  • Patent number: 4797006
Abstract: In a pyrometer system, a pyrometer provides output signals to a processor indicative of the temperature of rotating blades in a gas-turbine engine. The processor includes a synchronization unit and a gate controlled by the synchronization unit. After monitoring the output of the pyrometer to identify which parts of the output signal arise from radiation from the blades and which arise from the combustion chamber, the synchronization unit is set in synchronism with the blade signals and the gate is controlled to pass signals from the blade and to interrupt signals arising from the combustion chamber. The output of the processor is thereby indicative of blade temperature and is insensitive to combustion chamber radiation.

  • Patent number: 4796414
Abstract: A grooved cylindrical core or rod is conveyed in a state of elastic elongation, giving it excess length, through a distributing device and a die-plate. Optical fibers are each fitted in a respective groove of the rod at the entry of the die-plate. Downstream from the die-plate, the rod provided with the fibers passes through a zone in which there is a powerful electric field created by a ionization bar. Under the influence of the ionization, the fibers cling to the walls or bottoms of the grooves. This provides the drag necessary for stretching the fibers when they approach the rod.

  • Patent number: 4796422
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for treating tail yarns in textile spindle assemblies of textile spinning machines, twisters or the like, wherein a stationary upper slit ring and an axially slidable lower slit ring are mounted on a base portion of a spindle to form a tail yarn gripping means. The pressed state of the tail yarn gripping means is released by sliding the lower slit ring downward by rotational centrifugal force. The tail yarn can be securely fixed to the tail yarn gripping means and the yarn underwindings can be automatically removed from the tail yarn gripping means during the operation of the machine. When a flange of the upper slit ring is perforated with a plurality of yarn passing openings, the tail yarn released from the means for holding the yarn underwindings is retained by this yarn passing opening, which prevents adverse effects to the traveler in the early stage of winding, resulting in prevention of the occurrence of yarn breakage or the deterioration of yarn properties.

  • Patent number: 4792076
Abstract: A web transporting apparatus wherein the web is trained over the external surface of a radially expandible elastic shell which is connected with two end walls to form a roll and to define an internal compartment which is filled with a pressurized hydraulic fluid. The pressure of hydraulic fluid is regulated in dependency upon the thickness of the web which is being transported so that the neutral zone of the web is invariably located at the same distance from the axis of the roll. The pressure of fluid in the compartmnt is regulatable by a hydropneumatic transducer wherein a hydraulic cylinder and piston unit admits pressurized hydraulic fluid into the compartment and the pressure of fluid in the hydraulic cylinder and piston unit is regulated by a pneumatic cylinder and piston unit which receives pressurized gaseous fluid by way of an adjusting valve. Regulation of the outer diameter of the shell compensates for variations in the thickness of the transported web.

  • Patent number: 4790136
Abstract: A glass fiber bulk strand roving that is made up of a multiplicity of strands, each of which is made up of a plurality of individual fibers, for example, 200 of such fibers. Each strand of the roving has a multiplicity of rather long, axially extending loops, for example, axially extending loops with a calculated length of at least 6 inches, and a multiplicity of shorter, unbroken, cross-axially extending loops that are formed in the axially extending loops of such strands. The axially extending loops and the cross-axially extending loops interengage and intertwine with one another for form a composite entangled structure. The roving of the present invention is made by a process that uses a finger wheel to form axially extending loops in strands and a co-axial spinner with an inlet that is positioned above or below the finger wheel.

  • Patent number: 4789008
Abstract: A creel which can deliver untwisted yarns from bobbins in a weaving machine while at a same time twisting them or else twisting some of such untwisted yarns in the S twist and the remaining untwisted yarns in the Z twist with relative low investment for equipments. The creel employs a mechanism similar to a ring twisting mechanism and includes a required number of spindles for rotating bobbins supported thereon, a ring secured in a concentrical relationship to each of the spindles, a traveler mounted for movement on each of the rings, and a driving device for driving the spindles to rotate in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction such that when the untwisted yarns are unwound from the bobbins via the travelers, a twist in the S or Z direction may be applied to the untwisted yarns at a same time.

  • Patent number: 4788817
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for stringing up or re-stringing a balanced ply-twisted combination yarn of two components to insure strong piecing-up points. The end of the combination yarn and the end of a continuous filament yarn, which becomes a component of the combination yarn, are both prepared for piecing and inserted into the rotor of an open-end spinning device. Upon start up, the combination yarn engages staple fibers in the rotor consolidating groove while the continuous filament yarn engages the combination yarn within the rotor without any contact of the continuous filament yarn with the rotor consolidating groove.

  • Patent number: 4783953
Abstract: A laying head for laying a tube containing an optical fiber onto the outer surface of an elongate support. An upstream end of the laying head provides an inlet for the support and a guide passage for guiding the tube into a chamber of the laying head. The chamber extends around the passline for an angular distance greater than that of the guide passage to allow lateral movement of the tube within the head. The tube passes from the chamber onto the surface of the support as the support exits the chamber. The chamber allows for lateral tube movement to enable the tube to be laid onto the support in spiral fashion with the tube causing the head to rotate around the support.
