  • Patent number: 4249406
Abstract: A machine and method for forming line pipe is disclosed wherein small diameter roll elements not exceeding five times the thickness of the blank form a tube. The roll elements positioned in a pyramid roll assembly are dynamically adjustable toward and away from each other to provide different size line pipe, or similar tubular articles. The segments of the upper roll elements are mounted on cantilever arms, the leading edge of blank being deflected against the upper curved surface of the arms during the final stages of forming. The deflection is maintained within the elastic recovery limit of the metal. A rigid frame mounts the cantilever arm and other components. The frame includes a plurality of vertical bed plates and corresponding upper frame plates and cross tie members. A pusher mechanism pushes the sheet blank through the pyramid roll assembly. A multi-walled tube may be formed by providing the required additional length to the blank and continuation of the forming beyond 360.degree..

  • Patent number: 4246685
Abstract: There is disclosed a technique for tightening threaded fasteners in which values of offset torque, initial tension rate relative to angle, final tension rate relative to angle and other joint related factors are empirically determined by instrumenting a plurality of fasteners of the type ultimately to be tightened. In one embodiment, torque and angle are monitored during tightening. Calculations are conducted, while tightening, to determine the tension prevailing in the bolt at a particular angle of advance. By using the calculated tension value and the particular angle of advance, an instantaneous position of threading advance on the tension-angle curve of the fastener is established. From this instantaneous position, it is determined how much greater angle of advance or how much torque is required to tighten the fasteners to a final desired tension value. The same technique may also be used merely to monitor tightening which is terminated by a different tightening strategy.

  • Patent number: 4244202
Abstract: A readily adjustable machine which continuously produces corrugated flexible metal tubing from very light gauge metal and of various diameters. A warping ring receives therewithin a longitudinally corrugated narrow strip of formable metal of light gauge and warps the same helically to produce convolutions by means of a helical warping surface which extends into one of the longitudinal corrugations. The size of the tube produced can be varied by merely substituting a warping ring of a different size. A uniquely shaped pair of die-forming rollers have lock-seam forming surfaces which are adjustable relative to each other to provide variation in the degree to which the seam will permit and withstand axial torque. The lock seam is constructed to be symmetrical about the neutral axis of the corrugation and about the slope line of the common corrugation leg of adjacent convolutions which it constitutes.

  • Patent number: 4244068
Abstract: A method and apparatus for machining pipe collars having internally tapered coaxial threads is accomplished by providing spaced sets of threading teeth on one side of a tool support bar of the numerically controlled machine with the spaced sets of threading teeth being oriented in generally parallel relation with the longitudinal axis of the tool support bar. The spaced sets of threaded teeth are then moved through the rotating collar by the tool support bar, following the desired internal taper with the orientation of the sets of thread forming teeth remaining substantially parallel with the axis of the tool support bar and the tool support bar being maintained in substantially parallel relation with the axis of the collar being formed. The sets of threading teeth form respective ones of the threaded tapers while the opposite set of thread forming teeth trace but remain clear of the thread being formed.

  • Patent number: 4242787
Abstract: According to the method for joining a fiberglass plastic rod to a metal fitting of an electrical device, a bore is first provided in the metal fitting, the diameter of said bore being somewhat greater than that of the fiberglass plastic rod. One of the rod's ends is then installed in the bore, and the gap defined between the bore formed in the metal fitting and fiberglass plastic rod is filled with a porous material. The whole is then compressed by using the pulse loading technique. The use of pulse loading for joining the fiberglass plastic rod to the metal fitting makes it possible to develop a high pressure in the zone of the joint without destroying the rod; this task is facilitated by the presence of the porous layer between the rod and metal fitting. Compression by pulse loading does not necessitate the use of expensive equipment, nor does it impose stringent accuracy requirements upon the elements to be joined.

  • Patent number: 4241468
Abstract: The disclosed shank slot dial has two equi-diameter cylindrical members each having a like plurality of axial notches equally spaced around the circumferential surface of the member. Mating helical thread means formed on the members concentrically of the notched surfaces allow for relative rotation of the members, which adjustably varies the axial spacing between the surfaces for proper support of the shanks to be fixtured in the dial. Keying means in the form of an axial grove on one member and a radially movable set screw on the other member nonrotatably hold the members at selected axial spacings and with the notches longitudinally aligned. The shank components supported in the dial thereby are abutted only at their end sections in corresponding aligned pairs of notches and bridge across at their intermediate sections the spacing between the notched surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4238878
Abstract: A method and apparatus for assembling together a rectangular outer tube, a rectangular inner tube and thin flat elongated panels having their side surfaces solidly abutted between the inner wall of the outer tube and the outer wall of the inner tube. The assembly is expanded by applying an internal pressure of at least a thousand psi into contact with a die cavity of rectangular cross-section. In order to minimize the required expansion of the tubes it is desirable that the inner tube conform as closely as possible to the space between the panels prior to expansion. In order to facilitate insertion of the panels, the inner tube is subjected to a controlled collapse in which its sidewalls are curved inwardly and its corners are displaced radially inwardly to provide additional clearance for insertion of the panels. After insertion of the panels the walls of the inner tube are formed outwardly to fit relatively closely within the space defined by the panels.
