  • Patent number: 6000735
Abstract: A magnetically actuated safety lock device provides automatic locking capability to doors such as sliding glass patio doors and prevents unsupervised opening of the door by young children, thereby barring their access to dangerous environments. When the sliding door is closed, it is automatically locked. The lock device is installed in a position high upon the sliding door to prevent actuation by young children and requires no permanent modification to the door on which it is installed. The lock device consists of a locking assembly and a magnetic key. The locking assembly includes a magnetized latch assembly and a mounting bracket. The latch is held in the locked position by gravity and is only rotated into the unlocked position through the application of hand pressure or the repulsive force of the magnetic key. The doors can be unlocked from both inside and outside the door. Upon removal of either the magnetic force or hand pressure, the latch rotates back into the locked position.

  • Patent number: 6000254
Abstract: The present invention provides new pushbutton door locks, particularly pushbutton paddle locks, for use in controlling access through doors. The pushbutton door lock has a combination chamber which has a plurality of pushbuttons for entering an unlocking combination. An operator actuatable button and an outside paddle are provided to actuate an unlocking mechanism after the correct unlocking code has been entered into the combination chamber. The outside paddle has a single motion which unlatches the door latch and opens the door. An inside paddle may also be provided to unlatch and open the door without restricting access through the door. A hold open feature may also be provided on the inside of the door lock.

  • Patent number: 5997053
Abstract: A latching apparatus controls the motion of a first member relative to a second member. The first member is reciprocally moveable relative to the second member in forward and reverse directions along the line of motion. The second member carries a latch which is movable within a plane parallel to the line of motion. The latch has a first pawl and a second pawl. The second member carries a pivot for carrying the latch so that the latch is rotatable relative to the second member about the pivot which is orthogonal to the line of motion. The latch is shiftable between first and second positions relative to the pivot. The first member bears a plurality of engagement features linearly arrayed along the line of motion. Each engagement feature has a generally forward facing first face and a generally rearward facing second face. When the latch is in the first position, it is biased for its first pawl to engage the engagement features.

  • Patent number: 5997052
Abstract: The invention is directed to a lock releasing mechanism for a container having a hinged or removable lid. A locking arm is disposed adjacent the container lid to prevent an opening of the lid, and a cable, or rigid bar, connects the locking arm to the locking mechanism. The elements of the locking mechanism comprise a slide plate to which the cable is fixed; a spring for urging the slide plate to a locked position, a guide member for guiding the slide plate, and a trigger ball which blocks movement of the slide arm in the locked position. When the container is tilted forward by a predetermined angle, the trigger ball becomes dislodged from the locking position to enable movement of the slide plate, and subsequent movement of the locking arm. When the locking arm is moved out of the path of travel for the container lid, the contents of the container may be removed. In one embodiment, a stop is provided to limit rotation of the locking bar to prevent contact with the container lid.

  • Patent number: 5997229
Abstract: A method of covering the head of a screw which has been inserted into a wood structure, such as a cabinet, a bookshelf, etc. There is a planar circular cover member made of a moderately flexible plasctic and having an adhesive surface. The diameter of the cover member is moderately greater than the diameter of the screw head and the opening in which the screw head is placed. The cover member is placed by positioning a first side portion of the cover member adjacent to the opening, and then deflecting cover member downwardly in a curved position above the screw head opening, keeping the cover properly positioned. Then the person's thumb which grasps an end of the cover member is moved to release the cover member which then snaps into position to cover the opening and become bonded to the surface of the wood structure.

  • Patent number: 5992195
Abstract: A free-wheeling lever handle controller for operating a mortise lock provides free-wheeling functionality while maintaining the full operational characteristics of various mortise lock functions. A lock mode receiving mechanism connectable to the lock output is used to detect the unlocked and locked conditions of the mortise lock, and correspondingly engage and disengage the free-wheeling mechanism. The free-wheeling mechanism has a split shaft connected between a handle on the controller and a handle input on the mortise lock. The two halves of the shaft may be coupled and uncoupled via a shaft lock movable perpendicular between locked and unlocked positions. In the unlocked position the shaft lock connects the two halves of the shaft to rotate together when the handle is turned. In the locked position the shaft lock disengages the two halves of the shaft to rotate separately and allow the handle to free-wheel with operating the door latch.
