  • Patent number: 4552492
Abstract: A cutting insert presents clearance and rake faces constructed and dimensionally interrelated to provide a plurality of adjacent offset, substantially parallel, non-coplanar cutting edges. The offset is in the range of from about 0.010 to 0.100 inch and the planes along the clearance face, which include the cutting edges, form part of a series of steps defined by intersecting planes. Each of the angles between these intersecting planes has a value of at least about 90 degrees.

  • Patent number: 4552493
Abstract: In the apparatus a cross-feed head is supported at a rotatable spindle. A cross-feed slide of the cross-feed head is arranged to be displaceable by means of a displacement drive and a displacement mechanism in a cross-feed displacement direction. The rotatable spindle is arranged on a carriage for displacement in a carriage displacement direction transversely with respect to the spindle. Furthermore, a numerical control is provided. In order to be able to adjust the radial position of the cross-feed slide with greater precision a sensor or feeler is fixedly arranged together with the displacement drive at one end of the carriage displacement travel path. An adjusting control or device controls the displacement of the cross-feed slide in conjunction with the sensor and with the displacement drive.

  • Patent number: 4552046
Abstract: The present invention comprises a cutting tool having a cutting tool insert which may be automatically rotationally indexed. The cutting tool includes a shank and an indexable cutting tool insert rotatably connected to the shank. The insert includes a plurality of tips and a side surface therebetween. Indexing means including an index member slidably mounted to the shank are also provided. The index member includes a locking surface and a cam lobe. The indexing means is effective for rotating the insert upon extension of the index member so that the cam lobe pushingly engages the insert, and locking the insert in a stationary cutting position upon retraction of the index member so that the locking surface is securely positioned against the insert side surface. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, the index member comprises a slider which is translatable only in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis thereof.

  • Patent number: 4552491
Abstract: A ceramic insert for a tool holder is in the shape of a tapered cylinder wherein the diameter increases outwardly along the insert length, from a first end to a second end. The second or upper end of the insert has a bevel around its circumference; the intersection of the bevel and tapered sidewall of the cylinder provide a cutting edge which has a negative rake and relief angle which are desirably constant around the insert. Thus the insert may be mounted on a neutral plane in a tool holder and a tool will cut equally well in any direction along a 180.degree. arc. Various engagement and clamping means are used to hold the insert in place in the tool holder.

  • Patent number: 4550635
Abstract: A pipe end cutting apparatus for processing pipes without variations in the angle of bevel and the root face thickness due to changes in the diameter of the pipes. There are provided a pipe clamping device for clamping the inside of a pipe, a rotary driving unit supported on the pipe clamping device, a feed unit for moving the rotary driving unit in the axial direction, and a control unit for controlling the rotary driving unit to rotate concentrically with the pipe. Processing tools for cutting the pipe end are mounted on the rotary driving unit through parallelogram links in such a manner that the processing tools are each caused to make a parallel movement in the radial direction of the pipe, while maintaining its cutting angle at a given angle with respect to the pipe end.

  • Patent number: 4546681
Abstract: A steady rest is disclosed for alternatively supporting the interanl and external surfaces of a tubular workpiece during a machining operation. Each outer end of a plurality of movable fingers includes first and second workpiece contact devices such as rollers. The second contact device is offset from the longitudinal axis of the finger so that it may engage the inner periphery of the workpiece. The opposite inner ends of the outer fingers ride in slots having opposing arcuate cam surfaces. One cam surface provides backup support for its finger when externally contacting the workpiece while the other cam surface insures stability when its finger is contacting the inner periphery of the workpiece.
