    Abstract: A magnetic recording and playback apparatus using a magnetic head disposed on a rotating drum for forming oblique recording tracks in succession on a magnetic tape to record or playback serial data along the same, has a tracking control for controlling the height of the magnetic head in the direction perpendicular to the length of the recording track. A speed control is included for controlling the rotating speed of the rotating drum and/or the traveling speed of the magnetic tape in accordance with the bit transfer rate of the serial data so that the magnetic tape travels one reference track pitch while the rotating drum makes an integer number of rotations. A processor is included for compressing the serial data along the time base so that the serial data is recorded while the magnetic head scans the recording track.

    Abstract: An apparatus for driving a disk-type recording medium includes a base plate including a magnetic material, a spindle mechanism, formed on the base plate, for rotating the recording medium, and a controller for controlling the spindle mechanism. An insulating film is formed on the base plate, and an electric wiring pattern is formed on the insulating film. The spindle mechanism includes stator coils magnets, a rotor, a bearing, and a spindle shaft. The stator coils and the bearing are fixed on the base plate, the magnets are fixed on the rotor, the rotor is fixed on the spindle shaft, the spindle shaft is supported by the bearing, and the stator coils are connected to the writing pattern. Parts of the controller are mounted on the base plate and connected to the wiring pattern. With this arrangement, the entire apparatus can be made thin, mounting positional precision of the respective parts can be improved, workability is improved, and therefore a manufacturing cost can be reduced.

The control section sets a write mode in response to an input write access command, and outputs write data and density indication data to the recording section. In the write mode, the recording section generates dummy data in accordance with the density indication data and modulates a write current in accordance with the write data and the dummy data subsequent to the write data. The modulated write current is supplied to the medium access section. A value of the write current is determined in accordance with the density indication data, and the write current decays with a time constant while the write current is modulated in accordance with the dummy data. The medium access section write-accesses a medium in accordance with the modulated write current in the write mode.

    Abstract: A magnetic head feeding device suitable for mass production while providing a higher tolerance to vibration and shock is provided. A carriage is rotatably and slideably mounted on a guide shaft. A magnetic head is mounted on the carriage as is a rack. A pinion mounted on a motor, engages the rack to move the rack along the guide shaft in a reciprocating fashion when the pinion is rotated. A magnetic coupling between the carriage and a fixed support provides an attractive force which acts as an engagement force between the rack and the pinion without applying a contact force on the carriage. A stop is provided at each end of the rack and is integrally formed with the rack so that the stop prevents the pinion from rotating and the carriage from moving once the carriage has reached a desired outer limit of motion in either direction. A contour wall is integrally formed with the rack at a position opposed to the rack to prevent disengagement of the pinion from the rack.

    Abstract: A computerized video record rental system and method in which a video record unit such as a tape cassette is provided with an integral counting device for counting the number of times the record is played. Upon rental and return of the record, the counts are recorded in computer memory, together with an identification of the record unit, and the computer computes the rental fee due based on the net play count for the record unit. The preferred counting device in the video cassette uses caliper arms to detect the position of one of the tape rolls in the cassette at two points on opposite sides of the roll and drives a counter in proportion to changes in the distance between the points. This virtually immunizes the mechanism from false counts due to lateral shifting of the tape reels in the cassette housing during handling of the cassette of a cassette playing machine.

An apparatus for incorporating a lock plate in a video cassette comprises a plate holding device which holds the lock plate in an inclined orientation so that the surface of the plate body, on which surface the protrusions are formed, faces down obliquely and so that the shaft extends horizontally above the plate body. A fitting device grasps the lock plate held by the plate holding device, moves it linearly while keeping it in the inclined orientation, and thereby fits it into the cassette case body.
