  • Patent number: 7853703
Abstract: In one embodiment, device presence enables persistent access to a set of resources, which may be data or services. Unique device identifiers are assigned to different computers of a user to identify the computers of the user of a network. For example, a device identifier is specific for a user and specific for a messaging system. Some time-consuming and device-specific tasks, such as synchronization of photo albums, transmitting files, sharing a printer, etc., may be interrupted temporarily, such as when the computer is restarted. Using the device identifiers, the messaging system can uniquely identify the devices involved in the tasks and detect the presence of the devices so that, after the interruption, the tasks can be resumed without user intervention.

  • Patent number: 7853719
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided that perform automatic URL analysis and correction in a computing system. The systems and methods automatically detect misentered or incorrect URLs, analyzing the invalid URLs with respect intelligent rules and valid URLs, and where a high likelihood exists for alternative URLs being intended, the alternative URLs are presented to the user as suggestions. The URLs used for comparison to the URL input may be collected through multiple channels or from multiple sources, which may be dynamically updated sources, including URLs commonly or newly found on the Web, users' favorite URLs and the like, as well as URLs from a standard URL list or database, all of which may be from one or more multi-lingual domain. In various embodiments, the alternative URL(s) are automatically presented when there is a very high confidence that the alternatives are desirable.

  • Patent number: 7853641
Abstract: There is disclosed a method and a system for accessing information and/or data available on a wide area computer network (100), such as the Internet. A first modulated acoustic signal (A) is transmitted to a group of potential users each provided with a portable communication unit (1, 1*), this first modulated acoustic signal including at least one identifier (ID—1, ID—2, ID—3, . . . ) associated with a link to a determined site of the wide area computer network. These identifiers are stored in the portable communication unit then subsequently downloaded to a computer terminal (50, 51, 52) connected to the wide area computer network. After the downloaded identifier or identifiers have been compared with a determined list of identifiers (ID_A, ID_B, ID_C, . . . ), a list of links (Link_A, Link_B, Link_C, . . . ) to sites corresponding to the downloaded identifier or identifiers is generated by the computer terminal.

  • Patent number: 7849203
Abstract: Provided is a method and apparatus for virtualizing access to resources in a distributed peer-to-peer (P2P) network. Specifically, a resource locally managed by a peer in the P2P network can be published such that other peers can identify the peer managing the resource. Any peer requesting access to the resource of another peer establishes communication to the peer managing the resource. After establishing communication, a proxy of the peer managing the resource can establish a proxy interface. The proxy interface operating on the peer requesting access, permits the peer requesting access to generate command and control data to control the resource. Thus, the peer requesting access believes that it manages the local resource, while in reality, the peer requesting access only has virtualized access to the resource.

  • Patent number: 7844441
Abstract: In general, the present invention provides a method, system and program product for approximating/estimating computer resource consumption of a computer system. Specifically, under the present invention, a more efficient or reduced computer work gradient matrix (hereinafter “matrix”) is first built. This occurs by creating load measurements for a set of computer resource metrics of the computer system to analyze dependencies between different computer resource metrics. Then, a correlation matrix between the set of computer resource metrics is created based on the dependencies. The set of computer system resource metrics in the correlation matrix is thereafter clustered into a set of clusters, and a reduced matrix is built based thereon. Once the reduced matrix is built, it can be restored to a “full” matrix using linear transformation or the like.

  • Patent number: 7844685
Abstract: An information processing apparatus and method, information management apparatus and method, recording medium, and program that permit efficient use of hardware resources and distribute contents with ease are provided. When communication can be established via a network (when the line is available), clients 11-1 through 11-3, which have acquired contents from a contents distribution server and stored them, transmit the stored contents to remote clients in accordance with destination designation information attached to the contents. For example, client 11-1 transmits the contents, which have been acquired from the contents distribution server and stored, to clients 12-1 and 12-2, which are designated as destination clients by the destination designation information. The present invention can be applied, for example, to a router or a personal computer providing a communication section and a hard disk or other storage medium.

  • Patent number: 7844700
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a system, method, and computer-readable medium for identifying malware at a network transit point such as a computer that serves as a gateway to an internal or private network is provided. A network transmission is scanned for malware at a network transit point without introducing additional latency to the transmission of data over the network. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a computer-implemented method for identifying malware at a network transit point is provided. More specifically, when a packet in a transmission is received at the network transit point, the packet is immediately forwarded to the target computer. Simultaneously, the packet and other data in the transmission are scanned for malware by an antivirus engine. If malware is identified in the transmission, the target computer is notified that the transmission contains malware.

  • Patent number: 7840649
Abstract: A method and device for setting up a virtual electronic teaching system with individual interactive communication is proposed. Various methods and devices for carrying out tele-teaching or e-learning sessions have been previously suggested. These methods and devices are improved in such a manner that work stations that can be freely interlinked and individual interactive communication can be set up at low cost. Towards this end, a telecommunication network is used that comprises a main distribution frame linked with an exchange (VST). An access multiplexer and/or a splitter are connected to the main distribution frame or are integrated into the main distribution frame. analog or digital telecommunication systems (TE) are connected via an interface circuit (SS). When the connection is set up, at the transmitter end, the kind of connection available to the interface circuit (SS) is determined.

  • Patent number: 7836210
Abstract: In order that a loop does not occur when switching upstream terminal apparatus, to provide an information distribution system capable of preemptively detecting a distribution route loop, and avoiding the loop, a terminal apparatus and a program used in the same system, as well as a loop connection avoidance method. A terminal apparatus B which has received loop connection detection information from upstream determines whether or not a downstream terminal apparatus of a control path which is not a distribution route along which contents information is flowing, and a source of the loop connection detection information match and, in the event that they match, determines that a loop will occur. By this means, it is possible to determine in advance that a loop will occur, before switching an upstream connection destination.

  • Patent number: 7827287
Abstract: A system and method for identifying a communication connection with an interim identifier prior to recognition of an original or previous identifier received via the connection. A first server or server process receives a service request (e.g., for an application, a web page or other data), and associates an original identifier with the request via one or more log entries. The request is forwarded to a second server or server process for additional or final processing. The second server associates an interim identifier with the communication connection established to receive the service request from the first server. The interim identifier is logged with one or more events associated with establishment of the connection and/or receipt and processing of the service request. When the original identifier is read and recognized, the interim identifier is bridged or mapped to the original identifier via a distinct log entry.

  • Patent number: RE41941
Abstract: An ACARS messaging system according to the invention is deployed when a TCP/IP subnetwork is available to the aircraft. ACARS messages are encoded into ASN.1 notation and translated to become compliant with the TCP/IP suite of protocols. A wireless subnetwork provides the initial access point to establish the TCP/IP datalink for the ACARS message traffic. The system allows transmission of ACARS messages using low cost and high bandwidth TCP/IP networks in lieu of the private networks that carry conventional ACARS messages.
