  • Patent number: 4655980
Abstract: A process for preparing collagen membranes useful in tissue repair, and wound healing and related membranous implant materials useful in both hard and soft tissue applications is disclosed. The resulting membranes and materials have properties which can be varied as desired to suit intended use. Variation results from altering the precise conditions of formation of the membrane or of related fibers and solids. The process comprises first forming a gel from solubilized collagen, followed by converting the gel into a one-, two- or three-dimensional membranous solid form. This conversion is performed either by applying pressure to the gel, or by disrupting the gel and separating the resulting precipitate for casting.

  • Patent number: 4654075
Abstract: Water soluble precursors of ceramic compounds are emulsified in an organic fluid that is subsequently heated to remove the free water from the emulsion droplets and further heated in a partial oxygen atmosphere to form a char. The carbon in the char maintains the separation between the dried droplet-derived particles. This char may then be heated in air to oxidize and remove the carbon, to calcine the ceramic, and to controllably produce a fine powder of spherical particles having a narrow size distribution.

  • Patent number: 4650628
Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for straightening a parison tube (58b) in an apparatus of the type in which thermoplastic tubing (48) is extruded into open halves (24 and 26) of a blow mold (22) and a parison tube (58b) is severed from the thermoplastic tube (48) concurrently with the blow mold being rotated around an axis (28). The present invention orients the curvature of the parison (58b) in a predetermined plane (52) by accelerating the parison tube (58b) transversely to the axis (90) of the parison tube (58b); and then the parison tube (58b) is straightened by applying jets of air (76) against the neck and moil portion (68) of the parison tube (58b), thereby straightening the parison tube (58b), and thereby preventing the neck and moil portion (68) of the parison tube (58b) from being pinched between the mold halves (24 and 26) in the area of the neck and moil cavity (38).

  • Patent number: 4650618
Abstract: Juxtaposed nozzle openings apply the same or different melts to the surface of a moving cooler surface for producing thin metal strips or foils with a considerable width. The nozzle openings can be staggered in the direction of movement of the cooler surface and apply different materials to produce a metal strip with juxtaposed and sharply defined regions with different characteristics. Amorphous or mixed amorphous/-crystalline, or solely crystalline material structures can also be produced. Alternatively, different cooling capacities on different cooler surface areas and different structuring of different cooler surface areas permit the melt to solidify on the cooler surface such that the strips or foils obtained have adjacent regions with different metallic and/or geometrical structures. By geometrical configuration of the cooler surface, foils with a structured surface or with shape-limited individual regions can be used for mass production of small parts from sheet or strip material.

  • Patent number: 4650622
Abstract: The ceramic article, after molding and while in a porous condition, is surface hardened not by being placed in a kiln and exposed to high temperatures, but is operatively arranged to have a combustible gas-air mixture pumped under appropriate pressure through the porosity of its molded shape. The exiting gas-air mixture is, according to the present invention, ignited, and this causes the exterior surface of the molded shape to incandesce, with the result that the external surface hardens without causing internal stresses within the article, and also avoids causing differential thermal expansion between the exterior surface and the fiber substance of the article adjacent thereto.

  • Patent number: 4649004
Abstract: A process for the production of a multi-layer pipe to be used for formation of a bottle by drawblow-forming, comprising forming by co-extrusion a pipe having inner and outer layers of a polyester composed mainly of ethylene terephthalate units and an intermediate layer of an oxygen-barrier resin interposed between the inner and outer layers. An adhesive resin layer is preferable interposed between every two adjacent layers. The co-extruded multi-layer pipe is sized in the molten state so that the diameter of the pipe is uniform. The process continues by cooling the outer portion of the molten multi-layer pipe by contact with water and simultaneously introducing an inert gas or an inert gas containing a water mist into the interior of the pipe to thereby cool the inner portion of the pipe and prevent oxidation in the pipe. A multi-layer pipe prepared according to this process is excellent in the transparency and the draw-formability into a multi-layer drawn bottle.
