  • Patent number: 9014636
Abstract: Cognitive interference management in Cellular wireless network with relays and micro/pico/femto cells operated in distributed scheduling mode. A cellular system may use RS to improve capacity or for coverage extension. A RS relays the signals between BS 104 and MS by using wireless links between BS-RS and RS-MS during both downlink and uplink transmissions. Embodiments herein disclose a mechanism to explicitly indicate to the MS whether the MAC management messages sent by the BS to the MS are to inform it to perform scanning for interference measurement. Also, disclosed herein is a mechanism to explicitly indicate to the BS whether the message sent by the MS is related to interference measurement.

  • Patent number: 9002404
Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for migrating from coaxial cable to hybrid cable base station installations with zero or partial down-time are provided. In embodiments, the method includes determining, based on operational measurement data, a sector associated with a base station having the least traffic. Each sector supported by two conduits feeding two coaxial cables to an antenna. A channel count associated with the determined sector is reduced so that all transmits fit on a single coaxial cable resulting in an unused conduit and an unused coaxial cable. A hybrid cable is installed and activated so that all traffic for the determined sector is moved to the hybrid cable. Additional hybrid cables are installed to replace unused coaxial cables until traffic for all sectors has been moved to hybrid cables, which frees half the conduits for other use.

  • Patent number: 8983504
Abstract: Systems for and methods of determining likelihood of relocation of reference points in a positioning system are disclosed. A method of determining a measure of likelihood that an estimated geographic location of a designated wireless device is not its accurate present location includes determining a set of reference points associated with the device, which are a geographic position at which signals from the device were detected and/or other devices having a relationship with the designated device. The existence of the relationship is based on the devices being within signal reception range of a same position within a selected period of time. The method includes retrieving attributes of the reference points and/or of the relationships and determining a measure of likelihood that an estimated geographic location associated with the designated device is not its present location based on the attributes of the reference points of the set and/or of the relationships.

  • Patent number: 8971915
Abstract: Systems for and methods of determining likelihood of mobility of reference points in a positioning system are disclosed. A method of determining a measure of likelihood that a designated wireless device is a mobile device includes determining a set of reference points associated with a designated wireless device. The reference points are a geographic position at which signals from the device were detected and/or another wireless device from which signals were also detected by a receiver within a selected period of time during which the signals from the designated device were detected. The method also includes retrieving statistical information about a temporal distribution of detection of signals of reference points, a spatial distribution of the reference points, and/or a cardinality of the reference points. The method includes determining a measure of likelihood that the designated wireless device is a mobile wireless device based on the statistical information.

  • Patent number: 8958787
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for closing all network connections to a detached user equipment. The local mobility anchor (LMA) receives and reads a control message saying that the user equipment is detached and all the network connections must be closed. The LMA performs the instructions in the control message, i.e. closes all the network connections to the user equipment. After the instructions have been executed, the LMA sends an acknowledgement back to indicate which actions have been performed. Thus, the closing of all network connections is done using only one message exchange and thereby saving signalling in the Core Network.

  • Patent number: 8934926
Abstract: A method includes attempting to receive at a mobile communication terminal paging messages, which are transmitted from a base station. A likelihood that the mobile communication terminal has missed one or more of the paging messages is estimated. In response to finding that the estimated likelihood exceeds a likelihood threshold, an ascertainment is made at the mobile communication terminal whether at least one parameter of operation of the base station has changed by decoding at least part of a downlink message, other than the paging messages, that is transmitted by the base station.

  • Patent number: 8929281
Abstract: Methods and apparatus related to the sharing of wide area network (WAN) uplink bandwidth with peer to peer communication signaling usage are described. Typically, a base station uses its WAN uplink band to receive uplink signals from wireless terminals using the base station as a point of network attachment. In accordance with a feature, a base station injects a signal, e.g., a beacon signal, into its WAN uplink bandwidth, e.g., its WAN frequency division duplex (FDD) uplink band. A peer to peer wireless terminal scans the uplink bandwidth, detects the base station signal, evaluates the received base station signal, and controls peer to peer transmission as a function of the evaluation. Control of peer to peer transmission includes adjusting peer to peer transmission power as a function of the evaluated base station signal. The communications band used for peer to peer communications is, in some embodiments, the same uplink band.

  • Patent number: 8923887
Abstract: Wireless communication systems and methods are described that provide location-based social networks to mobile communication devices. Mobile users of the wireless communication system define social networking profiles storing characteristics of the user. The wireless communication system determines a location of a user's mobile communication device and identifies a set of other mobile users that are geographically proximate to the user. The wireless communication system then filters the set of other mobile users based on characteristics of the social networking profiles of the other mobile users, and transmits identifiers of the filtered set of other mobile users to the user's mobile communication device. The mobile communication device then displays the identifiers of the filtered set of other mobile users to the user allowing the user to initiate contact with any of the other mobile users that are of interest.

  • Patent number: 8914041
Abstract: Methods determine data spots in a network by identifying a transmission resource and its characteristics so as to determine geography of a data spot. Users are then directed to, locate, and/or move to the data spot and retrieve desired content. Users may be directed to the determined data spot, with a map or compass. Transmission resources include ad hoc hotspots for need by sideloading network users in a communicative proximity. Methods may match characteristics of the requesting network user with determined transmission resources to position a data spot. Example methods may be configured based on amounts of network resources consumed, third-party costs to a user, maximizing user experience by providing nearer and faster data spots, and/or any other desired criteria. Different portions of the methods may be performed by the network, the user, and/or third-parties, to reduce network burden while supplying users with desired content through data spots.
