Patent number: 4556116Abstract: In a power assisted steering system for a vehicle, an operator controlled steering shaft is connected directly to at least one steered wheel of the vehicle. An electric motor is connected to the steering shaft via a ratio reduction means. A clutch is interposed between the motor and the ratio reduction means to connect and disconnect the motor from the steering shaft. A control circuit senses torque and direction of rotation of the steering shaft by the operator and operates the motor to provide power steering assistance. The control circuit also monitors the operation of the system and, when the system is operating properly, keeps the clutch in engagement to transmit torque from the motor to the steering shaft. When the system is diagnosed to be operating improperly, the clutch is rapidly disengaged and the motor is effectively isolated from the steering shaft.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1984Date of Patent: December 3, 1985Assignee: Eaton CorporationInventor: Walter K. Patent number: 4554901Abstract: In the use of fuel injection pumps, a distributing rotor is often utilized to sequentially deliver fuel from an inlet to a combustion chamber on an engine in combination with one or more reciprocating high pressure pistons. Due to the positioning of the various passages through which the fuel is directed, cavitation of the pump is often experienced which has a very serious effect on the life of the components within the pump. The fluid distribution apparatus of the present invention provides a single delivery passage between the pumping chambers of the reciprocating pistons and the distributing rotor. With this arrangement, fluid that is communicated from the bore to the pumping chambers in response to the intake stroke of the pistons is directed back through the same passage during the pressurization stroke of the pistons. The positioning of the single delivery passage prevents the fuel injection pump.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1984Date of Patent: November 26, 1985Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventors: Dennis H. Patent number: 4552029Abstract: A crank pin is eccentrically located on a motor driven crank plate. The pin engages a radial slot of a two-arm intermediate pivot lever in the manner of a Geneva drive. A bearing socket is located on the arm of the intermediate pivot lever opposite the slot, and is rotatable about an axis parallel to the pivot axis of the lever. The bearing socket axially guides a connecting rod that is perpendicular to a transport lever to be pivoted and is joined with it fixedly in rotation. By the rotation of the crank plate in the one or the other direction, the transport lever is pivoted back and forth. Its two terminal positions are defined by stops. The distance between the axis of the intermediate pivot lever and the bearing socket is dimensioned so that a slight overtravel is obtained and the connecting rod is stressed lightly upon reaching each of the terminal positions, so that the transport lever is held elastically against the stop.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1984Date of Patent: November 12, 1985Assignee: Gretag AktiengesellschaftInventor: Rene Luscher

Patent number: 4550702Abstract: A spill control system for a distributor pump employs an axially positionable valve member to control the passage of diverted fuel through a spill passage. The valve member is axially displaced by an actuator pin mounted to the cam ring which actuates the pump plungers. A cam surface which rotates with the pump rotor engages the actuator pin. The valve member is also angularly positionable for controlling the passage of diverted fuel. The diverted fuel is spilled to the housing interior or in one embodiment may be recouped and redirected to the fuel inlet passage in the rotor. A check valve is employed to prevent the passage of diverted fuel until the injection pressure of the diverted fuel exceeds a pressure in excess of the maximum transfer pressure of the pump.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1984Date of Patent: November 5, 1985Assignee: Stanadyne, Inc.Inventor: Ilija Djordjevic

Patent number: 4549515Abstract: A fuel injection system for internal combustion engines which has a metering valve disposed in a fuel supply line, in which adjusting characteristics for controlling the metering valve are strictly linear, thereby enabling a predictable, flexible fuel metering using simple and inexpensive control circuits. To this end, metering slits in the metering valve, which cooperate with a control piston in a known manner, are each connected to a respective differential pressure valve, which is adjusted such that the pressure differential (p.sub.1,2) before and after the metering slits is constant, regardless of the size of the uncovered cross section of the metering slits. Thus the cross section of the metering slits uncovered at a given time is linearly dependent solely on the displacement travel (h) of the control piston, which in turn is proportional to a control pressure (p.sub.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1984Date of Patent: October 29, 1985Assignee: Robert Bosch GmbHInventor: Wolfgang Maisch
