Abstract: A method of making a crankshaft involves positioning a serpentine-shaped tube in a casting mold with a plurality of removable (breakaway) portions of the tube spaced apart along the length thereof supported in the mold body and a plurality of oil line-forming portions of the tube between the removable portions bridging across a crankshaft-shaped mold cavity formed in the mold. Molten metal is cast into the mold cavity about the oil line-forming portions of the tube to form a cast crankshaft with the oil line-forming portions of the tube cast in-situ therein and the removable portions of the tube disposed externally of the cast crankshaft. After separating the cast crankshaft and the mold, the removable portions of the tube are severed from the cast crankshaft, preferably broken off from the cast crankshaft at scored locations on the serpentine-shaped tube, to leave a plurality of open-ended, tubular oil lines cast in-situ in the crankshaft.
Abstract: A method for the manufacture of a closed plastic pump rotor is described. The mold comprises two outer casting mold shells and an intermediate core, whose shaping determines the shape of the guide vanes and flow channels of the rotor. The core is made from a material, whose melting point is below that of the plastic to be cast. The core is melted following the curing of the plastic.
Abstract: A header for an automotive air conditioner evaporator is made from a cut-off length of a cylindrical aluminum tube (10), one end of which is clamped on a cylindrical arbor (11) so that a header region (20) of the tube can be pressed into a generally rectangular shape in a channel-shaped forming tool (15). While confined within the forming tool, a forming arbor (25) having a generally rectangular cross-sectional shape is pressed into header region (20) to conform the header region to the shape of forming arbor (25) and the confines of forming tool (15).
Abstract: An automatic covered wire cutting and stripping method and an apparatus used for the method. The method comprises the steps of transferring a covered wire by a transfer mechanism toward a cutting mechanism disposed opposite to the transfer mechanism so as to protrude the covered wire from the cutting mechanism by a specified length in the direction away from the transfer mechanism, cutting a cover of the covered wire by the cutting mechanism to prepare the specified length of a cover part to be stripped, transferring the covered wire toward the transfer mechanism, gripping the cover part to be stripped off the covered wire by a grip mechanism, and transferring the covered wire toward the transfer mechanism such that the cover part to be stripped off the covered wire is gripped by the grip mechanism thereby stripping the specified length of the cover from the covered wire.
Abstract: A compliant S-shaped lead for resiliently supporting an integrated circuit chip package in spaced relation generally parallel to a printed circuit board. The S-lead bends and twists to absorb forces which would otherwise be exerted on solder joints due to temperature cycling and vibration. The symmetrical S-lead self-centers on both the package and PC board to provide minimum stress. The leads are held by a support strip for connection to the chip carrier. Thereafter, the support strip is removed and the carrier positions the leads for connection to the circuit board.

Abstract: A static, flow-conditioner apparatus comprising a series of closely spaced shearing edges which contact and condition liquid flowing thereby. The edges are advantageously carried on propellor-shaped articles and mounted on an axial shaft in conduit forming a confined liquid flow space. It is advantageous to modify flow patterns by changes in edge configuration and flow patterns within spaces between closely packed group of the shearing edge-bearing members. Particularly, utility is found in reducing the asphaltene "particles" or "globules" in heavy fuel oil to extremely small size so they are readily burned in a boiler with reduced particulates in the stack effluent.
Abstract: A variable-volume turbocharger device comprises at least two exhaust gas passages (A), (B) different in the flow characteristics, divided by a partition wall (20) provided in a turbine housing (18), and two valve members (34a), (34b) which are actuated so as to open and shut the exhaust gas passages (A), (B). The valve members (34a), (34b) each are actuated to open and shut in response to the speed and load of an engine or the likes, whereby either one of the exhaust gas passages (A), (B) or both of them are opened to provide at least three turbine flow characteristics. An exhaust gas turbine (12) can be thereby operated with remarkably good efficiency suitably to the operating state of the engine.
Abstract: A method for fabricating an electrical energy distribution system as a track having a multitude of parallel insulating strips and interspersed conductor bars with gaps between adjacent conductor bars to receive conductive blades of outlets or jumper cables for receiving power from the system as well as fixedly supporting a set of blades for power input to the system. During fabrication, the elongated insulating strips and conductor bars are passed through at least two spaced apart transverse multi-apertured separators so that the conductor bars define therebetween blade receiving gaps. As thus fabricated, the system is modular and may be assembled without the need of tools or specially trained electricians.
Abstract: Fabrication of an electronic circuit board is carried out by forming a predetermined number of resistors having various resistances based on a circuit design stored in a memory on a nonconductive substrate and dividing the nonconductive substrate into discrete resistors, then mounting the discrete resistors on a circuit board and testing operation characteristic thereof; and when some resistors having resistances which are not suitable to obtain a predetermined operation characteristic exist in the above-formed resistors, the resistances are corrected, and electronic circuit board having corrected accurate electric constants is obtained; and thereby a complete electronic circuit boards are fabricated by repetition of above-mentioned respective steps.

Abstract: Method for stabilizing a glide shoe loaded against an inner face of a revolving mantle of a roll adjustable in zones. The glide shoe is supported by an articulated joint on a piston which loads the glide shoe with adjustable pressure. In order to ensure lubrication of the glide face between the glide shoe and the inner face of the roll mantle, within an area of a front edge of the glide face as seen in a direction of rotation of the roll mantle, a shifting and/or steepening of compression pressure applied by the glide shoe through lubricant onto the inner face of the roll mantle is produced by means of a wedge space within the front edge of the glide face, said shifting and/or steepening in turn generating a moment having a direction opposite to a direction of a moment produced by frictional force of the glide face of the shoe. The thickness of the lubricant film is increased by this moment in the area of the front side of the glide face.

Abstract: A method of salvaging stationary blades of a steam turbine cylinder includes tack welding abutting stationary blade platforms, cutting stationary blade roots out of the steam turbine cylinder, machining a side of the root and platform for each stationary blade to reduce thickness along the side and mounting the stationary blades in a new cylinder having mounting grooves for each row of stationary blades. Each mounting groove has an annular recess formed in a sidewall thereof and the cylinder has a sloping surface which faces a machined area of the root and platform of the stationary blades. The space between the sloped surface and the machined area provides access for a piece of caulking material and a caulking tool, whereby the caulking material is deformed to make a key connection between the cylinder and the stationary blade roots.
Abstract: The mounting locations for .[.separable.]. insertion of components on a printed circuit board are indicated by a projected luminous .[.spot which is moved sequentially and repeatedly between the several mounting spots for each component. The direction of movement of the luminous dot is changed in each mounting spot..]. dot which moves from one mounting spot to the next to indicate the array of mounting spots forming the mounting location. The movement is cyclically repeated in the same sequence to indicate to the installer the mounting location. Thereafter the luminous dot is moved to the next mounting location and the same cyclical and sequential scanning is repeated. The spot travels over the board in response to an element of the optical system in the projector being moved in a plane parallel to the board surface under control of a programmed unit.
