Patent number: 4637091Abstract: A wiper arm assembly and system utilizing same is disclosed wherein a wiper arm of the assembly is alternately coupled to a wiper arm driver in first and second angular positions angularly spaced about a pivot axis to permit movement of the assembly to a park position and automatic movement between first and second limit positions of a glass wipe pattern. A manually operable coupling mechanism permits the movement and automatically locks the wiper arm to the wiper arm driver in the first angular position during movement towards the first limit position immediately after movement from the park position towards the second limit position. The coupling mechanism includes a locking member and a cam having first and second communicating grooves in which the locking member is alternately positioned. The cam is mounted on the wiper arm driver to rotate about the pivot axis.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1985Date of Patent: January 20, 1987Assignee: American Motors CorporationInventor: Leonard L. Wu

Patent number: 4633542Abstract: Tufts of bristles (3) in a brush are resiliently retractable by thrusting against a membrane (5) which is capable of resilient spot deformation, with each tuft being retractable independently from the other tufts of the brush. Tufts are retracted into the brush in order to continuously match the envelope surface (18) defined by the free ends (15) of said tufts (3) to the shape of the surface to be brushed (17), and said matching takes place without substantial difference in the force applied to the various zones of said surface by the various tufts of bristles.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1985Date of Patent: January 6, 1987Assignee: Laboratoires PharmascienceInventor: Bernard Taravel

Patent number: 4630535Abstract: A method and apparatus for more effectively squeezing moisture from wood chips and/or other "green" biomass materials. A press comprising a generally closed chamber having a laterally movable base at the lower end thereof, and a piston or ram conforming in shape to the cross-section of the chamber is adapted to periodically receive a charge of biomass material to be dehydrated. The ram is forced against the biomass material with suffcient force to compress the biomass and to crush the matrix in which moisture is contained within the material with the face of the ram being configured to cause a preferential flow of moisture from the center of the mass outwardly to the grooved walls of the chamber. Thus, the moisture is effectively squeezed from the biomass and flows through the grooves formed in the walls of the chamber to a collecting receptacle and is not drawn back into the mass by capillary action when the force is removed from the ram.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1984Date of Patent: December 23, 1986Assignee: Regents of the University of MinnesotaInventor: John G. Patent number: 4625359Abstract: A windshield wiper unit with a wiper arm of telescopic construction which has a housing driven to and fro round an axis of rotation by a driving motor and a slide movable in relation to the housing, this slide being displaceable by a crank assembly is so designed that the various bearings are subjected to little load and so that compact construction is possible. This is achieved by having the connecting rod belonging to the crank assembly above or below the slide and linked to the slide between the two bearings for it and by having the distance between the two bearings at least as great as the stroke of the slide.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1984Date of Patent: December 2, 1986Assignees: SWF-Spezialfabrik fur Autozubehor Gustav Rau GmbH, Daimler-Benz AktiengesellschaftInventors: Bruno Egner-Walter, Eckhardt Schmid, Wolfgang Scholl, Anton Epple, Hans Trube, Martin Pfeiffer, Josef Berger, Egon Frey

Patent number: 4625637Abstract: The roll assembly of a calender has at least one roll with a deformable shell which surrounds a rigid carrier and whose end portions surround discrete antifriction bearings. The intermediate portion of the shell surrounds one or more rows of hydrostatic supporting elements which can be acted upon by adjustable fluid-operated motors to change the shape of the intermediate portion in a plane including the axes of the one roll and the neighboring roll as well as at right angles to such plane. Stresses which are applied to the bearings for the end portions of the shell are monitored by several sensors which transmit signals to a control system to regulate the deformation of the shell in such a way that the stresses upon the bearings are minimized or reduced to zero. This enables the intermediate portion of the shell to undergo deformation which is best suited for optimum treatment of the material passing through the nip of the one roll and the neighboring roll.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1985Date of Patent: December 2, 1986Assignee: Kleimwefers GmbHInventors: Josef Pav, Reinhard Wenzel, Rainer Schmidt, Peter Svenka, Richard Rauf

Patent number: 4625357Abstract: The handle of the toothbrush has a bifurcated forward end. The spaced free outer ends of the bifurcations are interconnected by a transversely extending arched head defining opposite lower side walls and an upper middle wall therebetween. Tufts of bristles project inwardly from the inner wall of the head. The tufts project from the opposite side walls at an angle to the horizontal center line of the head and the tufts projecting from the middle wall point toward the center point of the head.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1985Date of Patent: December 2, 1986Inventor: John D. Patent number: 4622712Abstract: A wiper blade rubber of a constant cross section, composed of at least two kinds of rubber ingredient and manufactured by multi-color extrusion molding. In a wiper blade rubber according to this invention, a lip portion thereof to be in sliding contact with the glass surface is formed of a lubricating rubber and a swing portion generally of a trigonal cross section is mostly formed of a flexible rubber. In another wiper blade rubber according to this invention, a central part at the bottom end of the lip portion is formed of a high frictional rubber and both side parts of the bottom end of the lip portion is formed of a lubricating rubber. In a further wiper blade rubber according to this invention, an engaging part of the base portion, in the form of grooves or ridges, for engagement with an elongate rigid body held by a yoke of a wiper, is formed of a lubricating rubber and the swing portion is mostly formed of a flexible rubber.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1984Date of Patent: November 18, 1986Assignee: Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hiroshi Sugita, Takemasa Yasukawa, Masanori Aritake

Patent number: 4622894Abstract: In a belt press of the type used to dewater heavy slurries, an improved belt drive system is provided. The upper belt is driven by at least two rollers, one of which is situated in the dewatering section wherein the upper and lower belts are squeezed and traveling together. The improved drive arrangement provides a more uniformly increasing tension in the belt as it passes through the dewatering section than in such presses heretofore. Further because the lower belt is at least partially driven by its frictional engagement with the upper belt, through the sandwiched slurry, the synchronization of the belt speeds is improved. Further improved control of the belt press performance is provided by means for sensing the speeds of the belts and responsive means for regulating the belt tensioning systems accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1984Date of Patent: November 18, 1986Assignee: Rexnord Inc.Inventors: Robert E. Crandall, Kenneth F. Kosulic, Thomas C. Rooney, Larry C. Smith
