  • Patent number: 7176827
Abstract: An apparatus for redirecting radiation including a polarization dependent reflector and an optical component able to transform the polarisation of radiation as it passes through the component. Radiation having a first polarisation component impinging upon the reflector from a source is reflected towards a scene area. Radiation not having this polarisation component passes through the reflector. The radiation having the first polarisation is then transmitted towards a scene via the optical component. As the radiation passes via the optical component, reflects back from the scene and passes again via the optical component, the polarisation is changed to state where it can now pass through the polarisation dependent reflector. The apparatus allows a scene to be illuminated as if the illuminator were positioned at the viewpoint of an imaging system, and so aids uniform illumination of the scene.

  • Patent number: 7169256
Abstract: A plasma processor processing a workpiece includes sources having frequencies 2 MHz, 27 MHz, and 60 MHz, applied by three matching networks to an electrode in a vacuum chamber including the workpiece. Alternatively 60 MHz is applied to a second electrode by a fourth matching network. The matching networks, substantially tuned to the frequencies of the sources driving them, include series inductances so the 2 MHz inductance exceeds the 27 MHz network inductance, and the 27 MHz network inductance exceeds the inductances of the 60 MHz networks. The matching networks attenuate by at least 26 DB the frequencies of the sources that do not drive them. Shunt inductors between the 27 and 60 MHz sources decouple 2 MHz from the 27 and 60 MHz sources. A series resonant circuit (resonant to about 5 MHz) shunts the 2 MHz network and the electrode to help match the 2 MHz source to the electrode.

  • Patent number: 7161312
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for operating a fluorescent tube having a pair of filaments. The system comprises a transformer, an AC signal generator and a coupling device. The AC signal generator is connected to drive a primary AC signal onto the primary winding of the transformer and to thereby create a secondary AC signal on the secondary winding of the transformer. The secondary winding of the transformer is coupled between the filaments of the fluorescent tube at first terminals thereof. The coupling device is coupled between the filaments at second terminals thereof. The coupling device is switchable between a conducting state, wherein a majority of the current associated with the secondary AC signal is conducted by the coupling device, and a non-conducting state wherein a voltage drop across the coupling device is sufficient to cause a majority of the current associated with the secondary AC signal to arc between the filaments of the fluorescent tube.

  • Patent number: 7129504
Abstract: Generating and frequency tuning of modulated high current electron beams and a specific efficient, high current, frequency-tunable device for generating intense radio frequency (RF), microwave electromagnetic fields in a rectangular waveguide. Current multiplication of a modulated seed electron beam is created by an energetic electron beam impacting a thin foil surface. The transmissive-electron-multiplier foils also mitigate both space charge expansion and improve beam propagation effects, by shorting of the radially directed electric field at the axial location of the foil(s). Foil thinness and intensity of the exit fields provide for a multiplication process occurring in a fraction of an RF period. Also included are both a self-excited microwave generator and an amplifier, using a temporally modulated laser to generate a modulated seed electron beam that is amplified. Methods to tune the oscillator are described that allow tunability over a full waveguide band.

  • Patent number: 7112925
Abstract: Lamp units for radiating a beam ahead of a vehicle in a light distribution pattern are housed in a lamp body. Illumination of the auxiliary lamp units is controlled based on driving conditions. Illumination control means extinguish light through dimming by gradually decreasing voltage applied to the light sources. When the applied voltage has dropped to a threshold value, the applied voltage is controlled to zero immediately. Compared to when the lamps remaining in an illuminated state are suddenly extinguished, a change in quantity of light is mild, and no uncertainty arises. Below a threshold value where the applied voltage gradually drops to the threshold value and a change may arise in the filament crystalline structure due to annealing at a transition temperature, the applied voltage approaches zero. Hence, the filament does not pass from the transition temperature while being rapidly cooled, thus avoiding filament crystalline structure change.
