Abstract: An improvement in a regenerator which incorporates an external plenum on the exterior of the regenerator apparatus for receiving and collecting the flue gases separated from regenerated catalyst by a plurality of cyclone separators or other separating apparatus is disclosed. The external plenum communicates by means of stand pipes through the wall of the regenerator. This supports the cyclone separators or other separating means mechanically and avoids certain thermal stresses which would otherwise occur in the plenum if it were placed on the interior of the regeneration chamber.
Abstract: An enclosure in the form of a shed is disposed to extend along the entire length of the battery of ovens at the coke discharge side thereof. The shed roof rises from the top of the ovens to a shed wall spaced outwardly from the ovens beyond a track for a quench car. The shed wall essentially supports the weight of the shed roof in a cantilever fashion. Within the shed a baffle plate, carried by the shed wall, extends in an upward direction toward the battery of coke ovens. A conveyor is carried by the shed wall along its length for conveying solid particles of coke dropping from the baffle plate onto the conveyor. The shed further includes a pipe for extracting smoke within the shed which occurs when hot coke is pressed out of an oven chamber. The smoke extraction pipe is carried in one embodiment by the shed roof vertically above the baffle plate, in a second embodiment, by the shed wall above the upper end of the baffle plate and in a third embodiment by the shed wall at the lower end of the baffle plate.
Abstract: Phosphorous acid is produced from PCl.sub.3 and water in an apparatus, the essential parts of which include a reactor and an evaporator, which are connected together by means of a conduit running from the bottom of the reactor to the head of the evaporator. The evaporator communicates with the lower end of a separator of which the upstream end terminates in an off-gas outlet. More particularly, the downstream end of the evaporator is connected to a stripping column which is provided with an off-gas outlet opening into the off-gas outlet associated with the evaporator.
Abstract: A high temperature reactor comprises a tube which defines a reactor chamber; means for introducing the inert fluid into the reactor tube to provide a protective blanket for the inside surface of the tube; means for introducing reactants into the chamber, the reactants being confined centrally within the chamber by the protective blanket; and, means, for generating high intensity radiant energy which is directed into the chamber to coincide with at least a portion of the path of the reactants.
Abstract: A method of crystal growth is provided that comprises the steps of positioning a foraminous susceptor above and adjacent to a seed crystal and below and in contact with a column of crystal feed material; inductively heating the susceptor so as to melt the top of the seed crystal and a layer of the column adjacent the susceptor; passing crystal feed material melt through openings in the susceptor into contact with the seed crystal, thereby commencing crystal growth; lowering the column toward the heated susceptor, thereby melting the end of the column; and passing the resulting melt through openings in the susceptor to provide material for continued crystal growth.

Abstract: A reactor for the catalytic synthesis of ammonia at high temperature and pressure from nitrogen and hydrogen wherein the intertubular spaces of the heat exchange zone are filled with metallic balls; the tubular spaces contain metal bars with square cross section; triple concentric tubes are present in the preheating and reaction zone to reach optimal temperature conditions; a demister is provided for the retention of oil at the entrance of the synthesis gas into the intertubular spaces of the heat-exchange zone; and a bag-shaped distribution chamber is provided between the reaction and preheating zone and the heat exchange zone.
Abstract: Burner apparatus in which fuel and airborne combustible debris to be incinerated are received in a burner while fuel delivered to the burner is decreased in quantity in the absence of debris to be incinerated so that delivery of excess fuel in the absence of debris is avoided.
Abstract: An upright generally cylindrical casing forms a gas passageway communicating with the exhaust of a flue for receiving its heated exhaust gases. A burner, axially mounted below the casing in the heated gas stream, heats the gases and refractory material contained by the casing to a combustion temperature. Baffles in the casing direct the heated gases toward refractory vanes contained by the casing. Additional air is admitted to the depending end of the casing to support combustion of unburned hydrocarbons.
Abstract: Fluidized bed desubliming apparatus for directly desubliming gaseous aluminum chloride to solid form in a fluidized bed of solid particles of aluminum chloride in a chamber at controlled temperatures for production of selectively constituted solid particulate aluminum chloride, for example including cooling means within the bed for maintaining such controlled temperatures, means for introducing such gaseous aluminum chloride into the bed remote from all contact surfaces within the chamber which are below the ambient desublimation temperature, gas distribution inlet means, residual gaseous effluent outlet means and means for withdrawing aluminum chloride particles from the bed.

Abstract: Apparatus for purifying an air or gas flow of combustible vaporous or gaseous impurities by passing the air or gas through an adsorption filter and charging the filter to a predetermined level. After the filter is so charged, the air or gas flow is interrupted and the filter is desorbed by passing a heated inert gas generated by stoichiometric burning of hydrocarbons through the filter.
