Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method for improving the formability of an aluminum alloy sheet by locally modifying the surface of the aluminum alloy sheet. The method comprises: a sheet fixing step of fixing a sheet to be locally surface-modified; and a local surface modification step comprising adhering a probe closely to a region of the fixed sheet, which is in need of surface modification, by the application of pressure, and then rotationally moving the probe on the region at high speed. According to the method, the region of the sheet in which a fracture can occur due to the concentration of strains and stresses during the formation of the aluminum alloy sheet into a product is subjected to local surface modification so as to improve the formability of the aluminum alloy sheet compared to the parent metal, so that the aluminum alloy sheet can be easily formed into a product.

  • Patent number: 7316142
Abstract: The present metal spin forming head includes two sets of rollers, with each set having a series of individual metal working rollers therein. The rollers of each set are circumferentially spaced evenly about the head, with each of the rollers of the second set being evenly positioned between corresponding rollers of the first set. The second roller set may be in a non-coplanar relationship with the first roller set. The first roller set comprises rollers having relatively broad widths, for forming the general contours of the workpiece. The second roller set comprises rollers having relatively narrow rims for forming circumferential grooves in the workpiece, resulting in corresponding beads within the workpiece for securing an article therein. The rollers are controlled independently of one another by a programmable logic control capable of driving the rollers cyclically as the workpiece (or spin forming head) rotates to form non-cylindrical shapes.

  • Patent number: 7296453
Abstract: A method of making nano/sub-micron sized grains in a work piece material having a lateral side has the steps of providing a die. The die has an entrance channel with a longitudinal axis and an exit channel. The entrance channel and the exit channel are connected to one another to form an angle. The method has the step of providing a first sacrificial material with a complementary size to the work piece and placing the sacrificial first material and the work piece in an entrance channel. The first sacrificial material and the work piece are aligned with the longitudinal axis. The method has the step of extruding the combination of the first sacrificial material, and the work piece through the intersection of the entrance and the exit channels. The resulting shear deformation forms the nano/sub-micron sized grains in the work piece. This configuration reduces frictional effects thereby producing homogenous nano grain structure.

  • Patent number: 7293443
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a seamless pipe, capable of preventing the carburization phenomenon that occurs in a manufacturing process of pipe and simplifying an elongation rolling process, is provided. In this method, after piercing in the piercing rolling process, rolling is performed without using an inside regulating tool in the elongation rolling process, or without performing the elongation rolling followed by reducing rolling in a reducing rolling process, and thickening is then performed by use of a cold mill or cold draw bench in a cold rolling process. According to this method, the trap of graphite fine particles in the inner and outer surfaces of the pipe that took place in the conventional elongation rolling process can be minimized to prevent the carburization of the pipe. The method of the present invention is effective, particularly as a measure for preventing the carburization of an ultra-low carbon stainless steel or high alloy steel.
