Abstract: This invention relates to stable, fluid magnesium-containing dispersions and the preparations thereof by the high temperature decomposition of Magnesium salts of carboxylic acids to MgO in a dispersant-containing fluid, where less than a stoichiometric amount of carboxylic acid is employed in forming the magnesium carboxylates, based on Mg(OH).sub.2 or equivalent.
Abstract: A synergistic extreme-pressure lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity having dispersed therein: (1) 0.1-60 weight percent of hydrated potassium borate microparticles having a boron to potassium ratio of about 2.5 to 4.5, (2) from 0.01 to 5.0 weight percent of an antiwear agent selected from (a) a zinc dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate having from 4 to 20 carbons in each hydrocarbyl group; (b) a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 amine salt of a dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphoric acid having from 4 to 20 carbons in each hydrocarbyl group; (c) a zinc alkyl aryl sulfonate; or (d) mixtures thereof, and (3) from 0.1 to 5 weight percent of an oil-soluble antioxidant organic sulfur compound containing from 3 to 40 weight percent sulfur, which sulfur is present as organic sulfide or polysulfide or mixtures thereof.
Abstract: Metallo-organic compositions soluble in oils and hydrocarbon solvents, of a high transitional metal content and highly overbased character, are prepared from sources of transitional metals (or of transitional in conjunction with nontransitional metals) reacted with mixed organic acids comprising at least one monocarboxylic acid and a second acid, either a sulfonic acid or a different molecular weight monocarboxylic acid. Formation of the complexes requires the use of excesses of metal over acids, and the use of an oxygen-supplying material such as air, regardless of whether the metal source be a free metal, an oxide or a hydroxide. Alkoxyalkanols or glycols may be used in addition to the required acids.
Abstract: Oil compositions useful as lubricants and multigraded between SAE 75W and SAE 250 can be made by combining (A) about 95 to about 30 weight percent of a base oil consisting of an oil having a viscosity of about 40 to 2000 SUS at 100.degree. F., (B) an extreme pressure improving amount of at least one extreme pressure agent, and (C) about 5 to about 70 weight percent of at least one oil-soluble polymer, said polymer being exemplified by a hydrogenated interpolymer of a monovinyl arene and at least one C.sub.4-6 conjugated diene or at least one C.sub.2-6 alpha-olefin.
Abstract: An injectable packing formulation comprising particulate flexible graphite and a suitable liquid lubricant. Such formulation can be used to pack the stuffing box assembly of any pump, valve, expansion joint, or like structure, and is particularly useful at temperatures in excess of 500.degree. F. where other packing materials do not perform satisfactorily. While stuffing boxes filled with conventional injectable packing formulations require frequent re-packing in order to maintain a seal when operated at elevated temperatures, stuffing boxes packed with the packing formulation of the present invention require little or no maintenance even when operated at highly elevated temperatures.
Abstract: The heavy reaction product obtained upon separation, as by distillation, of light reaction products of branched aliphatic dinitriles is useful as rust inhibitor in lubricating oils and greases.
Abstract: Grease compositions comprising a silicone fluid and a thickening amount of a poly(metal phosphinate) containing at least one XP(R) (H)X group, where X is oxygen or sulfur and R is alkyl or aryl.

Abstract: A lubricating oil additive composition which imparts improved oxidation properties to crankcase lubricants comprises a antioxidant selected from aromatic and alkyl sulfides and polysulfides, sulfurized olefins, sulfurized carboxylic acid esters and sulfurized ester-olefins, and a secondary amine of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R and R' are aliphatic radicals. Lubricating oil compositions containing this additive composition are also disclosed.
Abstract: Graft copolymers wherein the backbone polymer is a polymeric hydrocarbon such as ethylene/propylene copolymer and the grafted units are the residues of an addition copolymerizable monomer system comprising an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid or anhydride and at least one other addition monomer. Preferably, the monomer residues are post-reacted with an alcohol or an amino alcohol. The graft copolymers are prepared with a free radical initiator which is blended with the reactants at a temperature below the initiator decomposition temperature, followed by heating to the decomposition temperature. The graft copolymers impart combined detergent, viscosity index improvement and other useful properties to lubricating oils and hydrocarbon motor fuels.

Abstract: A water emulsifiable lubricant and coolant for the cold forming of metal, as in the forming and stamping of sheet metal parts and in the drawing of wire. The composition has superior lubricant and coolant properties and also imparts some degree of corrosion protection for the part after forming. The composition contains oleic acid, an ethanolamine, a mixture of mineral oils or a mixture of mineral oil with a wax, and a mixture of emulsifiers. The emulsion is stable at various strengths and at pH values ranging from 7.0 to 9.5, thus being useful with various plated or coated metals, as well as with uncoated metals. An example of the lubricant is as follows:Lubricant(a) water base(b) oleic acid(c) ethanolamine(d) heavy mineral oil(e) dialkylphenoxypoly (ethyleneoxy) ethanol(f) sodium salt of alkylpolyoxyethylene phosphate ester, and(g) a member selected from the group consisting of light mineral oil, paraffin wax, oxazoline wax.
Abstract: Graft copolymers wherein the backbone polymer is a polymeric hydrocarbon such as ethylene/propylene copolymer and the grafted units are the residues of a monomer system comprising maleic acid or anhydride and one or more other monomers copolymerizable therewith, the monomer system being post-reacted with a polyamine compound. The graft copolymers impart combined detergent, viscosity index improvement and other useful properties to lubricating oils and hydrocarbon motor fuels.

Abstract: A lubricating grease composition is provided having improved salt water corrosion resistance and comprising a lithium complex grease thickener, a metal naphthenate and a quaternary ammonium salt.
Abstract: Compositions suitable for use as forging lubricants, especially for hot forging, comprises an aliphatic or alicyclic organic diluent (preferably one which has a high flash point and a relatively high boiling point), graphite and non-Newtonian basic alkaline earth metal complex. The complex is preferably a grease-like or gel-like basic calcium or magnesium sulfonate or carboxylate, or mixture thereof. Basic magnesium sulfonate-carboxylates are especially preferred. These lubricants, when used in hot forging operations, are characterized by their ability to protect the forging die from welding, scoring or other deformation and by their relatively smokeless properties.
