  • Patent number: 4823498
Abstract: A line cutting apparatus includes a cutting tool and a mounting base separate from the tool. In the present embodiment, the mounting base is adapted for attachment to a fishing rod. The cutting tool and mounting base include interconnecting means for removably engaging the tool to the base. The cutting tool includes a tool housing that encloses a blade but defines limited access openings to expose portions of a blade cutting edge. Each opening is defined by a pair of lips projecting beyond the blade cutting edge and being spaced apart less than the length of the exposed edge. The tool housing also defines a receptacle for retaining a sharpening stone in alignment with the blade. The tool housing is shaped along its undersurface to provide a gap between the tool and mounting base. This gap enables the fishing rod and attached mounting base to flex without interference from the tool.

  • Patent number: 4821371
Abstract: A safety handle releasably drives a shaft which is also otherwise powered. The shaft has an axis of rotation and a peripheral engagement band. The safety handle has a frame including a bearing aperture receiving shaft so as to be freely rotatable on and relative to the shaft, a lever arm extending away from the bearing aperture, and pivot means laterally spaced from the aperture. Centering means resiliently bi-directionally biases the drive handle and engagement means towards the centralized position. When the drive handle is grasped and twisted around the handle axis, the engagement means is pivoted to engage the engagement band, enabling torque exerted on the drive handle relative to the shaft axis to turn the shaft, but when the twisting effort is released, the centering means returns the handle and the engagement means to the centralized position, thereby releasing the engagement means from the engagement band and freeing the safety handle for free rotation around and relative to the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4817854
Abstract: Method of bonding a chip to a Cu heat sink comprises depositing a layer of Ni upon the sink, depositing a layer of Pt over the NI, and thereafter annealing the sink in a partial vacuum containing a reducing gas. After the annealing step, a metallic wetting layer of Au and a layer of In are sequentially deposited upon the Pt, and the chip is soldered to the heat sink by means of a flux free soldering process. The pure Pt is very dense and stable, does not have microholes therein which would otherwise allow the Cu ions to penetrate the Pt. For a BeO heat sink, a Ti layer is deposited over the sink rather than Ni, and a layer of Pt is thereafter deposited over the Ti layer. The Ti, Pt and BeO interact to form a good bond of high thermal conductivity, which also blocks ion migration upwardly toward the solder and the electronic chip.

  • Patent number: 4813590
Abstract: To alter the surface qualities of nonreactive materials, such as polypropylene and polyethylene in order to provide a means for bonding the plastic to metal, hard granular materials of oxides or carbides are partially impregnated into the surface of the plastic by application of heat and pressure so that granular edges remain exposed. Thereafter, a silver coating is applied over the impregnated plastic to interlock with the granules. The composite layered plastic then provides a means for soldering or bonding the plastic to a metallic coupling using either a bonding cement or a low temperature solder such as bismuth, lead, or tin based solder. Abrasion-resistant qualities also are improved by impregnating the internal surfaces of a plastic tube in order to improve its wear-resistance during transporting abrasive slurries of sand, coal, and the like.
