  • Patent number: 3939798
Abstract: Disclosed is an improved optical thin film coating system comprising all essential elements of resistive and electron beam evaporation systems, chemical vapor deposition systems and reactive plasma deposition systems. Sequences of cleaning and deposition processes which previously required moving substrates through several chambers are performed in a single vacuum chamber. The evaporative sources also efficiently vaporize solid materials to provide reactive gases for reactive plasma and chemical vapor deposition processes, which were previously difficult or impossible to perform. Substrate movement, masking, and monitoring means previously used with evaporative sources are used to control thickness and uniformity of films deposited by chemical vapor and reactive plasma processes, to provide optical quality films.

  • Patent number: 3939800
Abstract: An apparatus for depositing electrostatically and magnetically responsive particulate matter on a conductive surface having an electrostatically charged latent image comprises an elongate permanent magnet that is disposed adjacent to the conductive surface and that is capable of producing a magnetic field having a region of concentrated magnetic flux that permeates the surface and also a region of dilute magnetic flux that is inclined and generally adjacent to the surface, a hopper for storing the particulate matter, and a channel connected to the hopper disposed in the region of dilute magnetic flux having two opposite converging walls that terminate adjacent to the conductive surface in the region of concentrated magnetic flux. The particulate matter when introduced to the region of dilute magnetic flux is caused to be moved by magnetic forces and gravitational forces from the region of dilute magnetic flux to the region of concentrated magnetic flux.

  • Patent number: 3937175
Abstract: Method and apparatus for automatically spraying a liquid on the surface of a moving object, particularly developer, rinse and gumming liquids on an exposed, photosensitive printing plate, in which the liquid is continuously supplied to a distribution line at a predetermined pressure, and simultaneously with the supply of liquid, the object is transported past a spray means connected to the distribution line, an impinging spray of the liquid is alternately applied to the object for a first predetermined period and the application is interrupted for a second predetermined period and the cycle is repeated a plurality of times during the passage of the object past the spray means, as by a solenoid valve mounted in the distribution line and a timer connected to the solenoid valve to open and close the same.

  • Patent number: 3937179
Abstract: Objects are coated using apparatus which includes a mechanical barrier effectively interposed between a cloud of particles which is produced thereby, and the travel path for objects conveyed therethrough. The barrier means includes an upstanding baffle having an edge portion configured to progressively expose different vertical portions of the object as it is conveyed thereby. Generally, at the beginning of the travel path the lower portions of the objects will be masked by the baffle so as to promote deposition of the particles upon the upper surfaces initially. As it proceeds along the travel path, progressive exposure of the lower portions of the object will permit the complete and uniform coating thereof.

  • Patent number: 3937180
Abstract: Disclosed herein are a method and apparatus for progressively charging an electrically isolated conductive workpiece from ground potential to high potential while the workpiece is supported by a moving grounded conveyor. A portion of the conveyor is selectively included in circuit with a high voltage source and a voltage divider to charge the isolated conveyed workpieces to high electrostatic potential with respect to ground. The highly charged workpieces are conveyed past a grounded spray device dispersing atomized particles (i.e., liquid or powder) which are at electrical ground potential. In accordance with well known electrostatic coating principles, the particles will be attracted to the high potential workpiece parts and will adhere thereto.

  • Patent number: 3934549
Abstract: An apparatus in which one component of at least a two component mix deposited on a support surface is transferred to a sheet of support material. Initially, the attractive force between the support surface and mix is reduced, preconditioning the mix. Thereafter, the other component of the pre-conditioned mix is removed from the support surface. The remaining one component of the pre-conditioned mix is then transferred from the support surface to the sheet of support material.

  • Patent number: 3934545
Abstract: An apparatus for enrobing discrete objects. The device includes a perforated drum adapted to receive and tumble a charge of discrete objects to be coated and which is rotatable about its horizontal axis. The tumbling charge is periodically wetted with coating material and is dried by a stream of selectively conditioned air passed through the charge. During the initial phase of each drying operation a high velocity conditioned air stream employing a high percentage of reconditioned air is employed that effects rapid drying without deleteriously affecting the surface of the coated objects. During the final phase of each drying operation velocities are reduced and higher percentages of unrecirculated conditioned air is employed to assure continuity of drying with a concomitant production of an optimum surface of coating material thereon.

  • Patent number: 3930466
Abstract: An apparatus is provided which limits the amount of developer that is presented to an electrostatic latent image to a width corresponding to the length of copy paper used. This particular apparatus and method apply to a development system which has a developer sump communicated to a magnetic transport means through a developer outlet at the lower end of the sump. During development functions, magnetic developer flows from the sump through the outlet to the magnetic transport means to be presented to the latent image. A plurality of magnetic gates are provided, each of which; may be swung into closed position adjacent the outlet to magnetically block flow of developer through that portion of the outlet corresponding to the length of the magnetic gate adjacent thereto. Each magnetic gate may also be swung into an open position which allows developer to flow through the outlet corresponding to the length of the magnetic gate adjacent thereto.
