  • Patent number: 4879932
Abstract: A manually operable paper slitting device has upper and lower platens normally biased apart from one another. The upper platen has diagonally extending and spaced parallel slitting blades extending downwardly therefrom for cooperation with spaced complementary slots formed in the lower platen. A resilient and compressible paper hold down and stripper element extends downwardly from the upper platen in surrounding relationship to the spaced slitting blades. The spaced slitting blades have an inclined bottom cutting edge which first pierces and then permits slitting of the paper along the cooperating slots in the lower platen. The resilient and compressible paper hold down and stripper element holds the paper from moving during and after the slitting operation.

  • Patent number: 4879936
Abstract: A circular saw blade in which tooth assemblies are pivotally mounted along the periphery of the disc spaced apart at equal angular distances. Each tooth assembly has a U-shaped tooth wedging member pivotally mounted on the disc. The tooth is secured between the disc and the wedging member. Pivotal movement of the tooth wedging member in one direction wedges the tooth between the disc and the tooth wedging member. Pivotal movement of the tooth wedging member in an opposite direction releases the tooth from the wedging action between the disc and the wedging member. A cam locking member is rotatably mounted on the disc adjacent the wedging member. Rotation of the cam locking member in one direction locks the tooth wedging member in the tooth wedging mode. Rotation of the cam locking member in an opposite direction unlocks the tooth wedging member to enable the tooth to be released from the wedging action between the disc and the tooth wedging member.

  • Patent number: 4879935
Abstract: A cutter in which a reciprocating knife is driven by an eccentric mechanism. The knife has a drive portion that flexes laterally in a plane perpendicular to the drive axis of the eccentric mechanism. The eccentric drive axis is offset along the perpendicular plane away from the axis on which the knife reciprocates. The offset of the eccentric drive axis allows the flexible drive portion to be kept straighter during the downstroke than in previous cutters. The increased straightening provides greater columnar strength and reduces deflection and stress of the drive portion during the time the knife is in compression. During the upstroke the knife is bent to a greater degree than in the previous cutters, but during this time the knife is in tension, the tension forces opposing rather than aiding the bending. The offset therefore provides for a longer service life for a blade of equal size or allows a reduction in size and mass of the knife to maintain an equivalent service life.

  • Patent number: 4872384
Abstract: A tube cutting apparatus of the type in which jaws carried by relative reciprocal slides move into and out of clamping engagement with tubing, the clamped tubing is thereof notched at its upper periphery with a scarfing blade, and the notched tubing is thereafter severed with a guillotine blade. The scarfing blade and the guillotine blade each are secured to their respective holders by a cam pin which coacts with a cam surface to bring an eccentric portion of the cam pin into wedging coaction with the blade in response to rotation of the pin and firmly and wedgingly secure the blade to its respective holder. The blade may be removed from the respective holder by simply rotating the cam pin a fraction of a revolution and then withdrawing the blade. A new or reground blade is replaced in the respective holder by simple insertion into the holder and rotation of the cam pin a fraction of a revolution in the opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 4870882
Abstract: Mechanism for controlling the rate of travel of a saw as the saw operates and travels upon a radial arm. A housing contains fluid and an axially movable piston and piston rod. A wheel is operably joined to the piston rod and is connected to the piston rod so that the piston rod moves axially as the wheel rotates. A cable is wound upon the wheel and extends from the wheel and is connected to the saw. As the saw is moved upon the radial arm the cable rotates the wheel, and the wheel forces axial movement of the piston rod and the piston. Movement of the piston forces movement of fluid within the housing. The pressure of the fluid controls the rate of axial movement of the piston and the piston rod and controls the rate of rotary movement of the wheel. Thus, the rate of travel of the cable and the rate of travel of the saw are controlled by the rate at which the piston travels as the piston moves fluid within the housing.

  • Patent number: 4869141
Abstract: A punch press has a ram assembly with a lower portion which is rotatable and reciprocatable about a vertical axis and, a die holder which is rotatable about the same axis. A gear mechanism is coupled between a drive motor and the lower portion of the ram assembly and the die holder to effect simultaneous rotation thereof, which effects reorientation of the tooling relative to the X and Y axes of the punch press. In this fashion, rotation of the tooling will enable a single set of tooling to effect cutouts of different orientation in a workpiece relative to the X and Y axes, and movement of the sheet material along the X and Y axes together with such rotation of the tooling enables complex configurations to be nibbled or cutout with a limited number of sets of tools.
