Abstract: Mechanisms and techniques provide a method for routing a packet that includes a content request and an Internet Protocol address and port number that identify a source transmitting the packet. The method relates to selecting a routing policy to forward the packet, based upon at least a portion of content request. The method includes a data communications device receiving a packet having a content request and an Internet Protocol address and port number that identify a source transmitting the packet. The device performs a network address translation, based upon at least a portion of the content request, to translate the Internet Protocol address and port number of the packet to a respective communications device Internet Protocol address and communications device port number. The device then selects a routing policy based upon the communications device Internet Protocol address and routes the packet to a destination according to the routing policy.

  • Patent number: 7307997
Abstract: A technique for detecting SPAM calls in VoIP networks and taking responsive actions to such calls is described. Detection is based on recognizing abnormalities in signaling message statistics. For example, a device that persistently sends many more call setup requests then it receives and at the same time constantly receives too many, or too few, call terminations in a statistically determined period of time is assumed to be a spam source. This criteria is based on the principle that a Spammer originates many calls, which are consistently terminated by the Spammer or by the recipient. Responsive actions to the detection of VoIP spam may include displaying a call text warning to the recipient, using special ring tone, automated voice mail answer, rejecting the call, etc. The invention addresses an issue that will become more problematic for VoIP networks and their subscribers in the future, and to which a solution has not been proposed in the prior art.

  • Patent number: 7295576
Abstract: A transport packet parser (42) includes a transport packet header decoder (50) for identifying a packet identifier (PID) and continuity counter (CC) associated with a current packet. The PID along with an enable (En) bit is input to an PID associative memory (52) in search mode to identify an address associated with the PID. The address is used to access a CC associated with a previous packet for the same PID in a random access memory (62). The previous continuity counter is used along with other header information to determine whether the current packet satisfies predetermined criteria. If so, the packet is passed to a transport packet buffer for further processing.

  • Patent number: 7272115
Abstract: A network device for enforcing service level agreements is described that is able to scan the contents of entire data packets including header and payload information. The network device includes memory for storing subscriber information, policies and statistics. The traffic flow scanning processor scans the header and payload information from each data packet, which is used to associate each data packet with a particular subscriber, classify the type of network traffic in the data packet and to enforce the particular policies associated with the subscriber. The traffic flow scanning processor produces a treatment for the data packet based on the scanning. The scanned data packets and the associated treatments are then passed to a quality of service processor, which modifies the data packets if necessary and enforces resource allocation according to the preprogrammed policies.

  • Patent number: 7269126
Abstract: A method for constructing orthogonal codes of length N for use in a network utilizing quasi-synchronous code division multiple access combined with time division duplexing. The method determines the balanced vectors of length N, being all possible cross-correlation vectors resulting from zero cross-correlation of codes of length N. An arbitrary code of length N is utilized, and a bitwise XOR-ing is performed with all the balanced vectors to produce a set of codes with which the arbitrary code is orthogonal. A bitwise XOR-ing of the original balanced vectors is performed and the code is added to a set of orthogonal codes if the result of the bitwise XOR-ing of the original balanced vectors is balanced. The method is repeated until the set of orthogonal codes is complete.

  • Patent number: 7260098
Abstract: Data is distributed over multiple connections through a network in successive groups of containers such that respective containers of each group are transmitted via respective ones of the connections. Each container contains an identifier of the group to which the container belongs. The output of the network data from containers that have been received is buffered to compensate differences in the delays of transport via different connections. An oldest identifier value received via the connections during a time frame is detected by determining a plurality of respective minimum values of the identifiers received in the time frame. Each minimum value is determined among received identifiers from a respective sub-range of possible identifier values. A “sequentially first” sub-range of successive sub-ranges, for which at least one of the minimum values has been determined, is then determined. The minimum value of the “sequentially first” sub-range is then selected as the oldest identifier.

  • Patent number: 7257102
Abstract: Carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation from preamble symbols. Any communication receiver may be adapted to perform the CFO estimation. The CFO estimation is performed using a low complexity, high accuracy CFO estimation method. The operation may be described as follows: each element of a received sequence is divided by the corresponding preamble element, the resulting sequence is divided into N subgroups, and each subgroup is then averaged. The phase differential of the resulting sequence is computed, averaged, and used to compute an estimate of the carrier frequency offset. This approach to performing CFO estimation is of relatively high estimation accuracy and of relatively low computational complexity.

  • Patent number: 7248598
Abstract: The invention concerns the transmission of data packets in multicast mode, in which method the packets are sent from a sending end of a physical transmission medium and received by terminals at a receiving end of said medium. It finds a typical application in networks whose terminals cannot listen to each other, which is the case in satellite networks, for example, whereas management implies sending a query message to the terminals in order to determine the presence of an active group of terminals as a function of the reception of a response message from a terminal of said group. A signal is then sent to the terminals from the sending end, preferably the returned response, to indicate reception of a response message from a terminal of the group of terminals, so that terminals that have not sent a response message can act accordingly, in particular by interrupting their own process for sending a response.

  • Patent number: 7233582
Abstract: The total amount of power for communications transmitted over channels susceptible to quality fluctuation is decreased to reduce interference with other communications and increase the system's overall capacity. When channel-encoded data is to be transmitted, the quality of a transmission channel is judged. The data is transmitted when the judged quality is higher than predefined. However, if the quality is lower than predefined, the data transmission to a wireless section is suppressed to avoid a signal transmission that cannot effectively be used at a receiving station, decrease the average transmission power, and reduce interference with other communications. Even if the channel quality is lower than predefined at the time of assigning a code word created by channel encoding, the same code word assignment operation as for a transmission portion is performed with respect to a no-transmission portion that a transmitting station does not send to a wireless section.

  • Patent number: 7230955
Abstract: The present invention is a system and method for packetizing actual noise signals, typically background noise, received by an access gateway from a speaking party and transmitting these packetized noise signals via a network to an egress gateway. The egress gateway converts the packetized noise signal into noise signals suitable for output and transmits the output noise signals to a listening party. When the access gateway detects that no voice signal is being received and only a noise signal is being received for a predetermined period of time, the access gateway instructs the egress network to continually transmit output noise signals to the listening party and ceases to transmit packetized noise signals to the egress gateway.
