  • Patent number: 7221657
Abstract: The capacity and coverage of a packet-based conversational service in a mobile communications system is increased by efficiently provisioning resources for packets that have different length headers transported over the radio interface during the period over which the service is provided. A radio bearer or connection is established between a mobile radio and a radio network to support a packet-based conversational service. The radio bearer or connection is normally configured with radio resources to deliver a particular quality of service assuming that the packet headers will be highly compressed. The length of packets to be transmitted via the radio bearer is checked. Those packets which are longer because of less header compression are detected. Processing is performed to minimize or reduce that impact on system capacity or coverage when the detected packets are transmitted over the radio bearer or connection.

  • Patent number: 7215656
Abstract: The present invention is related to a method and an apparatus for the orthogonal complex-domain spreading modulation in CDMA spread spectrum communication system when there are channels with statistically higher transmitting power. In CDMA spread spectrum communication systems with a transmitter and a receiver, the transmitter according to the invention has several channels with different information. Two channels with higher power than the others, which are spread in the conventional scheme, are spread with the orthogonal codes using a complex-domain multiplier. The spread signals are added. Then the signals are scrambled using a complex-domain multiplier with secondary scrambling sequences generated by a special scrambling code generator with primary scrambling sequences as inputs. The receiver does reverse operation of the transmitter.

  • Patent number: 7209469
Abstract: A process is provided for determining the distance between two devices by sending ranging packets between them. The local device sends a first ranging packet, which the remote device sends holds for a first hold time before sending a second ranging packet in return. The local device also sends a third ranging packet, which the remote device sends holds for a second hold time before sending a fourth ranging packet in return. If the second hold time is twice the first hold time, then the propagation time for signals between the two devices can be determined solely by time measurements made by the local device. For received signals, these time measurements can be adjusted to provide accurate time estimates for a direct line of sight signal, which corresponds to a shortest transmission distance between the two devices. The propagation time can then be used to determine distance between the devices.

  • Patent number: 7203174
Abstract: An Ethernet communication system device that switches between SGMII and GBIC modes of operation, without software intervention. For example, a physical layer device (“PHY”) for an Ethernet communication system that switches between SGMII and GBIC modes of operation, without software intervention, to match a link device mode of operation. The link device can be a Media Access Controller (“MAC”), a switch, an optical device, or the like. The PHY is coupled between the link device and a copper link media. The PHY can operate with a link device that has similar SGMII/GBIC switching capabilities. The PHY determines whether the link device is operating in SGMII or GBIC mode of operation. The link device mode of operation is then compared with a current PHY mode of operation. When the PHY mode of operation matches the link device mode of operation, the PHY continues to operate in the current PHY mode.

  • Patent number: 7203196
Abstract: The invention provides a data discard signalling procedure in a wireless communication system. If data is discarded by the transmitter, the transmitter needs to notify the receiver of the discard. A shortened move receiving window super-field is used to request the receiver to move its reception window and optionally to indicate the set of discarded RLC SDUs, as a result of an RLC SDU discard in the sender. A move receiving window acknowledgement super-field acknowledges the reception of a MRW SUFI. If various criteria are met, the SDU discard with explicit signalling procedure can be efficiently terminated resulting in increased transmission throughput. Utilizing the data discard signalling procedure of the present invention, transmission throughput is increased and the transmission performance is improved.

  • Patent number: 7193992
Abstract: Method and system for managing radio resources to support voice and data traffic. The method uses adaptive resource partitioning between voice and data as the basis for improving call access control. A cost function is used to determine partitioning based on an operator's desired call blocking rates for both incoming voice and data traffic. Other examples of the cost function can be constructed using other quality of service measures for the carried services. In the dynamic burst allocation area, three methods are provided that make use of adaptive burst allocation, scheduled bursts and power borrowing between users as enhancements to the conventional methods used for integrated wide-band CDMA networks. The methods disclosed may be used in isolation as an enhancement to the current CDMA networks, or in combination to provide a combined improvement in network performance. The first scheme for adaptive burst allocation equalizes the rate of information transmitted by different data users.

  • Patent number: 7180907
Abstract: To transmit an anisochronic data stream on an isochronic transmission route with a plurality of channels over a transmission network, a number of channels is reserved by the transmitter before beginning the transmission, wherein the sum of the transmission capacities of the reserved channels just exceeds the bandwidth of the asynchronous data stream. During the course of transmission, the data of the anisochronic data stream are formed into packets; each packet is transmitted over the reserved channels. After a packet has been sent, unused portions of the reserved channels are filled with filler data that is discarded at the receiver, until sufficient data are again available at the transmitter to begin transmission of the next packet.

  • Patent number: 7170889
Abstract: A system and method for the efficient use of satellite radio modems and satellite bandwidth is disclosed. In the system and method, a satellite radio modem is used for PRACH requests, each PRACH request occupying 31.25 kHz in a packet data transfer channel. The packet data transfer channels can be either 125.0 kHz or 156.25 kHz. Therefore, four PRACH requests can be transmitted in any one packet data transfer channel. The packet data transfer channels are broken into eight time slots, and one time slot in each channel (either the odd frame or even frame) is dedicated to a PRACH request. A satellite radio modem for PDCH transfers is dedicated for each channel. The satellite radio modem assigned to receive the four PRACH requests is timeshared over 16 channels, thereby reducing the amount of satellite radio modems that would otherwise have been needed, had the PRACH request transmissions utilized a dedicated modem for each PRACH request, for each channel.
