  • Patent number: 4237604
Abstract: An apparatus for interengaging a pair of rows of slide fastener coupling elements on a pair of stringer tapes, respectively, with a pair of top end stops mounted on the stringer tapes respectively at confronting ends of the rows of coupling elements, includes a base and a pairing guide mounted on the base and normally defining a substantially Y-shaped guide channel including a pair of branched guide passages for receiving disengaged rows of coupling elements, respectively, and a joint passage for discharging interengaged rows of coupling elements. The pairing guide comprises first guide means fixed to the base and including first flange means defining the branched guide passages, and second guide means movably supported on the base and including second flange means normally defining the joint passage. The Y-shaped guide channel is thus normally defined jointly by the first and second flange means.

  • Patent number: 4237605
Abstract: A machine for assembling washers on headed screw blanks, comprises a turntable having peripheral recesses into which the washers are inserted. Elevators in the form of vertically swinging arms are mounted on the turntable about the periphery thereof, extending generally radially of the turntable, and are cam controlled to swing vertically relative to the turntable. In their upwardly swung position, recesses in the outer ends of the arms receive screw blanks beneath the heads thereof, the arms then swinging downwardly to insert the screw blanks in the washers that are in alignment below the screw blanks on the turntable. At the discharge side of the turntable, a slideway is provided for complete assemblies; but incomplete assemblies are detected and are disassembled with the parts returned to storage.

  • Patent number: 4236304
Abstract: A device for spreading apart a pair of tapes such as a pair of slide fastener stringer tapes for enabling attachment of a slider thereto. The spreading device includes a pair of lower grip members movable away from each other on a horizontal base, and a pair of upper grip members vertically aligned with the lower grip members, respectively, and displaceable away from each other. The upper grip members are mounted through a pair of collapsible crossing links on a drive shaft vertically movable toward the base. The tapes are disposed on the lower grip members, respectively, and sandwiched firmly between the upper and lower grip members when the drive shaft is lowered to press the upper grip members against the lower grip members. Continued downward movement of the drive shaft causes the crossing links to collapse, whereupon the upper grip members and hence the lower grip members move away from each other, thereby spreading apart the tapes.

  • Patent number: 4235006
Abstract: There is disclosed a technique for tightening threaded fasteners in which values of offset torque, initial tension rate relative to angle, final tension rate relative to angle and other joint related factors are empirically determined by instrumenting a plurality of fasteners of the type ultimately to be tightened. In one embodiment, torque and angle are monitored during tightening. Calculations are conducted, while tightening, to determine the tension prevailing in the bolt at a particular angle of advance. By using the calculated tension value and the particular angle of advance, an instantaneous position of threading advance on the tension-angle curve of the fastener is established. From this instantaneous position, it is determined how much greater angle of advance or how much torque is required to tighten the fasteners to a final desired tension value. The same technique may also be used merely to monitor tightening which is terminated by a different tightening strategy.

  • Patent number: 4233830
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the continuous production of bright copper rod from stock discharged from a continuous casting machine in which an oxide layer formed on the stock during its passage from the continuous casting machine in the atmosphere is subjected to an initial breakage and separation operation by discharging a chemically active liquid at a relatively low pressure against the oxide layer followed by descaling the stock after the initiation of the breakage of the layer by projecting jets of liquid at a relatively high pressure against the stock. The stock which is now free from oxide layer is rolled in a rolling mill in the presence of cooling and lubricating liquid which isolates the stock from the outside atmosphere and allows the formation of rod in the stands of the rolling mill. The rod obtained from the rolling mill is cooled by passage through a duct in counterflow with a cooling liquid such that the rod leaves the duct at a temperature below 80.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 4231145
Abstract: Method and apparatus for attaching a transducer to an object having characteristics to be measured. At least two attachment elements each including a number of pointed members are interconnected by a sensing element. Each attachment element includes a movable wedge member and at least one fixed wedge member whereby initial movement of the movable wedge member with respect to the fixed wedge member subjects said pointed members to a pressure force of a specified magnitude to press the pointed members into the surface of the object. Further movement of the movable wedge member with respect to the fixed wedge member generates a holding force on the pointed members less than the initial pressure force to hold each attachment element in engagement with the object regardless of transverse forces acting on the attachment elements.

  • Patent number: 4229875
Abstract: A fatigue resistant bolt, and method for making same, is disclosed. Bolts which are tightened to very high loads and are subjected to a dynamic environment are particularly subject to fatigue failure. It has been found that a bolt with fatigue resistant properties may be manufactured if its threads are formed while it is subjected to its design load. In another embodiment of the invention it has been found that the fatigue properties of the fillet at the bolt head and shank juncture may be significantly increased if the fillet is cold worked while the bolt is subjected to its design load.

  • Patent number: 4229871
Abstract: The method permits mass-producing axially retained tripod joints having high rigidity and a given prestressing force which is reproducible from one joint to another. According to this method, after having clipped a resiliently yieldable attachment onto a tulip-shaped element of the joint while the joint is in its assembled position, the value of the gap between the shoulder of a thrust member and a bearing surface of a hub carrying the trunnions is determined for the position of the joint in which the hub and tulip-shaped member are in alignment and the thrust member is axially shifted away from the hub and there is introduced in the gap produced between the thrust member and the hub a shim the thickness of which is chosen to be slightly larger than the gap.
