  • Patent number: 4504259
Abstract: The linear conveying route of a first folding material conveying device (1), oriented toward the roll nip (6) of a pair of folding rolls (7, 8), and the conveying route of a second folding material conveying device (11), the conveying direction (16, 17) of which is reversible, converge in an acute angle toward the folding roll nip (6). A deflection guide means guides, in its operative position (20), the portion (43) of the folding material (43, 44) leading in the conveying direction (9) of the first conveying device (1) from the conveying route end of this conveying device (1) to the conveying route of the second conveying device (11), whereupon both conveying devices (1 and 11) each continue transporting a portion of the folding material (43, 44) until the location (A) to be folded reaches a certain position at the deflection guide means (20).

  • Patent number: 4504260
Abstract: Envelope blanks are scored and folded by pressing the flat blanks through a series of scoring and folding rolls. The rolls include vacuum rolls which invert the envelope blanks during the scoring operation. The blanks are scored laterally and as they pass over the outer surface of one of the vacuum rolls they are scored longitudinally. During the longitudinal scoring operation, the envelopes are curvilinear due to their being drawn down onto one of the vacuum rolls. After the longitudinal scoring operation, the blanks are inverted by being folded along the transverse score. The inverted, folded blanks are then moved along by a pair of cooperating vacuum rolls to a gumming station. After being gummed, the blanks are folded along their longitudinal scores with the folded flaps being secured in place by the gum.

  • Patent number: 4502308
Abstract: A swaging apparatus includes a mandrel to be inserted in a tubular structure that is to be expanded radially. A pair of seals define the axial boundaries of an annular pressure zone between the mandrel and the tubular structure. One or both of the seals includes a support formed by a plurality of arcuate segments elastically held together and presenting a cam surface. A cam member interacts with the cam surface to expand the support radially in response to swaging pressure, thereby preventing inelastic deformation of an elastic member on the high pressure side of the support.

  • Patent number: 4494392
Abstract: Apparatus for expanding a tube into a bore formed in tube sheet in which a primary explosive containing a relatively high number of grains of explosive per unit length extends within the tube coextensive with that portion of the tube to be expanded. An energy transfer cord extends between a detonator and the primary explosive and includes a relatively low number of grains of explosive per unit length which are insufficient to detonate the primary explosive but which be covered by a sheath to contain the debris and gases associated with the explosion of the latter explosive. A booster extends between the energy transfer cord and the primary explosive and contains an explosive which is detonatable by the energy transfer cord and, upon exploding, detonates the primary explosive.

  • Patent number: 4493201
Abstract: A strong, seamless one-piece metal bottle of substantially uniform wall thickness for containing and dispensing gas under pressure is produced from a flat metal piece by a series of deep-drawing operations to provide an elongated cylindrical shell having an open end mouth and a slight flange thereabout. A dimple is formed in its bottom end wall. The flange and an adjacent cylindrical open end mouth portion of the shell is then severed from the main body, and the wall thickness of the new open end mouth portion is tapered from the cylindrical side wall of the shell towards its mouth edge. Thereafter, the tapered open mouth end portion is turned or swaged inwardly into a somewhat blunt, rounded-in nose portion of a substantially uniform thickness that substantially corresponds in the thickness to the side and bottom walls of the formed metal bottle and that has an open end of reduced size suitable for mounting a nipple, ferrule or valve fitting therein.

  • Patent number: 4489579
Abstract: In a mold for the superplastic forming of a piece from a blank, the distortion of the blank is measured by a hollow tube located within the mold and having one end positioned in contact with the blank. The hollow tube extends through a sleeve fixed to the mold and includes an axial array of holes. A bore in the sleeve is connected to a source of low pressure gas via a delivery tube so that the low pressure gas can selectively communicate with the interior of the hollow tube as the movement of the tube causes the selective registry of the holes therein with the delivery tube. Such selective registry causes a pressure drop in the delivery tube which is measured by a pressure drop detector and accompanying recorder. Electrical leads are provided on the inner surface of the mold for evaluating when the distortion of the blank causes the face of the blank to reach selected portions of the mold inner surface.

  • Patent number: 4488346
Abstract: A pipe and sleeve telescoped joint with the pipe and sleeve in sealing engagement and keys embedded in both pipe and sleeve at their interface. The size and number of the keys are calculated from the size and strength of the pipe. The sleeve is sized and its strength selected from the strength of the pipe, and the sleeve ends are shaped to hold the joint circular when it is made. The apparatus includes means for holding the midportion of the sleeve circular when creating the joint, and for cooperating with the sleeve ends to keep them circular. The sealing engagement is created by firing a propellant into a substantially incompressible medium, like water, held by the apparatus in a cavity about the sleeve, and a piston separates the explosive propellant from the pressure medium.

  • Patent number: 4488426
Abstract: A double-blow header particularly suited for producing semitubular rivets is disclosed. The header is provided with three separate adjustments for controlling the position and operation of the extrusion pin, all of which can be adjusted while the machine is operating. A first adjustment determines the rearwardmost position of the extrusion pin and, in turn, adjustably determines the mass of material contained within the shank of the workpiece. A first powered drive adjustably determines the stroke of the extrusion pin during a piercing operation without altering the rearwardmost position thereof. A second powered drive adjustably determines the kickout stroke without altering the final position of kickout. The kickout drive adjustment and the first adjustment are interconnected so that both of them are adjusted in a related manner.
