  • Patent number: 4601187
Abstract: Apparatus and method for twisting thin strip material such as thin aluminum strip in which the strip material is guided from a supply of strip material along a feed path 21 to a guide mechanism 11 which maintains the strip in a first plane and is then passed to two rolls 31, 32, at least one of which is driven. The rolls have on their outer circumferential edges 33, 34 grooves 41 which grip opposite edges of the strip, the rolls 31, 32 being mounted so that their axes of rotation are twisted with respect to one another whereby the strip is driven forwards by the rolls 31, 32 and twisted as it passes through the rolls to form a helically twisted strip.

  • Patent number: 4600347
Abstract: This relates to a double seam tightness monitor wherein the second operation track of a cam of a double seaming apparatus or can closing machine is modified so as to permit the high dwell portion of the lobe thereof to deflect under loading from the associated cam follower which forces the second operation roll against the double seam component. Suitable strain gauges are associated with the deformable cam track portion and these are coupled in a bridge having a voltage output which is directed to a microprocessor. The microprocessor is provided with selected inputs which in combination with the voltage input from the bridge may be utilized to provide various signals including a high force condition signal, a pass condition signal, and a low force condition signal. There may also be associated with the microprocessor a printer for identifying the station where an abnormal condition exists, the specific force of the abnormal condition, the machine number, the time and the date.

  • Patent number: 4597280
Abstract: A headpiece assembly for forming a rolled flange on the border of a collar associated with an annular lid. A sleevelike headpiece is axially slidably supported on a shaft and projects downwardly so as to surround and cooperate with a plurality of clamping levers. The clamping levers at the lower free ends have a clamping part which moves into a radially inward position wherein the clamping part is axially aligned below an annular flange-forming recess, the latter being formed on a pressure plate which is mounted on the lower end of the shaft for limited axial movement therebetween. The pressure plate and the lower free ends of the levers are disposed axially downwardly from the sleevelike headpiece. Downward movement of the headpiece cams the clamping levers radially inwardly to a position below the pressure plate, and causes the headpiece to engage the pressure plate and move it downwardly so as to effect formation of a rounded flange on the metal collar.

  • Patent number: 4590655
Abstract: A tubular metal member undergoes expansion transverse to the longitudinal axis of the member. An axial compressive load is applied to the member parallel to the member's longitudinal axis, and the member is allowed to deform transversely to said axis. Procedures are employed to control the deformation of the member, to prevent the member from buckling, and to ensure that the ends of the member will be expanded uniformly with the remainder of the member.

A clutch disc connected rationally rigidly to the spindle is connectable by friction contact to a driven disc flywheel for the operating stroke of the slide. Piston-cylinder units act between the press frame and the slide for returning the slide to the starting position. The spindle is axially clamped between two spring columns, one of which acts between one end of the spindle and the slide and the other of which acts between the other end of the spindle and a counter thrust bearing axially fixed in the press frame.

  • Patent number: 4588390
Abstract: Apparatus for sealing deformable sheet material blanks comprises ultrasonic energy means having a sonotrode mounted for relative movement toward and away from an anvil surface carrying projections thereon. The anvil projections enable maximizing sonic energy from the sonotrode to form rapid and efficient seals in carton blanks. The carton blanks preferably carry a varnish having thermoplastic solvents in a liquid vehicle with the solids being present in sufficient amount to form a thermoplastic seal when processed in the ultrasonic apparatus. The method of forming the carton blanks utilizes printing techniques to apply the varnish and preferably the novel ultrasonic apparatus to enable rapid seals with minimized requirement for ultrasonic energy application due to compressing of sheet material at the seals to be formed.
