  • Patent number: 4819329
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a multiwire lead assembly for a flexible connector between thin film elements and other electronic circuitry during manufacturing thin film heads for computer disc drives includes the process of supporting the multiple wires in spaced locations on retainers, such as terminal boards, and fixing the wires to such terminal boards. The terminal boards are spaced apart a desired distance for making the lead assembly. The wires are separated from the source reel and then the two terminal boards are a supported assembly and the center portions of the multiple wires are twisted together while the end portions are held separated and oriented by the terminal boards. The twisted wire portion of the wires then can be insulated at desired locations, including for example the full length of the twisted portion. The ends of the wires are stipped of their normal insulating coating utilizing a laser stripper in a known manner.

  • Patent number: 4817878
Abstract: Power lock tool retention apparatus for a food processor includes at least one flattened section on the drive shaft with an associated horizontal notch. A socket extending downwardly on the inside of the rotary tool hub is placed onto this drive shaft during manual installation of the tool so that rotation of the shaft will cause the tool to be rotated. At least one horizontal lip is provided in the socket at an elevation to become aligned with the notch on the drive shaft when the hub has been slid down vertically into its operating position on the shaft. The socket configuration is complementary to, but slightly different from, the flattened configuration of the drive shaft in order to permit a small amount of relative angular movement between the shaft and hub when the shaft commences to rotate.

  • Patent number: 4815183
Abstract: In a controlled deflection roll, hydrostatic support elements are used which can be tilted to an increased extent only in the axial direction but not in the circumferential direction of the roll shell. Deflection or bending of the stationary support member, on which the roll shell is supported by the hydrostatic support elements is compensated by the axial tilting capacity of such hydrostatic support elements. The transverse forces occurring during operation of the controlled deflection roll are automatically compensated by the supporting directions or direction of action of at least outer bearing pockets of the hydrostatic support elements and which form a predeterminate angle with the pressing direction, so that force components directed in the circumferential direction are formed which substantially counteract the prevailing transverse force.

  • Patent number: 4815199
Abstract: A thermal imaging device is manufactured by providing electrodes on opposite sides of a slab of ferroelectric or pyroelectric material. A sheet of electrically and thermally insulating material is bonded to the signal electrode layer on one side of the slab. An electrically conductive layer is provided on the insulating sheet. An array of spaced bores is then formed. Each bore extends through the electrically conductive layer down to the signal layer. The bores are then coated with electrically conductive material to electrically connect the signal electrode layer to the electrically conductive layer. Thereafter, a pattern of channels is formed surrounding the bores. The channels extend through the electrically conductive layer down to the slab, so as to form separate pillars of insulating material from the insulating sheet, and separate signal electrodes from the signal layer. Finally, the electrically conductive coated bores are connected to a circuit substrate by way of solder bumps.

  • Patent number: 4811481
Abstract: An improved method of beading deformable electrodes is provided which method comprises forming a plurality of spaced depressions, preferably simultaneously, as through the use of a novel beading tool, in at least one surface of a deformable electrode and then adhesively binding nonconductive beads in said depressions so as to collectively form a nonconductive separator on said surface. The method is applicable for use with metallic electrodes such as sintered silver or nickel or cadmium plaque electrodes, the surfaces of which are not subject to easy plastic flow at relatively low pressure, in contrast to silver chloride plates. Preferably the depressions are hemispherical and the beads are spherical so that a substantial portion of each bead extends outwardly from the beaded electrode surface. The dimpling can be carried out effectively through the use of an improved novel tool which comprises a flat plate having a plurality of spaced apertures extending from the top to the bottom thereof at about a 90.

  • Patent number: 4807355
Abstract: Slow-wave structures are formed by the method of this invention in the form of helical or coupled-cavity structures. A helical waveguide form of slow-wave structure is formed of a solid rod of copper machined with a deep, narrow helical groove. A copper sleeve is brazed to the periphery of the resulting helical thread to form a helically spiraling pathway about a solid axially centered and axially extending center portion. The center portion is then totally eroded away to form a slow wave structure having a helical radially-extending portion, or if only partially eroded with an inner helical axially-extending ridge to provide a helical axially-centered gap between adjacent ridges. The coupled-cavity forms of waveguide slow-wave structures are formed by machining disks from a solid rod of copper. The disks are supported in their desired positions by an axial retained portion of the rod until the disks are brazed inside a cylindrical shell of copper.

  • Patent number: 4803763
Abstract: A laminated piezoelectric transducer, comprising a laminate of a plurality of piezoelectric plates with paste electrodes inserted therebetween and bonding the plates together. Rows of metal extrusions are made by electroless plating onto the paste electrodes on the peripheral outer surface of the laminate. Each row of the metal extrusions is formed onto and electrically connected to alternate paste electrodes so that by electrically connecting each row of the metal extrusions, the laminate of the piezoelectric plates is electrically connected in parallel. This laminated piezoelectric transducer allows the formation of the paste electrodes on the entire or at least substantially the entire main surfaces of the piezoelectric plates, and eliminates the need for the usual metal plate electrodes inserted between the piezoelectric plates.

  • Patent number: 4801099
Abstract: Combined hydrostatic/hydrodynamic bearing system for a grinding apparatus in which the material is ground in a grinding space defined between a pair of relatively rotating grinding members and in which at least one of the grinding members is carried by an axially displaceable rotatable shaft. One or more cylindrical pistons are mounted on the rotatable shaft to rotate therewith within a pressure chamber defined within a stationary cylindrical housing permitting the piston or pistons to be displaced axially therein. Fluctuations in axial thrust forces acting on the displaceable rotatable shaft are counteracted by applying a fluid pressure medium to one or both of the piston ends of the cylindrical piston or pistons in a controlled manner so as to maintain a predetermined clearance range of the grinding space.

  • Patent number: 4799303
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a valve sleeve including the steps of providing a tubular member having a plurality of grooves extending axially along an inner surface of the tubular member through a pair of axially opposite end surfaces of the tubular member. The end surfaces extend radially outward from an inner surface of the tubular member to an outer surface. Each of the axially extending grooves have a base surface located between the inner and outer surfaces. The method also includes forcefully abutting a first punch against at least one of the end surfaces between the base surface of each groove and the outer surface to displace material of the end surface adjacent each groove radially inwardly of the inner surface. The method also includes then forcefully abutting a second punch against the displaced material of the end surface which extends radially inwardly of the inner surface and moving a portion of the displaced material axially and radially outwardly to form a seal land at an end of each groove.
