  • Patent number: 4399680
Abstract: A pair of upper crossheads for a universal rolling mill is engaged with nut assemblies on extended ends of a pair of screwdown spindles. Each crosshead can be swung about a nut assembly on one of the screwdown spindles while disengaged from a nut assembly on the other screwdown spindle for pivotal movement of the crosshead to one side of the housing frame. The nut assemblies for the ends of the crossheads, which remain engaged with the screwdown spindles, have threads that raise the crossheads during pivotal movement. Pedestal supports on projecting wing portions of the frame carry the pivoted parts of the crossheads. During operation of the universal rolling mill, the upper crossheads are held in their operative position by a clamp engaged with a crosstie that extends between two nut assemblies that can be exposed.

  • Patent number: 4399607
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a recombinant lead acid battery includes placing two or more cell packs in a battery container and then loading the container into a frame mounted on a rotary capstan. The container is transferred to a moulding station and the plate straps and intercell connectors are moulded around the plate lugs. The container is then transferred to a coating station and the intercell connectors are dipped while still hot into a fluidized bed of epoxy resin particles. The particles adhere to the intercell connectors and are cured by their heat thereby forming an impervious layer around them. This layer acts as an electrolyte creepage barrier and prevents the surface of the intercell connectors acting as an electrolyte path for intercell ionic leakage.

  • Patent number: 4397169
Abstract: The amount of materials in a piece of tubular stock is measured before the stock enters a stretch-reducing rolling mill and the mill is so controlled that the finished tube can be cut into lengths without the occurrence of overlengths or underlengths. In the case of a seamless tube, the piece of tubular stock is weighed and the flying means which cut the finished tube are so controlled that the lengths of all the finished pieces lie within prescribed tolerances so that there is no waste, other than the usual cropped ends. In the case of welded tube, the thickness of the strip material from which the tube is made can be welded, and the welded tubular stock can be cut to a suitable length to ensure that no overlengths or underlengths are obtained after the stretch-reducing and cutting of the finished tube into pieces of prescribed length, within tolerance limits.

  • Patent number: 4395898
Abstract: An edge roller assembly has a fixed guide member on which a support block is displaceable in a predetermined adjustment direction so as to move an edge roller rotatable on the block about an axis transverse to this direction. A threaded pin spindle extends generally parallel to the direction and bears on the block and is threaded into a nut in an adjustment member. A pair of links each have an inner end pivoted on the guide member and an outer end pivoted by means of a respective eccentric pin on the adjustment member. Thus rotation of these pins can relatively displace the adjustment and guide members, so as to move the rollers carried by the support blocks toward one another even while engaging a workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4394822
Abstract: A high reduction method and apparatus for continuously hot rolling a product through a plurality of roll passes, wherein the distribution of horizontal forces in at least one roll pass other than the first is such that spontaneous entry is prevented by a maximum momentary opposing force which is greater than the available delivery force of the preceding roll pass. An additional force is exerted on the product in advance of the preceding roll pass. This additional force, when combined with the available delivery force of the preceding roll pass, is of sufficient magnitude to overcome the maximum momentary opposing force of the said one roll pass and thus achieve forced entry therein.

  • Patent number: 4392367
Abstract: Process and apparatus for the cold rolling of ferrous metal or nonferrous metal strip, e.g. steel or aluminum strip, in which the strip is passed at a high rate through a multiplicity of cold rolling stands and a coolant is dispensed from nozzles directed against the rolls or the band in the region of the rolling gaps. According to the invention, the planarity of the strip is measured immediately downstream (in the direction of strip movement) of the last rolling stand and deviations from planarity are determined and converted into control signals. The planarity measurement signal is compared with a deviation-maximum signal processor until the measured deviation reaches a first threshold within the range to maximum. Only the coolant spray from the nozzles of the last stand are controlled in a planarity-restoring sense. When the measured deviation exceeds this threshold at least the nozzles of the penultimate stand are controlled.

  • Patent number: 4388819
Abstract: In a multi-stand stretch-reducing tube-rolling mill, the stands at the entry end forming a first group are driven from a main motor and an auxiliary motor and the remaining stands forming a second group are driven from the main motor and a separate auxiliary motor, the corresponding rotational speeds derived from the main motor and one or other of the auxiliary motors being added by means of a planetary gear in a summing transmission. A single stand between the two groups can be driven from the main motor only. The separate auxiliary motor at the entry end enables control over the tube elongation (or compression) to be effected over a shorter tube length, and thereby more accurately.

  • Patent number: 4385511
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of rolling metal articles and can be used to advantage in rolling sheet steel. This method envisages the rotation of drive and driven work rolls in opposite directions at a higher and a lower peripheral speeds, respectively. The chosen ratio between the peripheral speeds of the work rolls is less than the elongation of the article so that thereby the specified unit tension applied to the article at the exit section thereof is provided for with reference to the ultimate strength of the metal emerging from the rolls. This is conducive to increasing the maximum elongation of the article and reducing the roll force by a considerable amount with the constriction of the article in breadth at the same time.

  • Patent number: 4383358
Abstract: An electrochemical cell having an anode which is an alloy of an oxidizable metal, specifically lithium, and an element having a lower oxidation potential, for example calcium. The cell is partially discharged to deplete the amount of lithium at the surface of the anode. Then the cell is conditioned, preferably by annealing at a temperature of about 70.degree. C. for one to two weeks. This treatment produces an anode having a surface region which is either a layer consisting mostly of the element or a lithium compound of the element. This protective coating on the anode limits the short circuit current which can flow through the cell.
