  • Patent number: 4860426
Abstract: A hot profile-steel workpiece having a flange width dimension, a web height dimension, and a web thickness dimension is rolled in a roll train including a reversible univerial rolling stand and a flange-compacting roll stand unstream therefrom. According to the invention one of the height, width, or thickness dimensions of the incoming workpiece is reduced upstream of the flange-engaging compacting roll stand. Normally the web height dimension is reduced in a roll stand immediately upstream of the universal and flange-compacting stands. Furthermore the workpiece has a web with extra-thick parts and these extra-thick parts are rolled out by horizontal rolls of a roll stand that engage this web. The flange-compacting roll stand engages the faces of the flanges. With this system it is possible to make the web of the incoming workpiece either shorter or taller, that is it can either be compacted or rolled out.

  • Patent number: 4856312
Abstract: During the rounding of sheet-metal blanks, problems have hitherto arisen in the rounding apparatus (2) because the leading edge of the rounded sheet-metal blanks struck against a stationary stop at the end (48) of a slit (24) between an inner shell (20) and an outer shell (22), so that the sheet-metal blank rebounded and did not have a defined starting position for further conveying. In order to overcome this problem, the stop is constructed in the form of a pivotally movable damping flap (50) on which there is formed a catch hook (54) which closes the slit (24) at its end (48). Compression springs (70) are disposed between the damping flap (50) and the inner shell (20). Under the impact of the sheet-metal blank, the catch hook (54) yields and urges the damping flat (50) about the pivot axis (52) pressing its front portion (50') into the slit (24) as a result of which the sheet-metal blank is temporarily clamped against the outer shell (22).

  • Patent number: 4852790
Abstract: An apparatus and method for continuously manufacturing optical fiber cable in which optical fiber is encased by an hermetically sealed homogeneous metal tube formed from flat metal strips. A first assembly of mating rollers having successively different shapes forms the flat metal strip into a partially formed tube having a longitudinal gap. Optical fiber is guided through the gap to lie within the partially formed tube. The tube is then closed by a second assembly of mating rollers having successively different shapes. A laser beam is used to weld the seam closed without filler metal and without heat shielding between the seam and the optical fiber. The finished tubing with optical fiber therein is sunk by being drawn through wire dies to reduce the diameter. A wheel draws the tubing through the apparatus at constant speed to effect a uniform weld line.

  • Patent number: 4831856
Abstract: An apparatus for bending single or multiple stacked flat sections of finned heat exchanger coil into a predetermined configuration having one, two or three generally 90 degree bends. The coil is moved along a support table to a bending station by a gripper mechanism engaged with the rear end of the coil. A portion of the coil forward of the position to be bent is clamped against an anvil by a clamping pad. A hold-down assembly prevents another portion of the coil rearward of the bend portion from raising off the support table as the anvil and clamping pad are rotated by a supporting spindle to bend the coil to the desired angle. The gripper mechanism is accelerated linearly forwardly in coordinated movement with the rotational acceleration of the spindle to prevent distortion of the coil fins by crowding material into the bend. The gripper mechanism is moved linearly along the support table by a controlled ball screw drive mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4827756
Abstract: An improved fastener provides axially extending teeth on a narrow shoulder adjacent the fastener head. The teeth bite into sheet material, and are particularly useful in biting into the surface of a thin sheet which is fastened to a thicker sheet material. The teeth extend from a shoulder formed on a medial collar between the head and a threaded shank. The narrow shoulder has a larger diameter than the end of the threaded shank to which the shoulder is joined. The teeth can be formed by cold-flow of the material of the shoulder so that the teeth axially extend from the outer peripheral edge of the shoulder in order to bite into the thin sheet metal proximate the annular periphery of the aperture in which the threaded shank is engaged. Preferably, the teeth axially overlap the threading of the shank which extends entirely to its junction with the shoulder, and the teeth are fabricated after the shank thread in order to enable such overlap by the teeth.
