  • Patent number: 4286382
Abstract: A slider applicator includes a rocker housing pivotally mounted on a support frame for angular movement in a plane transverse of a path of travel of a slide fastener stringer to which a slider is to be applied. The rocker housing supports a support rod on which a slider holder is mounted, the slider holder receiving a slider from a chute when the rocker housing is in a horizontal position. The slider holder is turnable about the axis of the support rod through a train of bevel gear during the angular movement of the rocker housing, so that the slider supported on the slider holder will be oriented for attachment to the stringer when the slider holder reaches its vertical position. Means is mounted on the support frame for adjusting the orientation the slider will have upon the slider holder being in the vertical position.

  • Patent number: 4285112
Abstract: There is disclosed a technique for tightening threaded fasteners in which values of offset torque, initial tension rate relative to angle, final tension rate relative to angle and other joint related factors are empirically determined by instrumenting a plurality of fasteners of the type ultimately to be tightened. In one embodiment, torque and angle are monitored during tightening. Calculations are conducted, while tightening, to determine the tension prevailing in the bolt at a particular angle of advance. By using the calculated tension value and the particular angle of advance, an instantaneous position of threading advance on the tension-angle curve of the fastener is established. From this instantaneous position, it is determined how much greater angle of advance or how much torque is required to tighten the fasteners to a final desired tension value. The same technique may also be used merely to monitor tightening which is terminated by a different tightening strategy.

  • Patent number: 4283847
Abstract: An apparatus and method for assembling integrated circuits to a printed circuit board wherein integrated circuits with protective carriers are selectively dispensed from a rotary magazine, are removed from the carriers and positioned by the leads on magnetic holders on a continuous conveyor which moves the integrated circuits, thus mounted on the holders, to a lead-forming and trim assembly wherein the leads are bent downwardly and outwardly to form feet and trimmed. Thereafter the integrated circuits are moved, thus mounted on the holders, to a flux-applying assembly wherein flux is applied to the lead feet, then to a solder-applying assembly wherein solder is applied to the lead feet, and then to a program activated X-Y axis table which mounts the printed circuit board. The integrated circuits, with tinned leads, are transferred through magnetic fingers to the printed circuit board wherein electrodes solder the leads to pads on the Board.

  • Patent number: 4274273
Abstract: A method for controlling the temperature of a workpiece in a hot strip mill includes calculating temperature changes of the strip at each mill stand location by determining changes in workpiece deformation resistance and correlating the changes in deformation resistance to changes in temperature. Error corrections are made for changes in rolling speed. The calculated temperature change at each mill stand is used to control water sprays positioned adjacent the mill stands. A temperature sensor is placed downstream of the last mill stand to act as a check on the desired delivery temperature of the workpiece. Temperature discrepancies from the temperature sensor are fed upstream to modify temperature corrections.

  • Patent number: 4272979
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for forging crank throws comprising upsetting a portion of a bar and directing the flowing material to form a preformed part having at the ends of the upset portion two upsets (27a) situated eccentrically to the axis of the bar. To form the ready forging a bending force is applied against the central portion of the preformed part, between the two eccentrical upsets (27a). The bending force is perpendicular to the upsetting force and is opposite to the crests of the eccentrical upsets. During forging operation the bar is fastened between segment dies (20,21) mounted in upper and lower die holders (7,18). The lower die holders (7) are supported by artitulated links (5,11) pivotably mounted to a fixed base. On this base a bending tool (23) is mounted. The upper die holders are slidably mounted to a head, which is fixed to a press ram. To the head an anvil (25) is fastened. This anvil has two working faces, which are interchangeable during the crank throw forging process.

  • Patent number: 4271588
Abstract: A hybrid circuit including IC chips and discrete components wherein a substrate is connected to a lead frame and the lead frame is utilized for securing and positioning the substrate during the mounting and electrical connecting of IC chips and discrete components thereon. Once the entire circuit is connected the lead frame is utilized for securing and positioning the substrate in a transfer mold to encapsulate the substrate with epoxy or the like. In the present invention a pair of matching substrates having interconnected circuits thereon are constructed simultaneously and formed into two interconnected packages which can be tested before or after mounting in a receiving structure. Further, repairs may be made to the final assembly without destruction thereof, since the "component like" circuit package can be replaced without affecting other parts in the system.

  • Patent number: 4269054
Abstract: A rotary pipe bending machine employs a single hydraulic motor to drive clamp and pressure dies toward the bend die and to rotate the bend and clamp dies. The motor piston is connected via a chain to drive a clamp die carrier toward a rotatably mounted bend die and toward a bend die shaft actuator. Upon continued motion of the clamp die carrier, it engages the actuator to rotate the bend die together with a clamp die mounted on the carrier. The motor cylinder is movably mounted and connected to a pressure die carrier so that as the motor piston drives the clamp die carrier and the bend die, the cylinder, reacting to the driving force of the piston, drives the pressure die carrier, together with a pressure die thereon, toward the bend die with a force that is produced by reaction to the required bending force. Thus the pipe is frictionally tensioned according to the magnitude of the bending force.

  • Patent number: 4269053
Abstract: An improvement to the method of making a structure by superplastic forming, wherein portions of a preform are expanded, in the superplastic condition, against a forming member, is disclosed. The improvement comprises the step, prior to expanding the preform, of providing a lower coefficient of friction between the portions of the preform to be expanded and the forming member than which exists between the portions of the preform where expansion is intended to be minimal and the forming member. The two values of coefficient of friction are obtained by applying first and second release coatings to the portions of the preform to be expanded and those where expansion is to be minimal respectively, with the first release coating having a coefficient of friction less than the second release coating. Alternately, the first and second release coatings can be applied to the forming member. The preferred first and second release coatings are boron nitride and yttria respectively.
