  • Patent number: 4513600
Abstract: A cam actuated ejector is provided with a shell press having a crankshaft for reciprocating a slide to which die tooling is mounted and having a forming station in which the die tooling forms a part to be ejected. The ejector includes a kicker bar slidably received within a recess in the press and which is in close proximity to and substantially coplanar with a part to be ejected. The kicker bar is positively reciprocated by a cam assembly that is synchronously engaged with the crankshaft, which operates the press slide, such that an end of the kicker bar cyclically moves at a first rate of movement from a first position outside the forming station to an intermediate position wherein the end contacts a part to be ejected.

  • Patent number: 4513595
Abstract: Methods of necking-in and flanging tubular can bodies having body walls of constant thickness. A pilot die initially inserted into the tubular can body reverses its direction during the necking-in operation with respect to the motion of a ring die member that contacts the exterior surface of the tubular can body member. This concurrent reverse movement of the two forming dies eliminates wrinkles in the necked-in region and produces a container body with increased columnar strength. Repetitive use of the method produces containers with two or three necked-in portions. A method is also disclosed for relubricating the necked-in area of the tubular can body between the successive necking stations.

  • Patent number: 4513598
Abstract: A tube bulger for producing an enlarged ring-like bulge in the material around an end portion of a metal tube includes upper and lower die sections. When the upper and lower die sections are mated together, a cylindrical hole is formed. The end portion of the tube to be bulged extends into the hole. A ring-like, outwardly oriented enlargement of the cylindrical hole in the mated die sections forms a bulge cavity into which the bulge moves as it is being formed. An elongated mandrel extends through the opposite end of the cylindrical hole and into the open end of the tube. First and second sealing rings disposed about the mandrel on opposite sides of the bulge cavity prevent leakage of pressurized oil between the die and the mandrel. An oil conducting channel has an opening between the sealing rings.

  • Patent number: 4512171
Abstract: A rupture disc system comprises a rupture disc including a dome portion and a flange portion interconnected by a transition region and a mounting mechanism for mounting the rupture disc by the flange portion thereof in a pressure relieving vent. The rupture disc includes a thickness reducing groove at least partially circumferentially surrounding the dome portion and located in the transition region thereof. Preferably, the rupture disc is of the reverse buckling type and the groove does not completely surround the dome portion so as to define a tab or hinge within that part of the transition region which is ungrooved or not as deeply grooved as a remainder of the transition region. In addition, the slope or radius of curvature may be increased in the region of the tab. The rupture disc also includes an indentation on the dome portion. The indentation is preferably greatest on the dome portion at a location spaced from the transition region and directly between the tab and a crown of the dome portion.

  • Patent number: 4511299
Abstract: An easy open pull-tab container and related method comprises a generally planar end having a line of weakness defining a tear line so that a portion of the end is partially removable, the tear line lying in the plane of the end. A pull-tab is provided for severing the portion along the tear line, with first and second portions of the end wall on opposite sides of, and spaced from the line of weakness, extending underneath the area adjacent the line of weakness and to form blunt, protective shoulders at the line of weakness. The protective shoulders are formed via first and second concentric grooves in the end, the grooves extending below the level of the end to form inner and outer beads, the inner bead extending substantially below the outer bead. A central bead is formed in the end between the first and second concentric grooves, the central head extending above the level of the end.

  • Patent number: 4509564
Abstract: Single and multi-phase, multi-pole arrays of adjacent equivalent current loops are formed in a self-supporting structure as wound. The multi-pole windings are formed by zig-zag winding elements having peaks and troughs. The peaks and troughs of each winding element form alternate halves of adjacent effective or equivalent current loops. When the peaks of one winding element are aligned with the troughs of another, the two elements provide a single phase ring of adjacent coupled current loops equivalent to the conventional separately wound coils. However, the current loops are already in a correctly positioned and oriented array as wound. The filaments of one winding element cross over the filaments of another intermediate the peaks and troughs and current passes in one direction through the first element returning in the opposite direction through the second. Multi-phase windings in a variety of configurations are described.

  • Patent number: 4507108
Abstract: A sliding plunger with rack-shaped opposite sides controls opposite rotations of a pair of rotating sector gears, with which integrally rotate two arms extending up to the proximity of the conveying units. Connecting rods are finally interposed between said arms and said conveying units to transform the rotary motion of the arms into a corresponding translatory motion of said conveying units in opposite senses along fixed rectilinear guides transversally disposed with respect to the carton support base. The control of the sliding of the rack plunger can be given by a pneumatic cylinder or by a hand-control lever. There can be provided adjustable means for limiting the sliding plunger stroke in the sense corresponding to the mutual removal of the conveying units and elastical thrust means acting on the same plunger in the opposite sense.

  • Patent number: 4505142
Abstract: A high pressure hydraulic tool such as a tube swaging apparatus having a lengthwise-flexible, hollow metallic delivery conduit extending from a hydraulic pressure source to an adaptor. The conduit has an outer diameter of less than about one-eighth inch and an inner diameter of from about 0.01 inch to about 0.05 inch, the conduit being fabricated from a metal having a tensile strength sufficiently great that the tube will not fail when pressurized to at least about 30,000 psi. Swivelable connectors join the lengthwise-flexible conduit to the hydraulic pressure source and to the adaptor, so that the hydraulic source may be connected readily to a succession of tubes to be swaged.

  • Patent number: 4505144
Abstract: An apparatus for working both ends of a workpiece at a time. The workpiece, typically in the form of a bar or a tube, is successively shaped by pre-shaping die means, shaping die means and finish-shaping die means, each of which comprises a pair of dies for simultaneously working both ends of the workpiece to a predetermined configuration. The dies in each pair are movable toward and away from the both ends of the workpiece, respectively, in accordance with the operation of a pair of hydraulic devices. A pair of knockout rods respectively slidably received in cylinders of the hydraulic devices cooperate to support the workpiece while the latter is progressively shaped. One of the knockout rods is fixed to one of the dies while the other knockout rod is held afloat relative to the other die by a hydraulic device, so that the workpiece is allowed to stretch to a full available length only at one end thereof on the afloat knockout rod side.

  • Patent number: 4503700
Abstract: A rail is rolled from a hot-rolled bloom having a square or rectangular cross section by a method which is constituted by the steps of breakdown rolling, universal rolling, which is effected by causing the bloom to travel through a plurality of stands making only a single pass on each stand, base-wheel rolling, head-wheel rolling and edging. The bloom is broken down into substantially H-shaped beam blank whose cross section is symmetrical with respect to the center line of its web. In the base-wheel rolling, the flanges of the blank corresponding to the head and base of the rail are respectively rolled widthwise and thicknesswise in three or more passes using a pair of horizontal rolls and a vertical roll, respectively.
