavity; introducing a polymer material into the cavity; exposing the sheet and polymer material to conditions effective to provide a polymer product having a hard wear-resistant material surface layer therein; cooling the mold and removing the support sheet therefrom.
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a carpet, a process for manufacturing a carpet and a method for recycling a carpet. The carpet of the present disclosure includes a primary backing having tufts of synthetic carpet fibers protruding from a top surface and, optionally, a secondary backing, with an extruded sheet of an isotactic polyolefin polymer between and integrally fused to a bottom surface of the primary backing and an upper surface of the secondary backing. The process for manufacturing the recyclable carpet includes contacting the extruded sheet with the primary backing and, optionally, the secondary backing, at a temperature sufficiently high to integrally fuse the extruded sheet to the respective backing. The method for recycling synthetic carpet of the type described includes manufacturing the carpet, collecting portions of the carpet, and melting the collected portions to make a feedstock.

Abstract: A structural member having integral surface de-icing capability and method of manufacture are described. The structural member includes a non-metallic high tensile modulus fiber-reinforced matrix structural backing, thin force and displacement generation means, and a thin high tensile modulus outer skin bonded to said backing and said force and displacement generation means which is postioned between the backing and the skin. The force and displacement generation means may include one or more inflatable tubular members and/or electromagnetic apparatus. The structural member may be substituted for the aluminum alloy leading edge structural skin typically employed on modern aircraft.

Abstract: System and method for densifying expanded thermoplastic foam materials such as loose fill packing materials, larger blocks of such materials, and food and beverage service items to reduce the volume of such materials for recycling or disposal. The material is heated to soften the material and expel gas from cells within the material and thereby shrink the material to a reduced volume. In some embodiments, and the material is further densified by compacting the heat softened material to further reduce the volume.
Abstract: A process is disclosed for making a covering panel for a portable case, the process including a step of bonding a lining and a sheet of foamed EVA by an adhesive agent then cutting it into base panels according to the desired sizes, a step of bonding a face layer to each base panel by a layer of polyethylene through the process of heating and pressing and then punching each panel into the desired shape.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a drip irrigation device by continuously extruding a tube and simultaneously feeding a plurality of dripper units in succession within the tube as it is extruded. Each dripper unit is arrested as it arrives at a first location which is a short distance downstream of the extrusion head where the extruded tube is still tacky, and is then moved transversely to bring it into light contact with the tacky surface of the extruded tube to cause the dripper unit to lightly adhere to the tube and to begin to move axially with it. A short distance downstream of the first location where the dripper unit has attained the same axial velocity as the extruded tube, the dripper unit is pressed into firm bonding contact with the tacky inner surface of the extruded tube.
Abstract: For the manufacture of curved insulating glazing panes having close tolerances of form, surface and thickness, the curved single glass sheets (2; 22) are brought to their desired shape via rigid suction mold plates (1; 21) and are glued together in this condition. A device suitable for carrying out this method consists of a press having two rigid plates (3; 23), template strips (4, 5; 24, 25) and positioning stops (8, 10; 28, 30) corresponding to the theoretical shape of the glass sheets, and also retractable suckers (15; 26) disposed between the template strips (4, 5; 24, 25), being mounted on the rigid plates (3; 23).
Abstract: Disclosed is an insulated metal door edge guard having a stainless steel body, a PVC cover, and a sheet of colored PVF. The PVC cover is coextruded completely around the metal body in strip form. Then, before the heat of the coextrusion step is lost, the PVF sheet is laminated onto one surface of the PVC cover. The combination is then roll formed into a door edge guard having a base and two legs. The ends of the legs are folded inward to form two beads. The PVC cover has two regions of decreased thickness on the interior of the beads to facilitate the roll forming of the beads.
