  • Patent number: 5557996
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cutting cloth into shapes for use in quilts or the like. A sheet of transparent material has a first linear slot disposed through a sheet at a first location on the sheet so that a cutter can extend therethrough to cut several layers of cloth. A second linear slot is disposed through the sheet at a second position so that the cutter can be used to cut through cloth located below the second slot. The second slot is oriented at an angle of less than 90.degree. with respect to the first linear slot so that various shapes can be made using the combination of straight and angled cuts.

  • Patent number: 5555785
Abstract: A paper slitting device having first and second pivotally mounted platens with an integral biasing spring between them. The spring is formed by a resilient member extending from the first platen toward the second platen. The resilient member has a free end that is received in slots provided in the second platen and forms a bearing for the first platen and bending about an axis when a force is applied to one of the platens sufficient to move the one platen towards the other platen. The resilient member then returning the one platen to an at rest position when the force is removed.

  • Patent number: 5544559
Abstract: An adjustable stop mechanism for limiting the movement of a rip fence toward the cutting plane of a tiltable panel saw as an automatic function of the selected orientation of an abutment bar. The abutment bar has first and second orientations alternately presenting an abutment face of relatively low height, located at a greater distance from a reference surface, and a relatively greater height, located at a relatively shorter distance from the reference surface. When the abutment bar is rotated to the low height orientation, as to accommodate tilting of the panel saw blade, a limit stop position of movement of the abutment bar toward the cutting plane is automatically altered, so that the limit stop for the abutment bar support is farther away from the cutting plane. When the bar is oriented to present a full height abutment face, the limit stop automatically is altered in response to such orientation, to permit the support to move closer to the cutting plane.

  • Patent number: 5544549
Abstract: A process for producing a steel punching sheet that has the same ideal dimension over the entire length of the punching edge has the following steps: producing webs carrying punching edges on a steel starting sheet; processing the punching edges, wherein the distance between the punching edges and the back of the sheet is adjusted to a positive tolerance with respect to an ideal dimension; and grinding the back of the sheet to remove material in excess of the ideal dimension to within a tolerance of not more than 0.02 mm, more particularly a tolerance of not more than 0.005 mm. Advantageously, the process includes the following additional steps: adjusting the distance between the punching edges and the back of the sheet to a negative tolerance, with respect to an ideal dimension, and applying material to the back of the sheet to make-up for the negative tolerance up to a positive tolerance of not more than 0.02 mm, more particularly, a tolerance of not more than 0.

  • Patent number: 5522292
Abstract: The machine cuts a roll or log (L) of web material into a plurality of small rolls (R). It includes a unit (17) rotating about an axis (A--A) parallel to the axis of the log (L) to be cut. The unit carries a cutting blade (19) rotating about an axis (B--B) parallel to the axis (A--A) of the unit (17). A driving device (61, 63) moves the cutting tool (19) into a reciprocating forward and backward motion parallel to the axis of the log (L) to be cut. At least at the time when the blade cuts the log, the blade moves parallel to the moving log at a translation speed substantially equal to the feeding speed of the log (L), so as to allow the cutting of small rolls (R) without stopping the log (L).

  • Patent number: 5505108
Abstract: In an automated machine for cutting cloth or fabric and similar sheet materials the knife is made from a high-alloy tool steel to provide the knife with a sharp cutting edge capable under a given set of conditions to cut sheet material for a far longer period of time before requiring re-sharpening than the case with the knives previously used in such machines. A sharpener is also provided which allows the knife after becoming dull to be returned to a sharp condition while removing only a minimum amount of the knife material, thereby further increasing the service life of the knife.

  • Patent number: 5503053
Abstract: A sheet material cutting mechanism for cutting sheet materials two rotary blades and a mechanism for pressing down a sheet material to be cut. When the motor is started, a screw shaft 2 rotates, and a rotary blade assembly 4 starts to move to the right in FIG. 1 . Then, the roller 12 rotates by friction with a frame 1, and a first rotary blade 10 rotates by the rotation of a roller. At the same time, a second rotary blade 20 also rotates by the frictional force generated between the rubber roller 22 and the frame 1. The sheet material, fed into the sheet material receiving portion 17, is pressed by the rubber roller 22 against the surface 5 of the frame 1 immediately before cutting to prevent lifting or bending of the sheet material, thereby producing satisfactory cutting of the sheet material.
