  • Patent number: 11674097
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for co-processing of pyrolysis tar with pre-pyrolysis flash bottoms. In some aspects, the co-processing can correspond to solvent-assisted hydroprocessing. By combining pyrolysis tar and flash bottoms with a solvent, various difficulties associated with hydroprocessing of the fractions can be reduced or minimized, such as difficulties associated with hydroprocessing of high viscosity feeds and/or high sulfur feeds. Optionally, separate solvents and/or fluxes can be used for the pyrolysis tar and the flash bottoms. The resulting upgraded products can be suitable, for example, for inclusion in low sulfur fuel oils (LSFO).

Abstract: A non-aqueous extraction process for producing a bitumen product from an oil sands material that includes an ablation stage is provided. The ablation stage can include adding an ablation solvent to an oil sands material to achieve a solvent-to-ore ratio of less than about 10, mixing the ablation solvent and the oil sands material to reduce the size of the oil sands material and produce ablated ore that includes ablated ore fragments having a diameter of less than about 2 inches, and retrieving the ablated ore as a single stream. The ablated ore can be subjected to a reject separation stage to separate reject material therefrom. The reject material can also be subjected to a wash reject stage. The ablated ore can then be subjected to an extraction stage. Examples of ablators are also described, which can include for instance a conveyor, or can be a rotary screen ablator.

  • Patent number: 11643603
Abstract: A non-aqueous extraction (NAE) process for producing bitumen from oil sands ore can include a multistage bitumen extraction step where paraffinic solvent and deasphalted oil are added at a downstream stage of extraction at solvent-to-bitumen ratios below asphaltene precipitation onset threshold to remove bitumen from the solid mineral material, while the ore is added to a first stage to mix with the solvent-bitumen mixture and produce solvent diluted bitumen. The process includes recovering the solvent diluted bitumen and the solvent diluted tailings from the extraction step. The solvent diluted bitumen is subjected to deasphalting to produce solvent diluted deasphalted bitumen that is used as a source of the paraffinic solvent and deasphalted oil supplied to extraction. The tailings and asphaltene fraction from deasphalting can be subjected to washing and the washed material can then be subjected to sand solvent recovery.

  • Patent number: 11596915
Abstract: Disclosed are systems, servers and methods for improving temperature profile control in a reactor with at least three fixed beds, exothermic reactions and interstage cooling. A model of the temperature differential across the first bed is developed and its error is used to infer unmeasured feed composition disturbances, which are used in the control of the downstream fixed beds for faster response to unmeasured feed composition changes and improved control of the temperature profile throughout the reactor. The first bed model error is then used as an input into an overall model that predicts reactor temperature profiles, which provides advanced notice of reactions in downstream beds, and enables efficient adjustment and compensation to a feed composition change. A Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm is applied to adjust the bed intercooling and first bed feed temperature so that the reactor temperature profile can be more precisely controlled.

  • Patent number: 11591530
Abstract: The furnace of a delayed coking unit which is utilized for heating residue feeds to high temperatures can suffer from decrease in run length and fouling caused by caustic carryover from the upstream desalter unit. An antifoulant additive for preventing caustic induced fouling of thermal cracker furnace tubes is disclosed. The described antifoulant additive acts by converting the inorganic caustic compound such as NaOH to naphthenate salt of the metal as well as by reducing the fouling tendency of the whole feedstock, thereby making it ineffective in causing coking reaction. The additive finds application in thermal residue upgradation furnaces such as delayed coking unit, visbreaker, etc.

  • Patent number: 11591526
Abstract: A process for upgrading a hydrocarbon feed includes passing the hydrocarbon feed and an aromatic bottoms stream to an FCC unit including an FCC reactor and a catalyst regenerator. The hydrocarbon feed is hydrogen-rich having at least 12 wt. % hydrogen, and the aromatic bottoms stream is a bottoms stream produced from an aromatics recovery complex for processing reformate from naphtha reforming. The hydrocarbon feed and aromatic bottoms stream are cracked over the FCC catalysts to produce an effluent and spent FCC catalysts having coke deposits. The spent FCC catalyst is regenerated through combustion of the coke deposits. The hydrogen-rich hydrocarbon feed does not produce enough coke to satisfy the heat demand of the FCC reactor. Cracking the aromatic bottoms stream increases the amount of coke so that combustion of the additional coke during regeneration produces additional heat to satisfy the heat demand of the FCC reactor.
