  • Patent number: 4507988
Abstract: An opener for assisting in the opening of beverage cans of the type having a pull-up tab which levers a scored closure segment of the lid down into the can and beverage bottles of the type having a twist-off cap. The opener has an elongated body with a can tab actuator at one end and bottle cap torqueing structure at the other end. The tab actuator is bent or inclined relative to the main body of the opener so that the main body provides a down-turned handle for operating the tab actuator, while the tab actuator provides a down-turned handle for operating the cap torqueing structure. The tab actuating structure has opposed, open-sided lower and upper jaws, with a longitudinally arranged rib on the upper jaw defining both a narrow, tab-gripping notch between the jaws and a lead-in ramp for guiding a tab into the notch.

  • Patent number: 4506568
Abstract: A strap wrench especially designed for removing oil filters. Both ends of the strap are retained in the wrench body and this forms a loop of the strap which passes around the oil filter. By applying a twisting action to the wrench body, the oil filter can be loosened with a minimum of torque applied to the wrench. The strap wrench comprises a strap structure which has its two ends formed into a loop structure. The two ends of the strap pass through both parts of a two-part holder structure. The two-part holder structure has one part inside the second part. Rotation of the inside part of the holder will lock the ends of the strap to the holder and further rotation of the holder then causes the strap to rotate the oil filter held in the loop of the strap.

  • Patent number: 4502252
Abstract: In a lapping apparatus, washing water is ejected from washing water holes toward a carrier holding wafers after the wafers are polished. Thus, the wafers are separated from the carrier and upper and lower polishing members. Then, the carrier is forced up above the upper polishing member by a pushing ring. The wafers left on the upper member are carried onto a table by a first sweeper of an automatic collecting device. The transferred wafers are arranged in a line along a second sweeper. Then, the second sweeper pushes and moves the wafers in the direction of their arrangement toward a cassette on one side of the table. The wafers are housed in holder portions in the cassette, and are then immersed, along with the cassette, in a pure water tank.

  • Patent number: 4499798
Abstract: A pair of pliers is provided with a slot in each jaw to receive the tongue member of a special purpose plier cap member having a unique working face. The cap member may be quickly assembled, removed and replaced. The cap members have a tongue which engages a pair of rods secured across the jaw slots and also have a finger-like projection which engages an arcuate recess at the base of the slot. The cap members are retained by engagement of the finger-like projection in the arcuate recess and by engagement of grooves in the cap member tongue with the bars which are secured across the jaw slot.

  • Patent number: 4499797
Abstract: A wrench includes an upper jaw integral with a handle and a force multiplying cam member pivotally mounted on the handle. A lower jaw has a pivot point for pivoting relative to the cam member and the upper jaw. A sliding bar is mounted inside the handle to slide with respect thereto. A free end of a first toggle linkage member is pivotally connected to an ear of the lower jaw and a free end of a second toggle linkage member is pivotally connected to the sliding bar so that the pivot point can move relative to the handle. A tension spring extends between the ear and the lower jaw to urge it away from the upper jaw. An extension integral with the first toggle member forms a second handle coextensive with the first handle and cooperates therewith to move the jaws toward each other as the handles are squeezed together. Such movement continues until the jaws contact an associated object. Continued squeezing of the handles causes the second toggle member to move the sliding bar back from the upper jaw.

  • Patent number: 4488459
Abstract: A closed or open end ratchet wrench head comprising a substantially hollow cylindrical body with a plurality of recesses or pockets formed therein in communication with the central opening of the cylindrical body. A plurality of flexible, swinging pawls that act as jaw members are located in the recesses and extend into the central opening of the body for direct contact with a nut or bolt head. The pawls are preferably formed of high strength spring steel suitably tempered and heat treated for abrasion and impact resistance in combination with resilience for spring action. The recesses and pawls are shaped to retain the pawls within the recesses while permitting the pawls to flex as required during ratcheting movement. The flexible pawls eliminate the need for separate hardened steel pawls and springs. The cylindrical body is preferably formed from pressed and sintered powdered metal thereby eliminating or minimizing subsequent machining or grinding steps to form the recesses.

  • Patent number: 4488461
Abstract: A continuously adjustable wrench suitable for use with a range of nut or bolt head sizes and having a handle which is offset or angularly disposed with respect to the wrench head. The wrench provides contact with the nut or bolthead at three spaced, opposing points such that the rotational torque imparted thereto is optimized and the strength required for the wrench head for a given torque is reduced. In one embodiment, the wrench head is pivotally disposed with respect to the handle either about a single pivot or a double pivot to drive a camming contact surface on the handle into contact with a confronting surface of the nut or bolthead. In another embodiment, a contact surface is adjustable longitudinally along the handle to be positioned adjacent the nut or bolthead.

  • Patent number: 4488460
Abstract: An improved ergonomic handle for a hand tool or other implement has a substantially elliptical cross-section taken in a first plane which forms a dihedral angle of approximately thirty (30) degrees with respect to a second plane which is normal to the longitudinal axis of the shank of the tool. The length of the minor axis of the elliptical cross-section is approximately sixty percent (60%) of the length of the major axis. The longitudinal axis of the shank passes through the elliptical cross-section and through the line formed by the intersection of the first and second planes. The handle is formed substantially as a revolution of the elliptical cross-section about its major axis. As a result, the handle is well balanced and accommodates a variety of hand grips for various uses or orientations of the tool, and the handle is convenient and comfortable for substantially reducing operator fatigue over extended use of the tool. This is especially advantageous in connection with a hand ratchet tool.

  • Patent number: 4485696
Abstract: Wire stripping apparatus is described (FIG. 1) in which movement of a lever handle 18 towards a second handle 12 causes an actuator plate 50 to shift laterally so as to cam displace gripping jaw 14 towards the second gripping jaw 10. Cutting jaws 28 30 are provided between the gripping jaws to penetrate the sheath of the cable. When the cable is firmly gripped and the sheath penetrated, the vectorial force applied by the inclined link 54 displaces the actuator axially (arrow B) to move the cutting jaws relative to the gripping jaws and strip the severed portion of the sheath along the core of the cable. The actuator undergoes a complex lateral and axial movement dependent upon the parameters of the cable being treated and by virtue of the triangular slot 56 in the actuator thus enabling the extent of lateral movement before commencement of axial movement to vary according to the cable.

  • Patent number: 4475420
Abstract: A ratchet wrench apparatus includes a housing body having a lever portion extending outwardly from one side thereof to apply a torque force. A gear assembly received in the housing consists of a universal gear, planetary gears and a sun gear which are rotatably driven in unison in response to a torque force exerted through a ratchet gear adjustably disposed in the handle and housing. An output torque force is transmitted from the gear assembly through a rotor body which is normally held in interlocking relationship with the sun gear in the gear assembly. The apparatus further includes a separate selector bar element which may be manually inserted in the gear assembly to enable the rotor body to rotate independently of the sun gear when a torque force is being exerted through the lever and remaining gears.
