  • Patent number: 4704192
Abstract: A press apparatus is disclosed for pressing a moving web formed on a forming wire. The apparatus includes a frame and a first plurality of rolls rotatably secured to the frame. A first continuous felt extends around the first plurality of rolls which include a pickup roll disposed adjacent to the wire for transferring the web from the wire onto the first felt. The first plurality of rolls also includes a first press roll which is disposed downstream relative to the pickup roll. A second continuous felt extends around a second plurality of rolls with the second felt cooperating with the first felt. The second plurality of rolls includes a second press roll which cooperates with the first press roll for defining therebetween a first nip. The web is urged against the second felt when the web emerges from the first nip and the second felt and supported web pass through a second nip defined by an extended nip press disposed downstream relative to the first nip.

  • Patent number: 4702800
Abstract: Apparatus for the purpose of enabling a paper mill to determine the extent to which the performance and/or the product of an existing Fourdrinier paper machine in the mill will be improved by its conversion into a top former machine comprises a fractional version of top forming apparatus which can be readily combined with an existing Fourdrinier machine in such manner that a minor portion of the forming width of the machine will be converted to top forming operation. The apparatus makes it possible to produce, on an existing Fourdriner machine, a sheet of which a small integral portion is formed by drainage through both the primary wire and a top wire, while the remainder of the sheet continues to be produced in the same manner as before the top wire testing.

  • Patent number: 4698154
Abstract: A modular unit as a filtering apparatus for a membrane separation process, especially for treating water by reverse osmosis, includes a pipe which is open at both ends. A stack of membranes adapted to the inner diameter of the pipe can be inserted into the pipe. The stack of filter elements, which includes guide plates, carrier plates, and membranes, is clamped together by a central clamping bolt which passes through the filter element stack between two fixed pressure plates. Located at the peripheries of the pressure plates are inclined circumferential grooves in which are disposed sealing rings which, when excess pressure exists in the interior of the housing, are urged radially and axially outwardly, and thus effect a good seal between the inner wall of the pipe and the peripheries of the pressure plates.

  • Patent number: 4693784
Abstract: A method for applying a negative pressure over a sector of an air-pervious mantle of a roll includes providing a suction chamber within the pervious roll mantle which extends over a suction sector of the roll, directing air jets away from the suction chamber at the outermost edge portions of the suction chamber, the air jets causing air currents to be ejected from the suction chamber at the outermost edge zones thereof, the air currents thereby producing air seals at the outermost edge zones of the suction chamber without the use of contact-type sealing elements and at the same time, at least partly, providing a negative pressure in the suction chamber. A suction roll includes blow nozzles for directing air jets away from the suction chamber substantially parallel to the tangent of the roll mantle proximate to the blow nozzles. The inlet sides of the blow nozzles are connected to a pressure chamber situated within the roll mantle, the pressure chamber adapted to be connected to a pressure source.

  • Patent number: 4692209
Abstract: The invention relates to the recovery of chemicals from waste liquor from wood pulp process, primarily black liquor, while utilizing energy liberated. Controlled total vaporization of the pulp waste liquor at high temperature and low oxygen potential is achieved by the external supply of energy. During the subsequent condensation and separation of melt or water solution is obtained which, without causticizing, can be used for the preparation of white liquor, and also an energy rich gas and mainly free from sulphur, consisting primarily of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

  • Patent number: 4687548
Abstract: Method and apparatus in the head box of a paper machine for controlling the distortion of fibre orientation in the paper web comprise an arrangement wherein by-pass flows of pulp suspension are passed through opposite passages lateral of the turbulence generator preceding the slice portion or discharge channel of the head box. The magnitude and/or the mutual relationship of the by-pass flows is adjusted to control the distortion of the fibre orientation in that the by-pass flows produce a transverse flow in the discharge flow of the pulp suspension from the head box, the speed of which compensates for the distortion of the fibre orientation.

  • Patent number: 4686004
Abstract: A twin-wire former for a paper machine which can produce paper of good formation over a wide range of basis weight and at a speed of wide variation essentially consisting of a top wire and a bottom wire. The bottom wire with a wet material thereon substantially horizontally travels. The top wire approaches the material from above and travels downward together with the bottom wire on the circumference of a supporting member provided in the loop of the bottom wire while pressing the material between the pair of wires. At the position of a force roll provided in the loop of the top wire, the pair of wires commence travelling upwardly through a suction box to a couch roll, where the pair of wires separate from each other. To adjust the wire contacting angle of the supporting member, and hence, to improve the formation of paper, each of a water receiver, the force roll and suction boxes and made movable.

  • Patent number: 4684073
Abstract: Apparatus for thickening, or de-watering, and refining fibre-pulpsuspensions include a screw-press thickener (1) and a refiner (2). In order to prevent air from entering the pulp and to provide a simpler arrangement, the outfeed end of the screw-press thickener (1) is connected directly to the infeed end of the refiner (2), therewith also to serve as an infeed screw to the refiner (2). In this respect the thickener (1) has a screening jacket (5) which embraces the screw (6). The screening jacket has at least one section which converges in the pulp feed direction, to achieve in the screw-press (1) a press effect required for de-watering the pulp while at the same time achieving the requisite reduction in diameter of the screening jacket (5) for connection to the refiner (2).

  • Patent number: 4684444
Abstract: A sorter for paper pulp suspension including a rotationally symmetrical wire cage and a rotor supporting a plurality of vanes for rotating about the interior of the cage for moving suspension through the wire cage, the vanes being non-uniformly spaced. An annular pulp chamber surrounds the screen for collecting the pulp. A suspension outlet at the bottom of the pulp chamber receives the pulp from the pulp chamber. The pulp chamber extends axially beyond the lower end of the wire cage. An annular damping chamber surrounds the lower end of the pulp chamber and flow from the pulp chamber to the pulp outlet is past the damping chamber. The damping chamber develops a pool of the suspension in it. A pressurized gas cushion above the pool of suspension in the damping chamber controls the level thereof and damps the motion of the pulp in the pulp chamber.

  • Patent number: 4683027
Abstract: Method and apparatus for regulating pressure in a wedge-shaped space between the wall of the headbox lip beam or the like and the breast roll. An arrangement is provided by which air jets are directed in a direction opposite to the direction in which the forming wire moves on the breast roll to eject air out of the wedge-shaped space to maintain the pressure induced therein at a desired level. The apparatus includes a blow box coupled to a source of pressurized air and the box having a wall in opposed relationship to the forming wire in which nozzle openings or slots are formed through which the air jets are directed. The blow box has a wider side which substantially closes the wedge-shaped space. Water jets are directed into the wedge-shaped space by water supply devices provided on the blow box for cleaning purposes.
