Abstract: Excellent stabilization of polypropylene (PP) is obtained with a hindered amine containing a polysubstituted piperazin-2-one (PSP) moiety, for example, a C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 alkylene connecting two PSP moieties, or a polyalkylene polyamine having pendant substituted oxo-piperazinyltriazine moieties (PIP-T), that is, having pendant triazine rings substituted with PSP substituents. The stabilizers are particularly effective for PP irradiated with high energy gamma-radiation. Irradiated articles made from PP stabilized with such a hindered amine have improved strength and discoloration resistance, compared to articles made from polymer stabilized with several other hindered amines tested, particularly the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidyl sebacate.

Abstract: Compounds containing a group of the formula I ##STR1## in which R is H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, R.sup.1 is H, CN, an acyloxy group or a free valency and R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are organic radicals can be prepared in a simple manner from the corresponding compounds containing a group of the formula Ia ##STR2## by stepwise reaction with phosgene and a secondary amine R.sup.2 --NH--R.sup.3 in the presence of a molar amount of a base. The N-diorganocarbamoyl compounds containing the group I are outstanding light stabilizers, in particular for organic polymers. They can be converted by secondary reactions into other compounds which contain the group I and which are not accessible by direct phosgenation. Many of the products thus obtainable by phosgenation or conversion are novel compounds.

Abstract: A process is provided for the production of a polymer of reduced molecular weight by subjecting, in bulk form, a halogenated butyl polymer having at least 75 percent of the unsaturation in the EXO methylene configuration to mastication in an extruder while exposing the masticated polymer to an atmosphere containing ozone. Such reduced molecular weight polymers have an M.sub.n of from about 10,000 to about 40,000 and may be used in caulks and sealants.
Abstract: The ultraviolet light radiation stability as manifested, for instance, by the resistance to yellowing is improved for polyphenylene ether resins and blends by including a combination of a benzotriazole-based screening-type UV stabilizer and a hindered dipiperidinyl antioxidant-type UV stabilizer. The combination of the two stabilizers exhibits syneristic behavior in the compositions, conferring better resistance to yellowing than can be predicted and expected from the observed effects of each stabilizer alone. Flame retardant embodiments are illustrated.
Abstract: An improvement in curable compositions which comprise a polyglycidyl ether such as the triglycidylether of tris(hydroxyphenyl)methane and a halogenated dihydric phenol such as tetrabromobisphenol A, the improvement being employing as the halogenated dihydric phenol one in which the halogen atoms are meta with respect to the hydroxyl groups such as 2,2',6,6'-tetrabromo-3 ,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-biphenol. These compositions can be cured by heating in the presence or absence of a catalyst for reacting epoxy groups with phenolic hydroxyl groups such as 2-methyl imidazole. These compositions are particularly useful in the preparation of electrical laminates.
