  • Patent number: 8897254
Abstract: An apparatus and method for selecting a beam group and a subset of beams in a communication system are disclosed. The method includes: measuring channel state information (CSI) on a downlink from a base station (920); identifying a selected beam group out of a set of beam groups according to a wideband property of the CSI (930); identifying a selected subset of beams in the selected beam group according to at least one subband (940). Wherein the characteristic of the set of beam groups depends on a transmission rank and the number of beams in the selected subset of beams is equal to the transmission rank. The method further includes: generating encoded feedback information identifying the selected beam group and the selected subset of beams for each subband in a double codebook format (950), transmitting the encoded feedback information to the base station.

  • Patent number: 8891488
Abstract: In one aspect, the teachings herein provide an enhanced inter-base-station interface and associated processing in which a base station receives a message from a neighboring base station that zero served PLMNs are available in a neighboring cell. In response to receiving that message, the base station removes the neighboring cell from its neighbor list, or otherwise marks the neighboring cell as unavailable, but advantageously does not discard any network performance data accumulated or otherwise generated for that neighboring cell. Correspondingly, should the base station receive a subsequent message indicating that one or more served PLMNs have become available in the neighboring cell, it restores the neighboring cell to its neighbor list and reinstates links or associations, as needed, to the retained network performance data.

  • Patent number: 8855143
Abstract: The enclosed system and method provides a means by which metadata-encoded or otherwise self-describing messages can be communicated, stored or otherwise utilized at a greatly reduced message size. This is accomplished for a given message through decomposing it into message metadata and message data, using a hash of the message metadata along with the message data to represent the message while in its decomposed form absent of original message metadata, and subsequently recomposing the message from the message metadata and message data using the hash as a reference. The method disclosed herein exploits detected repetition of sets of metadata, deriving benefit each time a hash is communicated, stored or otherwise used in lieu of a set of metadata, the hash being smaller in size than the set of metadata itself.

  • Patent number: 8830839
Abstract: A backhaul link is established between a base station and a relay that assists the base station in communicating with a mobile device over an access link established between the relay and the mobile device. The channel response of the backhaul link is determined by estimating first and second parts of the backhaul link channel response, the second part changing faster than the first part. The first part of the backhaul link channel response is estimated by calculating an average of the backhaul link channel response over a predetermined period at the relay and the second part is estimated by calculating variation in the backhaul link channel response over the predetermined period at the relay. Quantized versions of the first and second parts of the backhaul link channel response are transmitted from the relay to the base station over the backhaul link.

  • Patent number: 8824361
Abstract: A multi-frequency band receiver includes first and second receive paths, a combiner, a code multiplex baseband stage and an amplifier controller. The first and second receive paths receive and process first and second code multiplex signals, respectively. The first or the second receive path includes an amplifier having a variable gain factor. The combiner superposes the first and second processed code multiplex signals. The code multiplex baseband stage processes the superposed code multiplex signal to obtain and use first and second baseband receive signals. The first and second baseband receive signals represent data of the first and second code multiplex signals, respectively. In addition, the amplifier controller controls the gain factor of the amplifier having a variable gain factor so that the first or the second baseband receive signal includes a minimum reception quality which can be variably predetermined and is dependent on the operating state.
