  • Patent number: 4753712
Abstract: Papermachine felts and wires are cleaned and maintained by pressurized fluid jets or showers which are oscillated transversely across the felt running direction over a fixed oscillation stroke distance. Superimposed on the fixed stroke distance is a periodic shift of the stroke reference point so that successive oscillations are not terminated at the same point. The oscillation drive mechanism is enclosed within a low pressure, gas-tight housing serviced by a pressure regulated gas supply. A reversible A-C motor is used to drive the mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4750340
Abstract: An apparatus for treating a fiber suspension, comprises a drum rotatably journalled to a stand and having an envelope surface to support a fiber web formed from the fiber suspension. A curved wall plate which is concave in the direction to the envelope surface of the drum is spaced from the envelope surface (and generally parallel thereto) to define a material space therebetween for said fiber web. The space includes an axial inlet gap and an axial outlet gap. The wall is continuous and encloses a major portion of the envelope surface of the drum and is arranged to move freely in the circumferential direction of the drum to compensate for radial alterations during adjustment of the distance of the wall from the envelope surface at one or more positions between the inlet gap and outlet gap. Adjustment devices cooperate with the wall for adjusting the distance of the wall from the envelope surface of the drum.

  • Patent number: 4741805
Abstract: A guiding apparatus is disclosed for guiding an extended nip press blanket relative to a pressing shoe. The apparatus includes a nose member which is pivotally-connected to the shoe for guiding the blanket relative to the shoe. An actuator is secured to the shoe for pivoting the nose member relative to the shoe. A connector extends between the actuator and the nose member for connecting the actuator to the nose member such that when the actuator is actuated, the nose member is skewed relative to the shoe so that the blanket is guided laterally relative to the shoe as the blanket moves over, and in contact with, the nose member.

  • Patent number: 4738752
Abstract: A press apparatus is disclosed for removing fluid from a fibrous web. The apparatus includes a press member and a blanket cooperating with the press member for defining therebetween an elongate pressing section such that the web is pressed between the press member and the blanket during passage through the pressing section. The blanket is urged towards the press member such that when the web passes through the pressing section, fluid is pressed from the web. A heating device is disposed adjacent to the press roll for transferring heat to the web such that when the web passes through the pressing section, the web is subjected for an extended period to increased pressure and temperature so that water vapor generated within the pressing section during the passage of the web through the pressing section forces the fluid in the liquid phase away from the web.

  • Patent number: 4737241
Abstract: A method of making a papermaker's felt which includes the steps of forming a pin seam fabric having interdigitated loops at the ends of the fabric joined by a pin. A batt of fibrous material is needled into at least one face of the fabric and across the pin seam joint. When the felt is to be installed on the papermaking machine, the pin is removed and the felt is bent back on itself at the joint to bring the portions of the batt adjacent the joint into contiguous or contacting relation and cause the loops to separate. The batt is then cut along a line extending through the separated loops to provide a flat or opened felt which can then be installed on the papermaking machine. After installation, the loops are interdigitated and the pin is reinserted through the loops to provide the endless felt construction.

  • Patent number: 4735686
Abstract: A method for forming a paper web by which web formation is improved and flocculation in the web is reduced includes the steps of feeding steam under pressure into the fiber suspension when the suspension enters into the gap of the former and as web formation is initiated over the perforated mantle of the forming roll. The steam is fed from a steam supply chamber or the like provided within the forming roll through the perforations in the roll mantle within a steam supply sector of the roll mantle. The steam feed is applied to the pulp web when the web is still substantially uncouched and in a manner such that when the steam condenses in the pulp suspension, an implosion is generated in the pulp suspension which produces high frequency mechanical vibrations which can be closely controlled to achieve the desired effects. A twin-wire former and forming roll therefor for applying the method are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4734164
Abstract: A system for forming a web from a dilute, aqueous slurry of fibers wherein a thin, horizontally-extending aqueous stream of fibers is projected onto a travelling foraminous forming wire. The forming wire is disposed to travel over a forming board which has a leading lip which is deflected downwardly with respect to the oncoming jet stream. The lower surface of the jet stream is disposed substantially parallel with the surface of the travelling foraminous wire wire at the point where the stream contacts the wire to minimize turbulence at the point of initial contact of the jet stream on the wire and subsequent spouting of the fibrous stock downstream in the forming zone.

  • Patent number: 4731163
Abstract: A profile bar for a discharge opening of a head box of a paper machine, by means of which the profile of the discharge jet from the paper machine is controlled. The profile bar may be connected to adjustment spindles, by means of which the profile bar can be bent in a plane transverse to a direction of flow of the discharge jet. Bending stiffness of the profile bar in the direction of bending to be achieved by means of the adjustment spindles, is arranged to be substantially lower within areas facing the adjustment spindles than at a middle of an area between the adjustment spindles. • Patent number: 4728396
Abstract: A coater and a method of operating such coater is disclosed. The method of operating the coater includes the steps of separating a first tail from a full width web unwound from an unwind stand at threading velocity and threading the first tail at the threading velocity through a pull stack. The first tail is widened to the full width of the web so that a full width web extends through the pull stack. The full width web emerging from the pull stack is dumped into a first broke chute which is disposed below the pull stack. The full width web extending through the pull stack is accelerated along with a coating apparatus to coating velocity so that both the full width web and the coating apparatus attain coating velocity. A second tail is cut in the full width web between the unwind stand and the pull stack and such second tail is threaded through the coating apparatus while the second tail is moving at coating velocity.
