  • Patent number: 4329778
Abstract: A slide slidably mounted on an arm secured to an indexing plate has a slider seat for supporting thereon a slider body with its pull tab inserted in a slot defined between the slide and the arm. The slider pull tab is immovably held in the slot by a ball mounted in the arm and spring-biased into an aperture in the pull tab. Upon holding of the pull tab, the slide is slightly moved under the resiliency of a spring to lift the slider body until a locking pawl to which the pull tab is connected is withdrawn out of a slider guide channel. A block mounted on a fixed frame contains a spring-biased presser which, upon lateral alignment with the spring-biased ball, forces the ball into locking engagement with the pull tab in the slot, thereby locking the slider for application to a pair of slide fastener stringers.

  • Patent number: 4329093
Abstract: A die-head of a cutting machine comprising a pair of relatively rotatable annular plates which movably hold cutting tools therebetween, a tool retracting lever with a stop, pivotally connected to one of the annular plates, a slide integrally connected to the other annular plate and peripherally pressed by a spring, and a pivotable cam plate with a projection bearing against the stop, the slide having a groove into which is engaged the projection of the cam plate, whereby the displacement of the lever, resulting from the movement of a workpiece causes the cam plate to rotate, thus resulting in a rotation of the slide to automatically retract the cutting tools.

  • Patent number: 4327469
Abstract: A method for mounting a ring-shaped construction on a ship stern in front of a propeller which comprises fixing a plurality of pieces at a predetermined distance along a periphery of a ring-shaped construction, marking the points respectively on a plurality of said pieces which are located in a same distance from the center of said ring-shaped construction, and mounting said ring-shaped construction to said ship stern. In this process, centering so that the circular locus of the beam emitted from a projector being rotated around the rotating axis of a propeller passes over said marked points of a plurality of pieces fixed to said ring-shaped construction, the settling position of said ring-shaped construction is adjusted.

  • Patent number: 4326662
Abstract: The ultrasonic soldering of continuously drawn coilable aluminum tube to provide soldered socket joints is improved where the tube, after continuous and sequential drawing to produce a work hardened tube, is subjected to a burnishing operation by being drawn through a burnishing die. The burnishing operation differs from the drawing operation used to produce the continuously drawn tube in that the burnishing does not substantially alter the wall thickness of the tube. The burnishing dies condition the outer tube surface to be more wettable by molten solder metal in fluxless ultrasonic soldering processes.

  • Patent number: 4325184
Abstract: Improvements in apparatus of the type including a mandrel around which a continuous filament is coiled and which has a guide channel formed longitudinally therein for slidably receiving a continuous core to be positioned within the coil, and a mandrel holder holding the mandrel adjacent one end thereof and reciprocating with the latter in the longitudinal direction thereof in step with the formation of each convolution of the coil. A unit length of the core required for each coil convolution is forcibly pulled away from a core pay-off bobbin by a pair of pull-out rolls actuated intermittently by a ratchet mechanism. The mandrel holder has formed therein passageways through which the core travels from the pull-out roll pair to the entrance end of the guide channel in the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4323186
Abstract: A method is described for obtaining extrusion products of "high performance" alloy wire of small cross section in an economical fashion. The ratio of length to cross section of cast "high performance" alloy preforms limits the length of a filled billet to less than the optimum which may be extruded on available extrusion presses where it is desired to obtain small diameter extrusion products in a single extrusion. This limitation is overcome by squaring the ends of cast lengths of the alloy and then butt welding such lengths to compositely form preforms of the maximum length capable of being extruded on a given extrusion press. The composite preforms are extruded in a filled billet in accordance with the teachings of U.S. Pat. No. 4,209,122. The extrusion products from these composite preforms have the same desirable properties described in that patent and extend the benefits described therein.

  • Patent number: 4320567
Abstract: In a method for determining the machinability of a metal substrate for use in an electromechanical recording apparatus a surface of a foundation is coated with a layer of metal. The metal layer is machined such that the metalized surface of the foundation is substantially flat and smooth. After the machining step, the metal surface is inspected for depressions with a microscope using a differential interference contrast technique. The number of depressions observed is indicative of the machinability of the coated foundation.

  • Patent number: 4320646
Abstract: A cooling conveyor arrangement for rolled wire or wire rod which has left a water cooler has a loop-forming device which deposits the wire in overlapping loops on an air-cooling conveyor. To obtain a shorter cooling path, which is desirable for high-grade steels to reduce the rate of cooling, the loops fall onto a conveyor portion and are carried by a conveyor portion to a coil-forming station where the loops are collected. To obtain a longer cooling path a removable conveyor portion is switched into place so that the loops are carried along a conveyor portion to an opening where they fall onto a conveyor portion. A conveyor portion is swung into alignment with the portion carrying the loops to feed the loops to the coil-forming station.

  • Patent number: 4318289
Abstract: Material is drawn from a roll of flat stock, passed through a pipe forming machine, and welded to provide a continuous length of pipe which is stored in a variable size loop. Pipe is withdrawn from the loop by means of a series of pipe straightening and feeding rollers which feeds the pipe to a bending machine. The bending machine is suspended from an overhead platform for rotation about a vertical axis and carries a shearing cutter so that multi-bend pipe sections, such as automobile exhaust pipes, may be bent, severed and dropped onto a conveyor for inspection and disposition while the pipe is being continuously formed from the flat stock. Distance between bends and plane of bend are respectively controlled by the pipe feeder and the bend machine rotation. Differences between forming and bending rates are compensated by varying the amount of pipe in the storage loop.

  • Patent number: 4317349
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for the manufacture of a screw-line shaped reinforcement spiral out of metal wire for the reinforcement of concrete pipes or columns. The wire is, while subject to tensile stress, wound onto a cylindrical last whose diameter is equal to the inner diameter of the spiral. The wire, before coming onto the last, passes over a roll that prestresses the wire to a curve of such a small diameter that, after the wire has been taken off the curve, a tension tending to bend the wire in the direction of bending of the reinforcement spiral remains in the wire. The winding takes place so that at the immediate proximity of the initial end of the last the wire passes over rolls. The first roll, whose projection is partly outside the projection of the mantle of the last and which gives the wire a curve radius smaller than the radius of the last, makes a tension bending in the wire in the direction of bending of the reinforcement spiral which bended remain in the wire.

  • Patent number: 4315421
Abstract: A method of and system for controlling the oil concentration in and the stability of an oil-in-water emulsion used as a coolant-lubricant in a metalworking operation in which a portion of the emulsion is circulated through a sensor to monitor its density and to generate a signal relating the density to the oil concentration. The signal is employed to control addition of oil to the emulsion to thereby control the concentration within close limits. Sensing means also monitors the stability of the circulated emulsion, and emulsifier is added, as required, either to the oil to be added or directly to the emulsion to thereby control both the oil concentration in and the stability of the emulsion.
