  • Patent number: 4893491
Abstract: A method of forming coil springs by means of a single forming tool comprising the steps of bending a wire feed from a quill by applying a forming surface of the tip of a forming tool to the wire fed, forming a straight portion be separating the forming surface from the wire, changing the direction of the forming surface by rotating the forming tool about the axis of the quill, and again applying the forming surface to the wire to bend it in a different direction. Subsequently, these steps are repeated to form a coil spring having hook portions and a coiled portion of predetermined configuration and size. In accordance with the present invention, since a single tool is used for a variety of tools, a simplified apparatus can be provided.

  • Patent number: 4891244
Abstract: A method of making locking threaded fasteners having on the threaded surfaces thereof locking patch material formed by the accumulation of fused thermoplastic resin particles. The fasteners are advanced through a heating zone followed by an application zone. The fasteners are heated while in the heating zone to a temperature sufficient to fuse thermoplastic resin particles received on the threaded surfaces in the application zone. Thermoplastic resin particles are applied to the fasteners in the application zone by a mechanical propelling device which comprises a rotatable slinger that propels the particles by centrifugal force against the heated threaded surfaces. The thermoplastic resin particles build up on the threaded surfaces and fuse into locking patches. Apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4889453
Abstract: A tapped hole produced in a metallic material by threading a preselected standard threaded fastener into an untapped hole formed in the material. The diameter of the hole to be formed is determined by using a formula that takes into account the hardness and thickness of the material to be tapped and the basic major diameter and pitch of the preselected threaded fastener to be used to tap the hole. This formula can only be used with threaded fasteners having threads of the Unified Thread Standard type. This formula is particularly useful in tapping a hole formed in a mounting strap of an electrical wiring device.

  • Patent number: 4881394
Abstract: In the wall ironing of a deep-drawn cylindrical body, two ironing ring die regions provide respectively immediately successive first and second thickness reduction phases which take place simultaneously with a relatively small reduction occurring in the first phase and a relatively large reduction occurring in the second phase. Lubricant is applied to the outer surface of the body via inlet between the two die regions. To achieve a high mount of reduction with low applied force, the annular space bounded by the contact regions of the body with said two die regions and the portion of the body located between said two contact regions is fluid-tightly sealed, apart from inlet or inlets for said lubricant, and said space is so shaped and the lubricant is applied through said inlet or inlets at such a pressure that at the second die region hydrodynamic lubrication of the body and die region is achieved.

  • Patent number: 4866967
Abstract: To obtain flat component strips from a cold-rolled metal strip inexpensively and with the minimum use of technical apparatus, slitting shears 5 are disposed between sets of tensioning drums 3, 4; 11, 12, more particularly between the inlet side set of tensioning drums 3, 4 and a straightening unit 6 of a stretch flattening apparatus for a metal strip 1. This arrangement of the slitting shears eliminates the additional stretch flattening of the component strips otherwise required after the metal strip itself has already been stretch flattened. The component strips between the two sets of tensioning drums 3, 4; 11, 12 also acquire the same length.
