  • Patent number: 4383362
Abstract: This invention selectively opens and closes the paired clamping members of a flexible skirt hanger by imparting predetermined forces to predetermined parts of said hanger in a predetermined manner. The hanger is held at a work station in a frame during a predetermined work operation which causes said forces to be applied. A pneumatically extended rod causes one of said paired clamping members to move in a predetermined rotational direction while a portion of said frame limits rotations of the other of said clamping members in said predetermined rotational direction, thereby effectively imparting a force to said other clamping member causing it to move in a direction opposite said predetermined rotational direction. The opposite rotational motion of each of said clamping members causes them to open to receive a garment therebetween. Means are provided to close said clamping members on said garment by removing said forces and enabling said clamping members to tend to resume their equilibrium position.

  • Patent number: 4379396
Abstract: A multi-stand rolling mill is operated so that strip of suitable shape and metallurgical properties is produced at a faster speed than possible heretofore by threading the mill at a relatively slow speed and adjusting the rolling loads on the stands to give the required output gauge and rolling temperature at the last stand, thereafter the mill is accelerated and curtains of liquid coolant are applied to the workpiece at one or more interstand locations to ensure that the rolling loads remain substantially the same as when threading and the rolling temperature of the last stand remains substantially constant.

  • Patent number: 4377908
Abstract: Controlling the bending of an overlapping edge portion of a metal shield of a cable core by supporting one side of an edge portion at a position along its feed path and applying pressure against the edge portion immediately downstream of and in a direction opposite to the support. Bending of the edge portion occurs immediately it has passed the support while the support dampers resiliency in the edge portion to prevent or lessen springback. Apparatus for bending is placed immediately upstream of the overlapping die and preferably includes means to vary the applied pressure. Hence, the desired orientation of the bent edge portion is obtainable by varying the pressure dependent upon the actual orientation as the overlapped shield leaves the die.

  • Patent number: 4376384
Abstract: In one aspect, the invention is a novel arrangement for applying forces to urns of a vertically extending helical coil which is wound about a support. The apparatus includes a first rigid member extending towards the turns. A second rigid member extends transversely from the end of the first and has a vertically extending face provided with a generally straight groove extending transversely of the turns. A longitudinal passage in the first member connects to the groove to form therewith a continuous guideway for rollable articles. A rigid lug longitudinally movable in the groove is provided with a projection which extends out of the groove and beneath the bottom of a selected turn of the coil. A train of rigid, rollable articles is disposed in the guideway inwardly of the lug. Means are provided for applying force to that end of the train which is relatively remote from the lug, to urge the latter against the bottom face of the selected turn.

  • Patent number: 4375123
Abstract: Apparatus and method for tightening assemblies held together by threaded fasteners. Prior to tightening, the gradients of a selected number of possible torque-rotation curves for the assembly are established and stored along with the associated tightening torques required to induce a desired preload in the fastener when the assembly is tightened according to the selected torque-rotation curves. As torque and rotation are imparted to the fastener to tighten the assembly, the gradient of the actual torque-rotation curve through which the assembly is taken is calculated. The calculated gradient is compared with the stored gradients to derive that tightening torque which is associated with that stored gradient closest in magnitude to the calculated gradient. The derived tightening torque is used to control the torque applied to the fastener.

  • Patent number: 4372044
Abstract: First end portions (22c) of terminal pins (22) are gripped in a gripping means (54) on one side of a substrate (24) and intermediate portions (22cs) of the pins then are inserted into the substrate. In the insertion operation, second opposite end portions (22i) of the pins are extended into a straightening means (74) on the opposite side of the substrate (24). Tip portions of the first pin end portions (22c) then are disposed in the gripping means (54) and tip portions of the second pin end portions (22i) are disposed in the straightening means (74). To straighten the pins (22), relative reciprocating movement then is caused between the pin intermediate portions (22cs) and the pin tip portions to flex and coldwork the first and second pin end portions (22c and 22i) in a lateral direction simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 4372141
Abstract: A machine for coiling wire to form any one of a number of different size, type and configuration of coil spring and comprising a machine frame in which is mounted a driveshaft, intermediate shaft, camshaft, and feed roller shafts. At the work station of the machine appropriate coiling dyes are supported along with one or more cutters mounted adjacent thereto. The wire is fed to the work station via a pair of feed rollers driven at variable speed, preferably by means of an elliptical gear drive, wherein the feed speed is at a maximum during coiling and decrease to a minimum feed speed for cutting. Wire feed is synchronously interrupted at cutting by means of a cam arrangement that briefly disengaged the feed rollers. This variable speed drive enables a high duty cycle of operation and also enables start up (feed rollers engaging) at reduced speed so as to minimize wire distortion.

  • Patent number: 4370791
Abstract: A prosthetic device which is adjustable in the transverse plane includes a flanged element moldable in a plastic socket and an element having a toothed superior surface. The plastic socket is formed about the flanged element while using the toothed superior surface as a mold surface. A fastener engages the toothed superior surface and this affixes the formed socket to the toothed element. The fastener may be loosened so that incremental rotation of the toothed element relative the socket is permitted.

  • Patent number: 4369560
Abstract: A pair of continuous slide fastener stringers are longitudinally fed by longitudinally reciprocable grip assemblies and driving rollers that is selectively actuatable. As the slide fastener stringers are advanced, one of the stringers is threaded through a slider held fixedly in its path of travel. The slide fastener stringers are cut off transversely across element-free gaps, and then the severed stringer pieces are moved forwardly until their leading end portions are positioned in a molding device, which molds a separable end stop on the leading end portions. The driving rollers are continuously driven to advance the slide fastener stringers until element-free gaps arrive at the cutter, whereupon the driving rollers are de-energized.
