  • Patent number: 5134777
Abstract: The ram of the reciprocating saw is driven by a scotch yoke mechanism. A planetary gear system consisting of a ring gear and an idler gear imparts an elliptical or linear path of movement to the pin forming part of the scotch yoke mechanism. The ring gear may be adjustably positioned for changing its relationship relative to the idler gear thereby varying the orientation of the elliptical or linear path of movement of the drive pin for varying the stroke of reciprocation of the ram which is connected to the saw blade holder. Actuation of the ring gear to its desired position automatically causes the foot plate of the saw to be located in its desired position for the selected stroke of movement.

  • Patent number: 5131150
Abstract: A flexible saw blade particularly well suited to the cutting of tree limbs, having a predetermined rivet pressure which assures that just the right degree of rivet pressure will act on transversely adjacent cutting links so that pivoting is easy but not too loose; having teeth pointed in predetermined directions to ensure sufficient kerf width to allow the flexible saw blade to pass through the limb as it cuts and prevents uncut wood from forming a ridge between the rows of cutting links, which would otherwise have the effect of impeding the cutting operation; and having a turn-link optionally incorporated which causes the flexible saw blade to automatically right itself with respect to the limb surface upon being passed over the limb and before actual cutting begins.

  • Patent number: 5129160
Abstract: A chain saw feed mechanism includes an arm pivotally mounted to the chain saw and carrying a dog for pivotally engaging the workpiece at the kerf. Thrusting the chain saw along the longitudinal axis of the guide bar moves the guide bar along an arc concentric to the point of workpiece engagement and thereby cuts laterally through the workpiece. Longitudinal thrusting force applied by the operator transfers via the lever arm into lateral feed force needed for cutting the workpiece. The feed mechanism is particularly useful in aggregate cutting applications, where the chain saw is heavy and large cutting forces are needed to pass the saw through the aggregate.

  • Patent number: 5125157
Abstract: A handle of a knife is provided with a recess for receiving an implement, such as a tool or a toothpick. The recess is between the sideplates of the knife and above a locking bar spring. The implement has a hole for accepting a pin carried by a pivotally mounted arm. When the arm is in a first pivotal position, the pin is in engagement with the implement to hold the implement in the handle recess securely. When the arm is rotated, as by pressure exerted by a user's thumb, the arm is rotated and the pin is lifted from engagement with the implement to allow the implement to be withdrawn from the recess in the handle.

  • Patent number: 5123168
Abstract: A practical and safe heavy duty hedge, bush and brush cutter having a forwardly mounted dual-sided tine set that comprises a means for readily cutting flexible heavier limbs. The forwardly mounted tine set preferably is part of a comb-like attachment which includes a number of additional dual-sided tine sets that define a plurality of gathering, holding and cutting areas. The attachment is designed so that it can be mounted from one side of a conventional chain saw blade without removing the chain blade from the chain guide and yet provides stopping surfaces on both sides of the guide bar and chain blade of the saw to support severed limbs and branches in such a manner that bias cutting of flexible limbs and shredding of branches is prevented. The comb-like attachment including the dual-sided tine sets defining the gathering, holding and cutting areas for branches to be cut can be installed and removed from one side of the chain saw blade without the use of special techniques or tools.

  • Patent number: 5121545
Abstract: An electric circular saw of the type including a mechanism for tilting a base relative to the plane of a blade is provided wherein a side knob for being gripped by the user during cutting operation pivotally connects the base and a body of the circular saw through a base attachment portion and a bevel plate having an arcuate guide groove extending through an angular distance corresponding to a tilt angle of the base relative to the blade. The side knob is threaded to the base attachment portion and movable together with the base when the base is tilted. The side knob is spaced from a guide surface of the base by a distance at least larger than a maximum radius of the side knob. The distance between the base and the side knob is constant regardless of the relative angular position of said base and the blade, so that circular saw can be held stably and hence is capable of performing an accurate cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 5121546
Abstract: A can opener comprising a housing having a handle. There is a cutting wheel with a cutting edge for severing a can wall, the cutting wheel defining a cutting wheel axis. There is a traction wheel having a gripping surface to engage a can, the traction wheel defining a traction wheel axis. A pair of spindles rotatably mount the traction wheel and the cutting wheel in the housing such that their axes are substantially perpendicular and the wheels are positioned adjacent and spaced apart from each other to define a gap adapted to accept a can to be opened. One of the wheels is movable toward the other to close the gap thereby engaging and locking the can between the cutting wheel and the traction wheel such that the cutting wheel acts to sever the can wall and the traction wheel acts to move the can past the cutting wheel. In order to close the gap, a fixed thrust surface associated with the housing, and a spaced, adjacent movable thrust surface associated with the movable wheel are provided.

  • Patent number: 5113585
Abstract: A shaving unit comprises at least one blade and a shaving composite that has a surface for engaging the user's skin adjacent the blade edge. The shaving unit may be of a disposable cartridge type adapted for coupling to and uncoupling from a razor handle or may be integral with a handle so that the complete razor is discarded as a unit when the blade or blades become dulled. The blade edge (or edges) cooperate with skin engaging surfaces to define shaving geometry. The shaving aid composite is a mixture of water insoluble matrix material, an effective amount of shaving aid material, and a water soluble low molecular weight release enhancing agent that enhances the releasability of the shaving aid material from the matrix material.

  • Patent number: 5111581
Abstract: A locking, folding knife or tool comprising a handle with a groove dimensioned to receive a knife blade or other instrument that pivots about an integral pivot post between a closed position in the groove and an extended position. The pivot post fits into a hole in the blade of the knife which has two cutout portions along the periphery of the hole. The pivot post has an additional cutout portion. The handle carries a bolt for pushing a spring biased transfer bar toward the blade thereby disengaging a locking pin from one of the cutout portions of the blade and engaging the cutout portion of the pivot post so that the blade can pivot freely about the pivot post. The first cutout portion locks the blade in the extended position; the second cutout portion retains but does not lock the blade in the closed position. Additionally, a strut pivoting between the transfer bar and the handle can be included for added security in the locking of the blade.

  • Patent number: 5105543
Abstract: A power operated portable cutting tool for rescue work. A cutting head comprises first and second jaw members, each jaw member having a cutting edge portion adjacent one end and a shank portion adjacent the other end. The jaw members are pivotally attached together about an axis of pivot generally intermediate their ends so that the cutting edge portions are generally opposing, and so that pivoting the shank portions apart pivots the cutting edge portions of the jaw members closed. A hydraulic cylinder and piston are mounted between the shank portions of the jaw members along an axis generally transverse to the axis of pivot of the jaw members. A handle connects the tool to a hydraulic fluid supply line and to a hydraulic fluid return line. Hydraulic fluid is selectively applied to the cylinder to extend the piston and close the jaw members. The jaw members are spring biased to retract the piston and open the jaw members.
