  • Patent number: 4072390
Abstract: An electrical connector for ribbon cable terminals has first and second longitudinally sets of conductor pins embedded in a block of insulating material. Each pin has a first end portion and a second end portion, the axes of which are in spaced parallel relationship, and a bent intermediate portion. On each side of the block a row of first end portions and a parallel spaced row of second end portions are defined. The intermediate portions on the pins of one set respectively cross the intermediate portions of the other set in the block without making contact. The connector is adapted to interconnect the terminals for diagnostic purposes, including Alpha continuity checks, as well as permitting connection of series or cascades of such terminals without the need for modifying cable terminations.

  • Patent number: 4072299
Abstract: The improvement in method and apparatus for basic oxygen steel making employing the off-gas principle for pre-heating purposes. This improvement involves the directing of the off-gas from a first furnace during refining to a second furnace, and burning said off-gas within the second furnace efficiently in order to preheat scrap and/or iron pellets in order to decrease the charge of molten pig iron and increase the solid charge. At the conclusion of the refining portion of the cycle, said first furnace is emptied of its steel and the cold charge is introduced into it while molten pig iron is charged into said second furnace on top of the pre-heated scrap. The cycle is then reversed by refining in said second furnace and directing said off-gas to said first furnace where it is mixed with oxygen or air and burnt within it to provide energy for the pre-heat. The method and apparatus provide for the protection of the lining and gives consideration to maintenance and pollution control.

  • Patent number: 4066323
Abstract: A terminal block is secured in position in an opening in a sheet-metal panel, with terminal screws extending at a small angle to the panel. Screw-driver thrust against the screws is resisted by engagement of the body of the terminal block against an edge of the opening. Resilient detents for holding the terminal block assembled to the panel are at the sides of the terminal block and are not affected by screw-driver thrust. The terminal block is locked to the panel along one edge of the opening by hooks extending from barriers between the circuit connectors. A circuit coding strip is carried by these hooks, useful in preliminary wiring and after the block is mounted on the panel. One illustrative terminal block has plug-in contacts that are engaged by companion plug-in contacts of a plug-in unit.

  • Patent number: 4064611
Abstract: Thin rectangular metal cups are press fitted into a row of rectangular holes in one and in another metal jigging strip. The patterns of holes in the two strips are identical. A small quantity of a conductive resin is dispensed into the cups of one strip and the cathode ends of a plurality of solid electrolyte capacitor bodies are pushed, preferably simultaneously, into the cups of this strip. A bonding resin is dispensed into the cups of the other strip and the anode ends of the capacitor bodies are pushed into the cups of this other strip. Near perfect registration and alignment of the two terminal cups of each capacitor body is achieved and the cost of terminating may be reduced in this disciplined and automatable method. These advantages are of greatest significance in terminating very small capacitors.

  • Patent number: 4065111
Abstract: A cover for the ignition frame of a sintering apparatus is disclosed wherein the cover includes an enclosed space through which combustion air for the substantially horizontally disposed burners of the sintering apparatus is conducted. Combustion air delivered from a blower flows via a pipe to a central portion of the cover and into the enclosed space where it is preheated and cools the cover and thence flows to insulated pipes connected with the burners. In an alternate embodiment, two enclosed spaces are formed in the cover arranged in the direction of travel of a conveyor belt carrying the product to be sintered. The space arranged in the downstream direction of travel of the belt is provided with burners and the upstream space is provided with combustion air pipes.

  • Patent number: 4064621
Abstract: A higher power infrared Pb.sub.1-x Sn.sub.x Te diode laser that is tunable at this high output power at all wavelengths from 6.5 - 32 microns, particularly 6.5 - 9 microns. The diode laser has a P-type laser cavity with a degenerate carrier concentration. A low carrier concentration N-type region is adjacent the P-type region. The N-type region has unique characteristics inherent to a cadmium diffusion from an external source at a temperature of about 350.degree. - 500.degree. C. The cadmium diffusion N-type region forms a flat PN junction with the P-type laser cavity. Dislocation density in the monocrystal forming the completed laser body, even after the cadmium diffusion, is not noticeably higher than in the monocrystal from which the laser is made. A method of forming such a laser, using a short time, low temperature cadmium diffusion process, is claimed.
