  • Patent number: 4367640
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for forming sheet metal ducts of varying conical configuration from pre-cut blanks having a baseline and element lines thereon. The apparatus comprises a frame supporting independent axially aligned feed rolls. Each roll is power driven by separate variable-speed motors providing for a different feed rate at each edge of the blank being formed. The driven sections of each feed roll are adjacent at the center of the axially aligned rolls. Idler rolls around the drive shaft form the remaining length of each roll. Corresponding segmented pinch rolls spaced axially at the center are arranged to pinch the blank to be formed against the feed rolls. Sensors are positioned between the spaced ends of the pinch rolls to detect the position of the blank baseline and the angularity of the element lines. The feed and pinch rolls are mounted on bases provided with bearings permitting axial shifting to maintain the blank baseline at the established position relative to the frame.

  • Patent number: 4367642
Abstract: A method of producing, by universal mills, H-beams which are excellent in the strength and toughness of the joint between web and flanges. In roughing process, symmetric convexes, which have substantially the same cross section and differ in position in different mills, are alternately formed on at least either of the outer and inner sides of the web and flanges of the piece being rolled, to forcibly cause metal flow in the joints between web and flanges and thereby to increase the amount of strain of the joints. In finishing process, the convexes formed in the roughing process are pressed, thereby obtaining a H-beam having predetermined dimensions.

  • Patent number: 4365409
Abstract: For filling sodium into the sodium reservoir of a sodium-sulphur cell, the reservoir is closed except for an open-ended metal filling tube. In a filling machine, the cell is heated to a temperature such that the sodium will remain liquid, the tube is temporarily sealed around a sodium outlet of the filling machine by an inflatable seal, the reservoir is evacuated of air, flushed with an inert gas and then evacuated for vacuum filling with a metered quantity of sodium through a sodium feed tube within said outlet and extending downwardly into the filling tube. The sodium is pressurized using an inert gas to force the sodium into the cell, the gas is evacuated and the filling tube on the cell sealed by pinching and welding.

  • Patent number: 4361023
Abstract: A restraining assembly for holding back and then releasing a mandrel which supports a tube being rolled in a rolling mill has a fork supported by a carriage which is driven by two endless chains. The carriage is articulated to two opposite links of the chains and the separation of the fork from the mandrel takes place as the chains run around end wheels and the carriage is tilted. To control this movement of the carriage the fork is at the forward or downstream end of the carriage and an additional connection is provided between the carriage and another link of at least one chain, preferably with play in the direction of movement of the chain.

  • Patent number: 4359818
Abstract: A film of organic electron donor material is formed to a predetermined thickness and shape and then the preformed film and a lithium element are pressed together in a manner bonding the film to the surface of the lithium element to form a coated lithium anode. During the pressing operation, the surface of the lithium element can be shaped to include formations such as corrugations which serve to increase the surface area thereof, and the pressure bonded film is of substantially uniform thickness over these formations. The resulting coating also is substantially free of voids so as to be of substantially uniform solidity. An entire coated anode assembly is formed in one pressing operation, so that bare lithium is not subjected to prolonged atmospheric exposure which, in turn, reduces or substantially eliminates the possibility of nitride formation on the surface of the lithium element which is coated simultaneously while being pressed.

  • Patent number: 4358945
Abstract: Piezoelectric transducers are mounted on support members of a gag press for sensing pressure vibrations arising in a workpiece in part as reflections of an initial pulse produced by the striking of the workpiece by a press ram at the initiation of a straightening operation. An electrical circuit is connected to the transducers for analyzing the sensed pressure waves and for comparing the analyzed waves to pre-established sound-threshold data stored in a memory. Upon detecting pressure waves indicative of an internal structural flaw in the workpiece, a microprocessor in the electrical circuit signals a ram drive to raise the ram and thereby terminate straightening operations, the defect-bearing workpiece being transferred to a scrap store or to a heat treatment plant by a sorter according to signals from the microprocessor.

  • Patent number: 4348882
Abstract: The hot rolling of metal slabs to strip thickness and in coils having a specific weight on the order of 500 pounds per inch of width and greater comprises passing a heated metal slab through a roughing mill to form a transfer bar. The transfer bar is immediately passed between work rolls of a reversing finishing mill stand where it is coiled in a furnace downstream of the reversing finishing mill stand. Thereafter, the workpiece is passed back through the reversing finishing mill stand and coiled in a furnace on the upstream side thereof. The workpiece is again passed through the reversing finishing mill stand and into the remaining finishing stands where it is further reduced and ultimately coiled in strip form. The first two passes through the reversing finishing mill stand are carried out at speeds in excess of the third pass and unrelated to the speed cone of the remainder of the continuous finishing stands.

  • Patent number: 4347725
Abstract: The stand-to-stand transmission ratios between the working sizing passes at the entry end of a rolling block for rolling bars, rods or wire are fixed but are different from one another. This enables an entire range of finished workpiece cross sections to be obtained from a given first pass workpiece entry cross-sectional area, merely by omitting one or more of the working stands and shifting other working stands from one location to another and by changing only the stands of the finishing sizing passes at the delivery end of the block.

  • Patent number: 4334418
Abstract: The machine has a base provided with three rollers between which cambered strip steel is passed to remove or reduce the camber therein. Two of the rollers are mounted extending above the top surface of the base along a longitudinal axis of the base. The third roller is mounted also extending above said top surface on a block which is slidable along a slot extending along the lateral axis of the base. The cambered strip steel is passed across the top of the base between the three rollers. A drive mechanism is provided to apply a force to the third roller which bends the cambered strip steel against the two rollers to remove or reduce the camber. Removable guide strips of a case hardened or other suitable metal are provided in the top as bearing members for the strip steel. The base may be fabricated of assembled components or cast as an integral member for cost economy.
