  • Patent number: 5696201
Abstract: A process which permits the production of mouldings which have little odor and comprise fibrous semifinished products to which heat-curing novolak resins have been added and which are suitable for lining heat-emitting and/or sound-emitting vehicle parts, in which their binders are completely and uniformly crosslinked. The odor emission, in particular the formaldehyde emission, is thus reduced. This process furthermore permits the production of products having an unusually large layer thickness. The homogeneous polymerisation reaction is achieved by the use of a hot fluid in the form of a dry, saturated steam and under elevated pressure.

  • Patent number: 5693693
Abstract: Wax based invisible inks have been discovered that emit light at various wavelengths in the visible region when they are excited by UV light. This allows lower layer clear text information to be written on an object with a regular, visible ink and an upper layer bar code to be written over the lower layer text information with an ink that is invisible to the naked eye. This allows the lower layer text information and upper layer bar code to contain more information than conventional bar codes. These inks allow printing and decoding invisible bar codes over printed information with visible inks. The detection by fluorescence of these invisible inks provides a high signal to noise ratio and no interference with the visible printed information.

  • Patent number: 5691391
Abstract: A variable pitch fan for a helicopter equipped with a NOTAR.RTM. mechanical antitorque directional control system comprises a plurality of blade assemblies. Each blade assembly includes a blade portion, which is molded from a blended material which includes fiber reinforced polypropylene. A key to the invention is the use of long fibers, having a length of at least approximately one-half inch, for reinforcement, the long fibers providing for about twice the pull-out strength of short or chopped fibers. Another key aspect of the invention is the use of a blowing agent in the blended material, which serves to reduce weight and warpage by creating a foamed structure having a variable density, the structure retaining considerable strength because of the fiber reinforcement. The blade portion is molded about a spar which has holes therethrough, the holes providing a mechanical interlock between the blade and the spar.

  • Patent number: 5684083
Abstract: A composition is disclosed which includes a urethane resin containing reactive ethylenically unsaturated groups and hydroxyl groups, which is preferably derived by reacting a polyisocyanate and an isocyanate reactive group-containing unsaturated monomer selected from the group consisting of hydroxyalkyl acrylates, hydroxyalkyl methacrylates, hydroxyalkyl acrylamides, hydroxy functional allylic compounds, and mixtures thereof to form an isocyanate group-containing reaction product which is then reacted with an organic polyol wherein the equivalent number of hydroxyl groups is in excess compared with the equivalent number of isocyanate groups. The composition also includes an aminoplast resin for reaction with hydroxyl groups on the urethane resin in an amount of less than about 10% by weight based on solids of the composition which is effective in thin film curing of the composition.

  • Patent number: 5681882
Abstract: An anti-icing fluid suitable for ground treatment of aircraft, being a glycol-based, aqueous solution containing a hydrophobe-bearing, macromonomer-containing polymer thickener in an amount of less than about 5 weight %. Thickening occurs predominantly by association among hydrophobe groups. Thickening may be enhanced by addition of a surfactant or other materials which act as co-thickeners. Use of this thickened fluid does not adversely affect airfoil lift characteristics during takeoff, because the fluid exhibits shear thinning and readily flows off the aircraft surfaces when exposed to wind shear during the aircraft's takeoff run.
