  • Patent number: 4580392
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for the processing of a material web to convert the same to individual packing containers filled with contents. Flexible packing containers for milk or other beverages are manufactured from tubular material which is filled with contents, formed and divided to packing containers with the help of alternately working forming and sealing jaws which are given a reciprocating movement in the longitudinal direction of the tube and in the transverse direction of the tube. In accordance with the invention the jaws are guided and driven by guiding and driving rods which run parallel with the material tube and to which different reciprocating movements are imparted.

  • Patent number: 4580472
Abstract: A cutting tool assembly comprising a tool holder with a clamping collet and an interchangeable tool insert with a clamping shaft engageable by the clamping collet, matching conical surfaces on the periphery of the tool holder and of the tool insert providing centering as well as axial and radial force transmitting functions, while cooperating spline profiles on the assembly components provide a separate tangential force transmitting function. The clamping collet and the clamping shaft engage each other with multiple conical coupling faces which, under a pulling action of a rod connected to the collet, produce an axial pull on the tool insert while spreading radially between the clamping shaft and the tool holder to produce a radial wedging action. These conical coupling faces may be part of axially spaced identical ridges, the clamping collet expanding radially to clear the ridges for insertion, or they may be flanks of cooperating threads, the clamping collet being rotatable.

  • Patent number: 4578054
Abstract: Apparatus for opening flattened cartons having a pair of minor flaps and a pair of major flaps. A constant speed conveyor carries a horizontally disposed flattened carton across an actuator having a cam surface. The cam surface moves upward to fold one pair of major and minor flaps upward and then downward to fold the other pair of major and minor flaps downward. A clamp grasps the upward folded major flap and draws it upward as the conveyor moves the carton forward causing the carton to open. The clamp releases the major flap and the carton moves past a glue gun which applies glue to the minor flaps. A pair of curl bars folds the major flaps against the glue coated minor flaps. An extending platen presses the flaps against a roller bank permitting the glue to set. The platen retracts and the opened and bottom-sealed carton is completed.

  • Patent number: 4576068
Abstract: A cam-controlled boring bar system (100) includes a first housing (152) which is rotatable about its longitudinal axis (154), and a second housing in the form of a cam-controlled slide (158) which is also rotatable about the axis (154) as well as being translatable therealong. A tool-holder (180) is mounted within the slide (158) for holding a single point cutting tool. Slide (158) has a rectangular configuration and is disposed within a rectangularly configured portion of the first housing (152). Arcuate cam slots (192) are defined within a side plate (172) of the housing (152), while cam followers (194) are mounted upon the cam slide (158) for cooperative engagement with the cam slots (192). In this manner, as the housing (152) and slide (158) rotate, and as the slide (158) also translates, a through-bore (14) having an hourglass configuration will be formed within a workpiece (16) which may be, for example, a nuclear reactor steam generator tube support plate.

  • Patent number: 4576070
Abstract: A pipe cutter having guidance means for cutting a pipe on a plane generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the pipe. A power tool imparts a rotational torque to a shaft having a circular cutting blade carried thereon at substantially right angles thereto. The guidance means, having a pipe contacting surface, is journalled onto the end of the shaft, so that rotation of the shaft and blade will not cause rotation of the guidance means. The method involves aligning the rotating blade at a preselected cutting point, imbedding the blade into the walls of the pipe until an arcuate portion of said walls is cut, and thereafter imparting an orbital motion to the shaft about the pipe axis to achieve the pipe cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 4574666
Abstract: A numerically controlled automatic lathe comprises radial tools fanning out around that part of a bar of stock emerging from a guidance bush. Each of the tools is fastened to the end of a cylindrical slider guided by a bore of a fixed support. Each slider can be displaced within its bore by a gear which is fixed in the axial direction, engages a slider thread and meshes with a pinion gear of a stepping motor subject to numerical control and fastened to the support parallel to the slider. A sleeve permits centering the cutting edge of the tool by means of an offset screw, of which the tip transversely displaces a shoe constrained within a longitudinal groove of the slider.

  • Patent number: 4574442
Abstract: A boring, skiving, and roller burnishing tool includes means for boring, skiving, and burnishing a cylindrical hole in a workpiece. The boring means comprises a plurality of cutting blades oriented at a particular angle to remove a relatively large amount of material from the hole. The roller burnishing means includes a roller race having a central axis and a frustoconical outer surface tapering radially outward and axially forward. Rollers are arranged about the outer surface of the race for rolling engagement with the internal surface of the hole. The smaller ends of the rollers face forward, and the taper of the rollers is such that the outermost surface portion of each roller is parallel to the central axis of the race. The rollers are biased in the forward direction using a roller pusher with a chosen force so that the force exerted on the internal surface of the hole remains constant over a range of sizes of the hole.

  • Patent number: 4573380
Abstract: The apparatus permits the relative rotation of a component on a rotating spindle by means of a superimposition drive having two inputs and one output. At one input the spindle rotation is fed in, while at the other a desired rotation of the component, which in turn is connected to the output of the drive, is fed in. The rotational position and/or rotating force can be measured and controlled. Applied to adjusting movements on machine tool spindles, for example for powered chucks or radially adjustable rotating tools.

  • Patent number: 4573831
Abstract: A milling cutter blade with a notched cutting edge capable of being mounted at a desired negative or positive rake in a cutter body, the notches having side walls which, at the side face, diverge away from the cutting edge. The blade edge surfaces adjacent the cutting edges are of concave, generally V-shaped configuration with the junctures of these edge surfaces with the side faces being at an acute angle. A plurality of the blades are mounted in a cutter body to form a milling cutter assembly such that one portion of the configurated concavity V on the blade back edge surface is in reference engagement with a like oriented cutter body reference surface on a convex generally V-shaped back surface of a cutter body blade slot. The V-shaped concavity on the front edge surface of the blade cooperates with the adjacent chip pocket of the cutter body to discharge chips.

  • Patent number: 4573379
Abstract: The apparatus comprises a motor stator which is stationary relative to the rotating spindle, while the rotor of the motor rotates in synchronism with, for example, the nut of a screw mechanism which as a whole forms part of the spindle. A variable dependent on the angular position of the nut is controlled by corresponding operation of the motor and can be maintained irrespective of the speed of rotation of the spindle. The apparatus is particularly intended and suitable for the work spindles of machine tools.

  • Patent number: 4569619
Abstract: A metal cutting tool is described having an elongated tool body with an elongated, preferably arcuate, tool face portion. A plurality of recesses are formed in the tool face, each having a flat bottom face inclined inwardly and rearwardly to the longitudinal axis of the tool body. Each recess contains an indexable small, square, thin cutter insert with a bottom face resting on the flat bottom of the recess. Each insert has a flat bottom face, while the top face has a shallow generally spherical convex contour. Each side face is generally concave and forms an arcuate cutting edge with the convex top face. Each side face forms an acute angle with the top face of the insert, and the magnitude of this acute angle and the degree of inclination of the recess flat bottom face are such as to provide a positive rake angle of 1.degree.-30.degree. between the cutter portion and the work cut.
