Patent number: 5280842Abstract: This invention relates to two-piece child resistant closures which utilize a ratchet feature to screw on the closure and, more specifically, to a two-piece child resistant closure wherein a particular ratchet configuration and placement of the elements thereof provides negligible reverse torque during undepressed counter-clockwise rotation of the outer closure member. Negligible reverse torque is defined as the torque caused by frictional contact of the outer and inner cap members when the undepressed closure is turned in the removal direction is insufficient to cause the undesired or accidental removal of the closure from the container.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1992Date of Patent: January 25, 1994Assignee: Kerr Group, Inc.Inventor: James Y. Patent number: 5273178Abstract: The invention provides a closable container having an access opening closable by closure doors comprising preferably two hinged doors hingedly mounted on the container on opposed sides of the access opening, and a releasable locking mechanism for the doors. The locking mechanism includes a pair of T-shaped pressure plates hingedly mounted by means of hinge pins on opposed sides of the access opening, to be pivotally displaceable around axes disposed at right angles to the pivotal axes of the hinged doors, to a closed position in which they are positioned over the doors to overlap at least partially with the edges of each door. An engagement block with a handle is provided to hold the pressure plates and the doors in the closed position, the engagement block being rotatably displaceable from a disengaged position to an engaged position in which it engages the pressure plates to exert force on the plates so as to press the edge regions of the doors uniformly against the sides of the access opening.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1993Date of Patent: December 28, 1993Assignee: Eimco Mining Machinery (PTY) LimitedInventor: Roy William Sandham

Patent number: 5248050Abstract: A tamper-evident screw cap for a bottle is disclosed. A guarantee strip on the cap possesses a predetermined breakage point at which the guarantee strip is able to be separated though its entire width. The predetermined breakage point most preferably comprises at least two ribs. Preferably, a window-shaped stress relief aperture is arranged near the predetermined breakage point to improve the expandability of the guarantee strip when the cap is being screwed on for the first time. In this instance, the stress relief aperture prevents the forces caused by the circumferential expansion of the guarantee strip from breaking the predetermined breakage point. When screwing the cap off for the first time, a flow of forces is created in the guarantee strip such that the stress relief openings are no longer effective and the guarantee strip fulfills its function by tearing or otherwise separating to indicate that the cap has been removed.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1992Date of Patent: September 28, 1993Assignee: Crown Cork AGInventors: Herwig Janousch, Michael Kirchgessner, Franz T.
